Hi

I know you gave me some advice previously when I was quivering about SCD.... Have been having a bit of a go this last fortnight whilst has been on Easter hols. Basically she had rice bread previously and now doesnt... We ahve tried coconut bread as a replacemnet (as posted on the LOD list). She loves it, but like all suspicious muyms that worries me, mmmmm....

Having been indoctrinated to LOD for the past 6 months I am worried about the nuttiness of SCD. I thot I remebered that your kid didnt tolerate nuts... How do you know... What are the symptoms... Is he hyper??...

I guess I feel kinda bad that s diet is quite limited and to drop her favourite thing (rice bread from Barkat!!) is such a shame...

Have you seen big wows from SCD???

Like Elaine, bit of a newbie so any advice about menus especially breakfast, much appreciated.

Yes I do. It is just that the introductory diet has yogurt in it and

gelatine, neither of which I thought could have just now (and have no

idea how do make them).

Eggs, he does not like. Can he have any fruit, maybe even peeled pears?

Re: starting SCD

Do you have the SCD book " breaking the vicious cycle " ?

Caroline,

Did you do the introductory diet? I too stopped rice bread and rice milk

this week. But I thought that you

had to do the introductory diet and also that coconut should not be introduced

for a month or two. Please correct

me but my understanding was that following the introductory diet then one food

at a time is introduced and if there is any worsening of bowel symptoms then

you are not ready for that item. I

am keeping off school next week to do this as I don’t think I will

be able to manage lunches in the early days.

Tom ate bolognaise sauce for breakfast - i.e. beef with all allowed

veg diced into it and herbs, also meatballs of ground chicken, butter

beans and so on. You have to forget what we consider normal meals and

just make sure you get enough calories in. But you can hide a

multitude of sins in bolognaise sauce. and there is a pear cordial

that you dilute with no sugar on the Dietary needs direct site. And

the macaroons are quite good, as are nuggest coated in ground almonds

to make them crunchy. And I presume Xylitol is OK on SCD as it's not

actual sugar. Well worth a go. We only stopped because TOm is so

skinny anyway and was losing weight. His school is really supportive

of everything we do with him but they were concerned at continuing the

diet when he lost 2 Ibs and didn't regain them.

It is a pain to do unless as a family you eat meat and two veg at all

meals. If you DO - and you can skip potatoes, then it's a doddle.

Hi Elaine

You can also eat cooked carrots on the intro diet. Joe has been on

SCD for almost two years now. It really helped gut wise.

We did the intro diet for 2 days then added one SCD legal food back in

every 5 days. I remember Joe was really hungry, and I mean REALLY. He

ate a whole cooked organic chicken a day plus 2lb carrots for about 2

weeks. It cost me a fortune! And he ate so many carrots he turned

orange.

Have you looked at peacanbread.com? They have lots of kid friendly

recipes. Joe wouldn't eat eggs by themselves either but there is a

recipe for chicken cupcake which he would eat, so he'd have that for

breakfast plus some nitrate and sugar free bacon.

I don't think xylitol is allowed on SCD actually Steph, but honey is.

Good luck

Thanks ,

I know that you can’t have xylitol and that has a nut allergy (but not to

almonds). I spoke to Pam Ferro at DAN conference and

she said I could try almonds in a couple of months. Did you use Bolognese during introductory

diet?

Hi ,

I am trying SCD because ’s gut

is awful.  He has been GF/CF since he was

2 1/2 , he is now 8 ½ and yeast free, sugar free, soy

and corn free since November.  He became

incontinent of faeces a year ago (prior to which he was totally independent at

the toilet) and he has not regained continence.  We are hoping SCd will help gut and also

incontinence.  He has made such great

progress in all other areas since starting DAN which delights us, but the

incontinence is such a hindrance and awful for Tom.  Do you happen to have the recipe for chicken

cupcakes (only thing is can’t have almonds for a month or so).  I will go shopping tomorrow and buy plenty of

meat.  Did you have to keep an eye on Joe’s

weight?  Did SCD help his gut?

Finally can I use peeled pears or ripe

bananas in the beginning or do I have to wait until intro has finished and

bowels are improving?

Hi Elaine

We are hoping SCd will help gut and also incontinence.

I hope so too! It did for Joe. The first time he used the toilet

for a poo was about a month after starting SCD.

Do

> you happen to have the recipe for chicken cupcakes (only thing is

> can't have almonds for a month or so).

It is on the pecanbread website, not sure I'm allowed to post it

here! It doesn't have nuts in so is fine for the intro diet.

Did you have to keep an eye on Joe's weight?

Do you mean in terms of him over or under weight? Joe is quite a

big boy, On 95th percentile for height and weight, so being

underweight has never been an issue for us, thankfully. He eats

alot but is not overweight and SCD has not changed anything there

for us.

Did SCD help

> his gut?

Yes, somewhat, but we started Houston enzymes about 6 weeks into SCD

and they helped alot too. It didn't do the full job though,

although things got better he still had loose stools and didnt poo

often enough (about every 2-3 days). Funnily enough Rob Nijssen's

Threewells protocol seems to have sorted that and he now has formed

stools and goes most days.

>

> Finally can I use peeled pears or ripe bananas in the begining

I believe you can use ripe bananas, as long as they are very ripe

with lots of black spots on, but I am talking from memory here. You

can introduce cooked peeled pears after the intro, but I don't think

you can have them on the intro itself. I think they were one of the

first foods we introduced.

Please feel free to email me off-list if I can help any more - good

luck

,

Thanks for the info. I will check pecanbread, I do get that

list and currently there are about 7000 e-mails on my computer and so they

should be there. Regards ’s

incontinence I spoke to jerry Kratzinel at Dan and he

thought was incontinent (again) and so we re following the following

protocol (don’t know if would help anybody else). Micralax enemas for 5 days.

We are on day 5, to start benefiber for bulk

and high dose vit c as laxative. Hopefully it will help. has never had a weight problem

either. I will put together a small

list of what I am doing and will mail off list.

Thanks

to be honest I can't remember. I do know that he ate a lot of nuts

which doens't help you at all if has a nut allergy. SHame

you can't have xylitol - I wonder why as it has no effect on Tom at

all. He can't work out why he's not getting his usual " high " off

it. He ate macaroons, bolognaise, chicken pancakes, nuggets,

beefburgers (lots of) and the courgette lasagne which we thought

he'd shun but he gobbled up. The pecan bread site is good for

recipes - or reminders of things that taste quite normal but can be

eaten. If I had the discipline I'd do this diet myself - it's very

healthy.
