Lois, it is all trial and error. For example, on one of your emails the mother used Klonopin to help get her son off of Abilify, and it worked great for her son; the ped psy. prescribed it for Karac and it made him wild! For a brief period of time Karac was given Depakote; it made him depressed and caused him to walk with his foot turned in. But I am sure it has been helpful to others. The only meds that we have found helpful are Clonidine and Xanax. I guess the Clonidine didn't help JJ; I'm so sorry, but I'm sure there is something that will help JJ; it just takes time to find it. Keep me informed; I really care. Pat K

My son is on Depakote. I'm not sure I'm really noticing a difference in him, but then again, out of the about 15 medications we've tried, most haven't done much. Each child's body chemistry is different though, so what works for one might not work for another. Make sure they do a full lover panel on him before they start the meds and then again about 3 months later as Depakote can cause liver damage.

How old is your son?

Nicky's been on depakene since march 2002. Doctor put him on it because of paroxysmal

activity (and we suspect he may have been having absence siezures). He was very tired the first week on it but then adjusted. The only other affect that's possibly from the depakene is a weight gain. Make sure the bloodwork you get done includes a liver/hepatic panel and valproic acid (that's the depakene/depakote) level

My son tried depekote a few years ago, and again just a couple of

months ago. He gets the same problem, which is that it works good for

a short time then it appears to stop working. We have raised the

dose, but still it does nothing. Also, it caused my son to eat like

there was no tomorrow!

Best of luck,

Is he still taking it? J seems a " little " better today......Still a lot of

My son is currently taking 500mg of the extended release depekote.

He was at 750mg but he was having awful stomach aches that could not

be controlled. He seems the best he has been in a while on a

cocktail of Seroquel, Lamictal, Depekote, and Trileptal and Xanax.

I have had to put J back on the resperdal.....and the Depakote. I would

reather he was on none on the meds but he has regressed badly since I took

him off the alibilify. The Dr. said that by taking J off the alibilify it

affected the nurons that the alibilify was helping and now we have mania

real bad. We has a bad night last night......he was up until 4:30 this

morning hollering out and had hit the wall in his room and cracked the wall.

I gave him the resperdal this morning and for a little bit he acted more

like the old J BUT right now he is going thru a phase of hollering out. He

does it so long and with such intensaty that he breaks out in a sweat real

bad. Then he gets some agression. I pray that he will come back to us. Lois

My son also has his manic episodes. I don't understand it because

he has tried all the newer mood stabilizers, but they just don't

control him. I am beginning to think he may be treatment resistant.

His thing is to slam his bedroom door. We just moved into our house

a month and a half ago, and he already has cracks in the wall around

his door frame! I try to look at it more understandingly (if that

is a word) because he at least is not hurting himself (he was having

lots of self abuse in the past.) We use a prn of xanax for when my

son gets into a bad state of mind. He uses 1mg when he starts. It

doesn't fix it but calms him.

Has he

, that is so interesting. I wonder if the Xanax will stop working for Karac after about a year too. The doctor tried Konopin first; it didn't work for karac either. Did you have any side effects from the Xanax? So is the Xanax PRN all that your son is on? Pat K

We started using xanax in Nov. of 2001. (He started using it for

severe anxiety and panic symptoms.) He was on .25mg twice a day

until

Dec. 2002, then it just didn't work anymore. We raised the dose

to .5mg twice a day, but it just didn't help as much as it did

before. We weaned him off it and tried ativan. It didn't work well.

Tried klonopin, but that didn't work either. Seroquel finally took

away the panic attacks. In March of 2004, we started using xanax

again occasionally. It appears that as long as we use it

occasionally

and not on a daily basis, it helps. His body must just burn it up

and

becomes used to it. I am glad it is working well for Karac. It is

wonderful that he found something that helps!

Thanks, , that is so encouraging that you have had no side effects from the Xanas, because we haven't had any either and I was just waiting for the other shoe to drop.

Do you get any financial assistance? I am so excited; I have just found out that I may get some financial assistance for working with my grandchild every day. I have been working with him every day for the past ten years. I wish it would be retroactive. smile. Pat K

No side effects at all from the xanax. I think it is the only med

that he hasn't had any side effects from. Xanax is the only prn that

he has, but he is on a scheduled dose of many other meds: Lamictal

150mg in am and pm, seroquel 25mg in am 300 mg in pm, depekote 500mg

in pm, and trileptal 150mg in pm. So far, this mix of meds seems to

help. We also tried the enzyme pills, homeopathic remedies, a

holistic doctor, the gfcf diet, and probably other things that I am

forgetting at the moment. I am not thrilled about all the

medications, but we need something that can get him able to function.

I hope the xanax keeps working for Karac, it is so frustrating when

something works then just stops.

Unfortunately, he has always had these behaviors. They have just

gotten worse in the past 8 months or so. I think he is starting to

go thru puberty, which could be why he is getting worse.
