Guest guest
I know that cruciferous vegetables like kale and cabbage contain goiterens (sp?) that are as effective as medications at reducing thyroid hormone levels. Peolple with hypothyroid are supposed to avoid them. I don't know about how to feed this to your cat, but juicing kale and putting it in his food might work. I know drinking kale juice really screwed me up because I have a hypothyroid problem. > Folks, > > What's good simple nutritional support for hyperthyroid -- that a dying > cat might eat? Guest guest
That's odd. LAst year, or whenever it was I still had chronic fatigue, it can almost be assumed I had a hypoactive thyroid, as my temperature was an average 97.5. My daily juice then was carrots, celery & apples. A friend asked if she could add kale one day, and I was so invigorated by its addition that I made it part of my daily recipe, and my mother and I have been eating it frequently as boiled greens & pot liquor, to go with her cornbread, ever since. I feel it was an important ingredient in my recovery. While I don't always have abundant energy, I am no longer paralysed with fatigue and my temperature is normal again. jim hyperbaroman@... wrote: > > I know that cruciferous vegetables like kale and cabbage contain > goiterens (sp?) that are as effective as medications at reducing > thyroid hormone levels. Guest guest
Dark green vegetables have a lot of good things in them, especially kale. Maybe the good outweighed the bad. Or maybe your low temp was due to something other than hypothyroid. hyperbaroman >From: Jim Lambert <jlambert@...> >Reply-oxyplus >oxyplus >Subject: Re: Re: HYPERthyroidsim >Date: Sun, 01 Jul 2001 07:55:08 -0400 > >That's odd. Yes, I believe that's true : Don't heat the kale juice, or any of the other goitrogenic foods, if you are trying to suppress an overactive thyroid. However, if you are *hypothyroid*, you'd better cook those specific foods (listed earlier), if you eat very much of them. Bill ..

Guest guest
dorothy, West & south Texas are more the West, and east Texas is a lot more like the South, especially in eating habits. We are from east Texas, so my mom has been cooking greens & other Southern food all her life. She has advanced macular degeneration, and went to a doctor in Arkansas that treats it using acupuncture & nutrition. While there she met another woman with macular degeneration who ate boiled kale every day, saying it was the best thing she had found so far for her eyes. We do not know her source for that tidbit. We have always eaten kale, but not that often. After this experience, my mom ate kale regularly. My kale juicing began when I had chronic fatigue. When a friend added kale I felt a boost in energy 20 minutes after eating it, so it became a regular for me. I had a similar reaction to celery, which seemed to affect mental clarity more than energy. Mom is always telling me you barely have to cook spinach greens, and NEVER overcook them! When I asked her how long she cooks kale, she laughed and said, " all day and all night. " Kale is tough and takes longer to cook than any other green she knows of. Basically, just cook it until it is tender. I marvel every time I eat boiled kale and drink the pot liquor how something so bitter could be delicious! In the middle of a meal of it my body just can't get enough. I eat it til I get stuffed, then drink the liquor or soak it up with hush puppies if I'm lucky & there are some. My point is that any healthy food my body craves that much has to have some heavy mojo going for it nutritionally, so I cannot recommend kale enough! But, after the posts of the last 2 days, I would experiment to see how the raw juice affected my energy levels if I thought I might be hypothyroid. jim dbates3809@... wrote: > > In a message dated 7/1/01 4:57:55 PM, jlambert@... writes: > > << I > have been eating it frequently as boiled greens & pot liquor, >> > > Can you tell me how long she boils the greens and what, if any seasoning > she uses? Guest guest
Hi Jim, You think kale is bitter? I put peppered vinegar on it just to give it some taste. If you're from the South you must surely have eaten mustard greens. I'm from Louisiana originally and I'd give a lot for a big pot of mustard greens with cornbread and freshly shelled black-eyed peas or butter beans. I never even ate kale till I moved to land. And spinach was something that came in a can. My family grew mustard greens and turnip greens and we had them constantly. Maybe that's what my ailing, Homozon-depleted system needs--a return to my roots. My mouth is watering just thinking about it. (btw, I've juiced kale, but juicing mustard greens? no thanks). Guest guest
Sara, " Pot liquor " is just the juice from cooking greens. As most of us know now when veggies are boiled most of the good is in the water. My point was that your body seems to know that, and craves the pot liquor. Ask any Southerner who grew up on greens. Almost every one of them will rave about the pot liquor. I have seen people fight over it. ;-) jim schapin333 wrote: > > Jim, Please say more about the " pot liquor " . Guest guest
Pot liquor reminds me of Edgar Cayces' " beef juice " You put 2 pounds of lean beef, cut in cubes, into a double boiler (the dry bowl) and boil until the meat is " deflated " and most of what remains is juice. Throw away the meat. This is said to be very nourishing for elderly and invalids. Give only a small amount, like 2 tbsp every couple hours
