Ian Jordan mentioned this in the AiA conference in Birmingham several years ago during his presentation on Irlen lenses.

Have a look at this website http://www.irlen.com/autism_main.htm

My dd is driven mad by fluorescent lighting, and also my Mum, who has CFS, can't abide them either.

OT: lighting in school

HiHave been in Sams school today again observing classes, particularly autistic kids with another parent as we think they may need some sort of base or something for older kids. One of the things we noticed was the lighting and some of the children holding their arms over their heads (sensory overload). Not sure if the lighting was bothering them but wondered if anyone knew of any research that was around re lighting and sensory overload/epilepsy/autism etc?thanks Di x

Hi my son had exactly the same problem – not only with the

flickering – he wore a sun visor to stop it interfering with his vision (a tip

from donna ), but also the buzzing drove him mad  - donna williams has written articles on it somewhere

and certainly mentions it in her books – if they are old fluorescent lighting tubes

without a cover they are the worst – newer ones have diffusers on them and use

a different form of lighting – from what you observed and based on my sons

experience I would say it  is driving

them demented.
