Hi Everyone....

Melinda I have my son connected to the Grotto Shriners out of New York and through them I was given a dentist who specializes in special needs children and yes they accept children with autism. I found them through CARD and they connected us to them Josh loves his dentist and he can handle going. I think you might have a CARD center in IL and ask and see if they are able to connect you with the Grotto Shriners in New York hope that helps in Kissimmee FL

What part of the state is ville in and how far are you willing to drive?

Question about Dentists

Hello everyone. My name is Melinda and I have a 6 year old high-functioning autistic boy. I have been signed up in the group for about a year, I just never post messages. I usually read what you all talk about and it helps some. Anyway, I have a question about a dentist. He is in a special kindergarten class this year for Autistic kids and is repeating the class this fall. They need him to see a dentist. Can anyone tell me how I can find one close to my area that is really good with autistic kids? I live in ville, IL. It's really scarey to take him to someone who I don't know anything about and the dentist ending up not being very good. I heard of one in Winchester but everyone says he's mean to the kids and talks terriable to them. Please help!

It's near Springfield. About 30 miles. I got a list from Public Aid of Dentists that take Medical Cards and deal with special needs kids, but I hear they aren't very good. Any of them! I don't want to take a chance and deal with something bad, do you know what I mean?......I hear of at least 3 of them that are very impatient with the kids and hurt them and all kinds of stuff. I know you can't believe everything you hear, but I don't know what to do. Should I just take my chances?

Melinda,

My autistic son goes to Miles of Smiles in Peoria Illinois. The

dentist there is very child friendly and it only took about 10

minutes for my son (who never lets anyone touch his mouth) to allow

him to look in his mouth. I realize it may be about 1 1/2 hour

drive (maybe less), but I do recommend him.

I can't recommend someone in your area. I can tell you

our story with dentists. I have 2 PDD. My oldest was/is

non-verbal. We took him at age 6 to a child-friendly

dentist (who happen to be female) She registered us at

the hospital with the entire staff and backup staff, and

we had to put him to sleep to work on him. She x-rayed

cleaned fixed anything (one cavity) and sealed his teeth.

(It's like nail polish for the teeth, so he wouldn't get

cavities, no matter how well or not well he brushes).

It took 2 hours, nausea afterwards til bedtime. He loved

oranges/orange juice at that time, so he wanted it when

he came home, but it made him vomit. Just water is the rule.

My second son went thru the same procedure at age 6-7.

The older boy (Josh) returned at age 12 for his back molars.

He still had to be anestizied, he wouldn't cooperate.

The second one went back last summer for his back molars,

and he was able to be worked on with the usual gas.

I experienced so much stress before these sessions. The kids

were fine, I just felt so scared and guilty about putting

them to sleep. In the end, they adapted nicely, and it went

well. Now I periodically play dentist with them so maybe

the next visit will go even smoother.

The ironic thing is my 9 yr old " Normal " daughter was

actually the worst about the dentist than both boys put

together!!!

don't remember,

Please do not just take a chance. this encounter will color every other encounter your child has with a dentist. I am in Alaska so can not give you any referrals but the American Dental Association should be able to. But I would recommend that you go to the office and interview the dentist before making your child an appointment. Interviewing Doctors, Dentists and Therapist has become my standard practice. I make sure they understand my child's needs and if I am comfortable with them and they are comfortable working with my child then I will make an appointment. always,

Hi Melinda,

Sorry this is late in coming. I checked with a friend who works in social services in central IL, and she said to check with Hope School in Springfield (apparently a wealth of resources) or with Easter Seals.
