My son, 12.5 had an assessment by an orthodontist at GOS yesterday, he

commented that the teeth and gums were remarkabley healthy, no signs

of disease or decay whatsoever. He was surprised to hear that my son

is dairy free, (he's been CFGF+SoyF for 8 years). So I explained that

also meant NO sugar at all, just fresh meat and veg, eggs and rice

(yes I know high glyciemic). Plus calcium supp and NO Fluoride or

other nasties.

The diet seems to work well for the teeth. He has no hidden sugar

since no processed foods, has never developed a 'sweet tooth', and

doesn't like fruit. Only drinks water or rice milk-substitute.

Hi, I just went to the dentist yesterday with jay, with 2 cavities, he also never has sweets and was breastfed (hardly ever wanted normal solid food) until 2. 5 years, although he was demand fed and I suspect that this in itself is  definitely not  good for the teeth. Jay kisses me a lot, well more of a lick actually and a few times I have had a feeling that his saliva was, I don't know how to describe it but I definitely think there's something there to be looked into,it sometimes feels kind of stingy on my skin,  best wishes Josie ps while we're on the subject of teeth has anyone got any teeth brushing tips cos I find that really hard, he just bites on the bush to avoid me doing them, apart from tickling him I don't know how to get a good brushing each timeOn 28 Apr 2006, at 21:46, bbrowne123 wrote: Just interested in whether this is a common thread with our kids. Does ASD kids have bad dentistry of other causes than bad eating habits,

like

bad oral hygiene and

less functioning immune system ??

No Tom's teeth are fine. He's only just lost his upper front tooth and

he's seven and a half.

Teeth fine here also, beautifully white and straight, but 5.3 and no loss of any tooth, have read that low thyroid can cause delayed tooth loss. DD was 5.1 when she lost her first tooth.

Tom’s only 3 and a 1/3 and his teeth

are ok so far (touch wood). We also have problems with brushing. But I’m

extremely interested in the bacteria in the respiratory system bit. I’m

asthmatic (Tom’s mum) and my teeth are appalling. I think me and Tom’s

dad both have so many related gut problems just none of them as serious as Tom’s.

Poll, how many of you have asd kids with bad dental

decay?

Just

interested in whether this is a common thread with our kids. My

boys teeth are rotting no end. Front teeth are wearing away and all

molars are black. He gets no sweets and was on a bottle till 2.5yrs.

Hi, my kid also had very rotten baby teeth, but i think this was due

to his diet mainly consisting of Garibaldi biscuits and also his

refusal to let us brush his teeth!!!

We are now working really hard at keeping his permanent teeth decay

free. Two trips to hospital and 2 GA's for dental work is enough for

me, don't ever want to go there again if i can help it.

He is still reluctant to let us brush his teeth thoroughly but i back

this up with letting him chew sugar-free gum regularly ( the one with

xylitol in it) and i also add xylitol to his drinks, as he refuses to

drink just water and hates milk as well. Xylitol inhibits the growth

of the bacteria in the mouth that cause decay. His diet has improved

somewhat from the above, which probably also helps!

Chewing gum stuck to the sofa is a small price to pay to keep him

decay free!!!

Yep, has had most of his baby teeth out, I put it mainly down

to too much juice and rice milk and not enogh of letting us brush his

teeth.
