Karac has gone to gymnastics for a couple of years. He loves it. At first he ran around the gym crazy and they weren't sure he could stay, but he has a great one on one LPT who teaches him, and now he is totally compliant. Has learned to do observational learning, and can follow sequences of behavior. He only takes it once a week, and I wish she could work with him more. He just appears so normal when he is working with her. I think that is a great idea! Pat K

Physical activity is very important for children on the spectrum.

Gymnastics is a great activity for kids on the spectrum. It helps

them gain awareness of their body, improves sensory processing,

increases their fragile sense of balance and coordination, improves

their ability to follow directions from others, and gives them a

great sense of confidence. I coach soccer and basketball programs

for children with autism. As a psychologist I used these activities

to improve a host of variables that is often thought as difficult to

do with children with autism (processing multiple information

simultaneously, rapidly shift gears, emotional regulation, etc.)

You know, I think there is something there with athletics & autistic children.... GW, has been doing Tae Bo since he was about 2 years old..... he loves it.....I have ordered more dvd's mainly for him, although I try to work out too..... but he is also great at hitting a baseball, now running the bases is a little work, but he hits great.... and left handed at that.... :) Aprilpkuenstler@... wrote: Karac

Hello all,

I too had my son in gymnastics and at first it was a

struggle(resistant, tantrums)but after a few sessions he really did well.He did

this when he was younger and it taught him how to wait, take turns, probably helps

with emotional regulation as well outside of the physical activity that is a

benefit.I'm planning on getting him back into it.The gymnastics place that we go

to has a specific class, one day a week that they offer that is for special needs

kids. You may have to check the gyms near you and call and ask.Or maybe check

with any local autism/resource or parent support groups

Good luck to you!

OKay, you are going to laugh I know....but Blanks, Tae Bo, exerciese videos....it hit the scene about 8years ago or so.....they are exercise tapes/cds that involve music, aerobic, and tae bo moves all together.....being the uncoordinated person that I am, they were hard at first, but the moves are very concentrated, it involves kicking, punching, and you are constantly, constantly moving; which, is why I think GW loves them so much....because once he gets going~ most of the programs are 1hour long, he keeps going with them until it is done! Pat, My first suggestion is start with Ebay.....The dvd that got GW started is TAEBO live! It has 4 vidoes: 1. Instructional 2.Basic workout 3. Advanced workout then 4.8minute workout! It is his absolute favorite and getting to the point where he is doing the basic, advanced, and 8minute in succession. When he is getting very hyper, making lots of noises, jumping constantly, and otherwise going insane~~ I tell him it is time to Tae Bo....and off he goes! I would suggest starting with that first, because it was the first series released by Blanks! Currently, there are 14 TAEBO live dvd's being offered on ebay...if you are unfamiliar with ebay, or uncomfortable, let me know...! For those in Michigan in the Macomb Township area, American Gymnastics

used to have sessions once a week for special needs kids (mostly

autistic). The location is in Chesterfield Township, 23 Mile and

Gratiot. I don't live near there anymore so I'm not sure if they're

still having sessions.
