Donna,

We give this drug to and have not seen any adverse reactions. We

give it at bedtime. Note that we give it for ADHD behaviors not autism

behaviors.

Hi Donna,

was put on Risperdal when he was 5. He is now 7 1/2. We started on

a low dose. There was an immediate benefit in his sleep pattern. He was

only sleeping 3 -4 hours a night at the time. He also had an amazing change

in his eye contact. It was virtually non existant before Risperdal. In

some ways, I felt like a fog had lifted. He was " hungrier " , that being the

only negative side effect. But is an extremely healthy eater. He

loves taboulie and broccoli(can't ever spell that), so I increased the

amount of low cal foods he ate and we have kept things under control. This

January we made a significant increase in his dose, to include a morning

dose. We did this because of a mood disorder that he has developed. Our

goal was to stabilize the cyclical mood swings that he has experienced. It

did help somewhat for that, but what was more amazing is that now he has

practically " typical " eye contact and in the month of January he had a

learning spurt and met all of his IEP goals, months before we expected.

When I started the meds and also when I increased them, I purposely did NOT

tell his teachers or therapists, because I wanted to see if they truly saw a

difference. I thought if I told them, I might not get an honest

observation. Most of them did approach me and say they thought was

doing great and making remarkable progress. I know how you feel about

starting meds but I know I have no regrets. is home today

recovering from his 12th surgery, a brand new set of t-tubes for his ears.

Hope this helps.

Dr. Capone wanted to put Rochelle on resperdal when I last saw him in late 2001.

Let me know how it goes. I decided to go with the diet first.

Hi Donna,

Maddie reminds me of Brookie sometimes with the water and refrigerator

interventions that you have to undertake. But, that is the biggest thing we

have noticed so far, that Brook is not obsessed with water like he was in the

past. He still enjoys it, but is not obsessed. I know that Maddie has some

obsessions too, so maybe Risperdal would help her in that area also. We were

not expecting the water obsession to improve with Risperdal, but it has been

the biggest improvement!

Brook has been on Risperdal for a little over a year now. We started

very slowly and increased very slowly. He takes Risperdal 3 times a day and

we feel that it is making a difference in all of our lives. He drools now,

and he is hungrier too. His weight gain hasn't been too bad, probably because

he is such a picky eater and we do try to control his fat intake. I think he

isn't as hungry as he was before now that he has become accustomed to the

med. He is also more aware of his environment and seems to understand more.

When he is off school for breaks he is OK, not miserable like before without

his routine. We used to have a hard time even keeping him happy on weekends

in the past, but now he is content even when his routine changes.

I can now take him to a specialist by myself which would have been very

difficult in the past, so he is more cooperative and less fearful. Lately he

has been very affectionate and we have been having lots and lots of hugs and

kisses. Also, Brook's Dr. at the psychopharmacology clinic feels that he is

doing much better from her observations and our discussions.

Also we are going to try and teach him things now that we had tried in

the past and didn't have success with. I think we have a much better chance

now that he is paying more attention and I believe we will make some

progress. I hope this helps.

Elie was on Risperdal in varying doses for over a year. While it did

improve his sleep patterns and there was some improvement in behavior, there

also was a more stoic, glum, glazed person who gained an enormous amount of

weight very quickly. When I tell you that he has been off this med for just

over 2 years and on an amphetamine for almost a year, you will understand

my chock when I weighed him this week for the first time in 6 onths and

found he has lost over 20 lbs!! I knew he had lost some weight, but he eats

exactly the same amount of measured food now as then but still lost weight.

So, one must weigh the need of the med against all the different possible

permutations of side effects and decide what you can live with.

Ok gang, for all those whose kids are on risperdal. Duff is coming home

from Belgium tomorrow and I have to provide him with all my homework on

meds.

I have been back and forth with Dr. Capone and it's likely we will start

with low dose/once a day risperdal. Duff is going to want to know side

effects and he's like me......when he reads them, his stomach will do flips

(although Maddie is on zantac which will help decrease the appetite and

weight gain accompanying risperdal....yet another tidbit I have learned in

this journey). So what I need from you guys is what side effects as well

as

benefits you have seen while your child has been on risperdal. Margaret

was kind enough to share Gareth's story earlier, and I will share that with

Duff as well. If it's ok with you, I will print it out and share it with

Duff along with all my other data.

Thanks guys.

This is off the subject of PA but all of us deal with other issues so I thought

I would throw it out there. I went to a pain clinic yesterday because of my

terrible left sided abdominal pain. They put me on a drug called neurontin. I

took the first dose last night this morning I woke up feeling like I had been

run over by a mac truck. I am exhausted and have the spacey head feeling. Has

anyone dealt with this drug? Dana

I am not sure what they are using Neurontin for? It is not a benign drug and expensive if u have to pay for it. Tiped sad Send form miiPhone ;-)May your pressure be low!CE Grim MDSpecializing in DifficultHypertensionOn Dec 19, 2009, at 9:39 AM, cowdoc@... wrote:

a thanks for the reply. I had heard they used it for diabetic neuropathy and many people are on it for that situation. It has definitely thrown me for a loop this morning. We are titrating it up every 3-5 days to be to a total of 2700 mg a day. I just took a 100 mg last night and am trashed. I will be calling the pain management guys on Monday. I wonder if the body will adjust the more I take it. DanaSent from my Verizon Wireless BlackBerryFrom: a Hall <shahall >

They tried my father on it when he was about 80 for pain from diabetic neuropathy and it really knocked him for a loop. It caused dizziness, sedation and depression in him. Neurontin was originally developed for epilepsy and has a lot of side effects, just be aware.

I have been fighting upper quadrant left sided abdominal pain. There is no trigger or any indication why it hits. It is any where from a 6-8 on pain scale. My gi docs suspected colon spasm but anti-spasmotics do not work. One of my motility docs thinks it is Possibly small adhesions from my gastric pacer leads since I am at such a high voltage. Tramadol was working but now just takes the edge off and I am miserable when it hits. They do not want to put me on narcotics because of my gastroparesis. If it was a very small adrenal tumor not visible on ct would it cause this kind of pain? The pain is not over my kidney area though. I just took 100mg last night I can't imagine being on 2700 mg would be like. I am definitely calling the pain med guys on Monday. I have been trying to link the pain to when I am eating or what I am eating but doesn't seem to matter. It hit me hard on the plane ride to my brothers. This has been going on for a while but has gotten worse in the last 4 months. My gastroparesis they thought was caused by high level fentanyl use for my pancreatitis for almost 2 years. They suspected my gastric function would return after I got off of it but it didn't. Even with the pacer we have had to ramp up the voltage from 2 volts to 8.2 volts and time on and off from 0.2 seconds on 5 seconds off to 2 on 3 off. There was a time when I was part of a study where it got turned off for a while it was awful I was back to being miserable again. The pain is deeper than muscle more visceral. Thanks for your time I apologize for it being off the subject. Dana, I cannot believe pain comes from no where. My daughter-in-law was in lots of pain

for several years. Finally she was

sent to a pain clinic where they told her it was all in her head. Finally, she went to Mayo where they

found Celiac. Have you been tested

for that?

Val thanks for the reply yes I have been tested for celiac. I have a suspicion it may be pancreas related possibly sludge in the pancreatic duct. All my pancreatic pain was on my left side instead of right. My docs don't think so but we really don't know for sure. Had a colonoscopy done when I had my upper GI done and found nothing. I also had a video capsule done to make sure there was nothing in the rest of the small intestine that we could not see with the upper GI nothing found there either. Who knows what the pain is from nobody can give me a good answer. All I know is I am miserable at times throughout the day and would like to find some relief. As I suspect Sx may be related to low K I do not consider it off subject. The fact that the voltage has had to be turned up again makes me suspect the pacer. This was the same problem with the Baropacers in the 70s. Because the pain occurs every day you say it would seem to me to be worthwhile to turn it off for a day to see if the pain stops. I have never had shingles. I am currently waiting for a call back from the pain management doc to do some kind of pain block because I can't deal with the neurontin.
