Guest guest
Gretchen473: When I was your son's age, my parents were told that I had an " unusual gait " and I was not diagnosed with CMT until I was 52 years old. When I was that young I did not have the high arch and other foot abnormalities that I have now. In fact, I was completely flat footed. But I walked on the outside of my feet. Another thing to look for is your son's gait when he runs. Since the muscles are not particularly efficient with CMT, the movement of the legs while running can look very strange (at least mine did). The " typical " blood tests would not disclose CMT - the required genetic blood tests are expensive and only done by one or two labs to my knowledge. I think you made a good call in getting a new doctor when the current one saw nothing urgent. Ken
Guest guest
At age 69 I was finally diagnosed as having something wrong - and it was a diagnosis of CMT. But.......my gait when running was very " different from others " when I was just a kid - I remember all the kids in gym class laughing when I ran around the track of the football field. I remember feeling badly because I could not run any other way and I didn't think I was running differently. Also.......I wore out my shoes on the inside of the foot. It took all these long years for the symptoms to get bad enough for me to seek help, finally admitting to myself something was wrong and seeing myself turn into a clone of my dad as far as walking and balance went. He was never diagnosed and died at age 82 in 1982, but I feel sure that had they looked for CMT they would have found it. June
