Guest guest
Hi Joyce - I started driving using handcontrols - 30 years ago. At the time I got hand controls made by Kroepke. I have gotten the same controls ever since. I really like them because they are a very simple design. One drawback is that they are made for specific models of cars so you cannot always transfer them from one vehicle to the next. My first pair my father installed. The subsequent ones I have had done by a place in Rhode Island called RI Limb. I once had some other controls put in by different vendor and I really didn't like them. They were very big and clunky and they took up a lot of the leg room. Even though you could take them from car to car I was concerned that if I ever got rear-ended my legs would get mangled by the hand controls. So I had them removed and went back to Kroepke. Here is a link to their website. http://www.kroepkekontrols.com/ They are excellent family business to deal with. You may have to find someone in your area who is certified to install these. That was the problem I ran into with the other set of hand controls... there was no one in VT that was certified to install Kroepke so they put in something else. Like I say I had them removed and then my husband drove me and the car down to Rhode Island to get the Kroepke ones installed. I basically learned to drive (gas and brake) with the hand controls... today I mainly use the brake. I have considered taking them out all together but would never forgive myself if I couldn't get to the brake in time and caused an accident. My hand controls have been paid for by the State Voc Rehab center. Part of the reason, is because it allows me to get to work. You should check into it. The last pair of Kropeke controls were about $750.00. Some are much more. There are some car dealers that will equip a car with controls for free but I did not go that route... but you should check into places like Ford etc... to see what they have for " deals " . Ford Mobility Motoring Program 1-800-952-2248 -- I am sure there are others. In any case if you end up paying for them you can certainly deduct them from your taxes. Also in many cases if your car has adaptive equipment you do not have to pay the sales and/or registration tax on the car in some states. So you want to check into all that. Best of Luck! I love my hand controls and always have.... driving is FREEDOM!! Cheryl
