Hi,

I know Gilly Baird as she assessed and diagnosed Charlie.

She also STRONGLY recommended that we take Charlie to a specific ASD nursery which involved a move from Kent to Surrey ( her words were "run, don't walk, and get him in there") . That nursery is very definately NOT ABA and I would personally describe them as being anti.

I am really surprised to hear her being described as pro-ABA. Don't get me wrong I thought the nursery was fantastic and I am grateful to Gilly Baird for her advice( - plus I have no real views on ABA either way) but on that basis and on the basis of the conversations I had with her I am surprised to hear her described as an ABA supporter. Personally I liked her very much - straight talking and interesting - wish I could get to the talk which is being held just around the corner from my house but can't !!!!!!

I'd love to know why her views on ABA have changed so much and what she thinks about bio-med too

Would love to hear some feedback when you have been.

Regards

Deborah

Gilly Baird is one of the big experts- she's very into ABA, have no

idea on her views regarding biomedical stuff, but if you are going for

funding for ABA then she'll be on your side I suspect and very helpful.

Who is your local paed- I know you've told me but I can't remember.? I

don't think there is anyone locally who is particularly good, although

Dr (a female registrar in Dr Cronin's team) is very interested

in autism and biomedical interventions. She's much better than Cronin

himself.

Cronin- but haven't seen him for 4 years! (Which is fine by me- Dr

She diagnosed my friend's son - about 8 years ago now, and recommended

that they start an ABA program immediately (which they did). I don't

have any personal experience of her, but my friend always says it was

her who get them into ABA. Long time ago though, maybe there was less

provision available then.

Hi Sara

I liked Gillian Baird. She did an excellent formal diagnosis on my

son as well, but we had to pay. As far as I recall, she seemed like

someone who had an open mind, but I'm not sure how open she is to

biomed as we didn't discuss it at all. She recommended the same ASD

specific nursery for my son as was recommended to Deborah (the little

group in Epsom, Surrey).

The other thing I know about Gillian Baird is that she was involved

with the development of the CHAT for early diagnosis.

Dr Baird is giving a talk at St Saviours church, Guildford tomorrow

evening for the NAS (Surrey branch) at 8pm.

Hope some of that is helpful,

Sharon
