Guest guest
Hi all, I live in Dubai. Since Nov my last year my daughter (now 2.5 yo) received ABA therapy from a recognised provider. It has helped my daughter quite a lot but I also believe in biomedical intervention. When they found out that I will be going to US for a biomedical consultation, they said that they can't accept me as a client anymore!! I am also banned from all their branches in other countries! Despite they don't have a written policy on this, they tried what ever they can to knock me down. I was so angry and feel invaded! Aren't they so selfish and don't care about ethics or respect to a parent who is the most effected by autism? I read about CARD (The Centre of Autism and Related Disorder) who provides ABA service and located in London UK. Does anyone in this group know about them or even use their service ? Thanks for taking time to read my story. Tetty
Guest guest
This is disgraceful. Can you name them Tetty. What were their reasons. Can't think of any valid ones. Anyway, with so many parents doing bio-medical intervention they'll soon have no customers. Gillian On 7/5/06 07:56, " t_heradini " <t_heradini@...> wrote: > Hi all, > > I live in Dubai. Guest guest
Is there any way you can let us know who these people are? My God, the pomposity and arrogance! I have encountered a severely negative attitude from my own ABA providers who have even gone as far to denegrate other parents in front of me, who use biomed intervention. I think this is truly a reflection of ABA(ists) moreso, the Lovaas script types who are losing ground in terms of clients. I notice that the biomed boards here on are often full but the ABA boards seem more quiet. Nothing against ABA per se, we use it for our own child. But your story is testament to just how " scared " some of them seem. I really do think they are waking up and realising that ABA is not the be all end all and that humans are more than mammals that are governed by " behavior " only. Where will ABA be, particularly the Lovaas stuff, in 20 years? I doubt very much it will be seen as a viable teaching method. These people you unfortunately encountered seem particularly unscrupulous, however, and I have to say you are well rid of them. Who do they think they are? Can we have a discussion surrounding this? This is not good news and seems to be echoed quite frequently by other parents' experiences, including my own. ABAers dont seem to like being questioned too much, i wonder why? I can't help you with finding a new provider but there are other ABA based in the UK which might be able to help. ABA-UK springs to mind. I think they would be VERY interested in hearing your story. For ABAers to accept that biomed intervention has a very important place in the lives of our autistic children, means they also have to accept that our kids are physically sick. Then, that begs the question " what made them sick in the first place? " Shame on them. > > Hi all, > > I live in Dubai. Guest guest
Hi Tetty We don't use CARD although I know someone who does. Their opinion is that it depends on the supervisor and that the additional costs of e mails, reports and tel calls can be quite high. Our own provider, UKYAP works with kids in Romania, Italy, Qatar and Australia and are a UCLA replica site. They have no problem with biomeds. I find your provider's stance really bizarre as the majority of the biomed we undertake is vitamin supplementation which you might well do with any kid- NT, ASD or whatever. Even chelation is a natural process - particularly McBride's version which advocates juicing - so would they draw the line at carrot juice? Contact me off list if you would like more details of our provider. Rhona > Hi all, > > I live in Dubai. Guest guest
Hi Tetty, We have been using CARD UK until very recently. It is run by one woman who is very good and they promote biomedical interventions. However we swapped because we wanted to give VB a try and I have to say that it is LOADS better than Lovaas ABA. I would never go back to the old style ABA so perhaps you could use your provider's poor attitude to your advantage and seize the opportunity to start VB instead of ABA. Guest guest
Thanks to all of your responses, make me feel much better! They are based in Perth, Australia (I have to ask Mandi if OK to mention their name here..) They have a website but of course it is all about the service of trying to help parents. Their reason? They believe only ABA can help my child and parents who are committed to ABA should not seek other therapy or treatment. Biomed is harmful to the ABA program. (too bad I didn't record the conversation..) They kept saying it is my decision but at the same time if I pursue with biomed intervention, they will not take me. For me it is threatening. It is so ridiculous that they can only give me 10 hrs therapy per week due to shortage of therapist but want me to just stick with them ! My child has a high metal content in her body from vaccination and there is no way ABA can help her to have a good health! Sorry to make it such a long note.. Tetty > > Hi all, > > I live in Dubai. Guest guest
I think I could name who these people are! The insults I have taken from behavioural consultants therapists on this subject in the 10 months I have been doing it (including one who said " we were too much into biomed for to benefit from ABA " when we were breaking ourselves as a family to meet costs) you would not believe. I know a family who were banned from even doing GF/CF if they were to work with these people. How dare they! Eileen and > > > Hi all, > > > > I live in Dubai. Guest guest
As an ABA tutor I have to say reports such as these don't suprise me. I have heard supervisors I have worked with in the past completely write of biomedical interventions without an inch of knowledge of what they were talking about. Thankfully, I think these sorts of providers are few and far between, but I sometimes wonder how much providers are looking to make money, compared to how much they really want to help children. I can't think of anything that makes me more angry in this world than the injustices parents of children with autism face accross the board, and it is this injustice that drives me. Unfortunately I don't think this is the case for everybody working within the field of ABA. If it were they would support any intervention that may help a child, and they would understand that some children need medical help before they can apply themselves to an education programme. I haven't read a great deal about bio med I admit. But I trust that parents generally want the best for their children and would never place their child at uneccessary risk. I trust that when a parent tells me they are trying a biomedical intervention that this has been a difficult decision for them to make and that they truly believe it will help their child. I think some providers need to begin respecting parent's decisions a bit more because I feel there is a essence of " well I'm the professional so I know best " at the moment. We aren't all like that and I know you will find somebody to employ who will have more faith in your knowledge of what's best for your child. As someone else has pointed out, you are better off without them! Best wishes, Lucy.
