has been switched from Zoloft to 10mg of Prozac once each day

about ten days ago. His SIB and tantrums have decreased greatly in

school and at home. His Xanax has been discontinued since it apparently

was causing his crying, tantrums and increase of SIB nearly every day

that he was on it. was on Prozac about three years ago and it

greatly helped then with his disposition and behaviors, but he was on

the liquid Prozac due to his feeding tube which caused terrible

diarrhea. Now he is on the capsule which I split in two and mix with

water. If this continues with positive behaviors and less SIB then I

will probably not mess with his meds too much any more. May just add

the Klonopin daily if he gets sick and his behaviors start to worsen

due to him not feeling well.

Hi - I feel my son needs an SSRi too. Can someone tell me what a SIB

is please?

Thanks,

Pat,

Yes, I agree. My son's doc is reluctant to put him on SSRis in case his vilent behaviour escalates. I am willing to take the chance however because he has no quality of life - not even any obsessions anymore really, except for Looney Tunes. He can no longer dress himself because he fears touching the clothes and we can't really go out anywhere because he is so obsessive even going into a shop is a minefield and he can never decided how to do the simplest things. This would not be such a problem if he were not aggressive when he becomes anxious. He is now too big for me to restrain. But I feel an SSRi should be tried for a month to perhaps lessen his anxiety and phobias. I am now getting a second opinion privately because I am unhappy with current docs.

Isn't it amazing how these kids differ? Prozac increased Karac's OCD and SIB while the Zanax has made him a lamb! It is just trial and error. Pat K __________ NOD32 1.1454 (20060321) Information __________This message was checked by NOD32 antivirus system.http://www.nod32.com

Yes Pat,

I switched from Klonopin to Xanax after reading how better and more cooperative you had said that Karac was. Since 's SIB and other behaviors took a turn for the worse, I decided that I had nothing to lose to suggest to his neurologist to change him to Xanax but from my pervious post, you see how it just worsened him. Maybe some day in my lifetime, the medical community will discover a medication that is effective across the board for children and adults on all levels of the autism spectrum.

I have found the natural sup[plement 5Htp works better, with no side effects. My daughter was on Prozac for a few months at age 8, when she said she didn't like it anymore because it made her feel like she was mad at me. I did some research and found that 5Htp has the same effect on Seratonin that Prozac does, but no harmful side effects. I have also given it to my autistic son to help calm him. Lindy

Hi:

Could you let me know where I can find 5Htp, please?.

My son is autistic, pervasive developmental disorder, and some of his behaviors are the obssesions with the DVDs, VCRS, and CDs., rewind and rewind, watch the same logos, every hour he wants to turn off his TV and go for movie logos. In the School, he likes to turn on and off the Computers, and is doing the same thing with the electronics in the School. His behaviors does not let him go ahead in the School. I took him to the Developmental Dr. and he starts Zoloft in 0.25 mgs. during 01 month. On October 04, the Dr. increase the dosis to 0.50 mgs. and until today, almost 02 weeks, I did not see any progress. I would like also to listen some advise from the Group, if it is possible,

Thanks you so much!

Carmen
