Persephone ate 6 seeds. However the fruit was not from Hell. The fruit

was from Earth, which is why she had to stay. When her daughter was taken

by Hades into the Underworld, Demeter warned Persephone to eat nothing,

lest she be compelled to stay forever. Hades tricked Persephone into

eating 6 seeds of a pomegranate, and Demeter negotiated with Hades to get

Persephone back on Earth for 6 months, with then 6 months' winter.

Pomegranates have never been reviled because of this, as it wasn't their

fault.
