Guest guest
Lois, Benadryl helps Evan but I know that it does not always work with some of our kids. The first time was given Benadryl he climbed the walls. Literally, since they were living in a motor home at the time. Now his pdoc has prescribed it again for him to calm him down and he can take it just fine. Betty ----- Original Message ----- From: lois noland Hi all, I took J to the Dr. today because of his behaviours.........He upped J's resperdal from 0.25mg to 0.5mg in the morning and 1 mg. at night with a half a dose in the afternoon-evening if he needs it. He said I am to give J a Benadral (sp)? tablet at night as it will help keep the tardia stuff from affecting J Has anyone else tried this? Good or bad? Thanks!! Guest guest
We have had Karac off of Geodon for over two months and the TD is decreasing. He takes a Zanax and .1 Clonadine at night to sleep through the night. He has been on the Zanax for two months and he is happy and has had no melt downs in two months. Guest guest
Yes, Zanax can be addictive, but he has been on it two months and I'm not too concerned about that. It is given for anxiety and obcessive compulsiveness. It just seems to help Karac sleep at night and balances his moods. It is also helpful in controling the TD. He just takes one at bedtime. The Zanax and the .1 mg. Clonidine just help Karac sleep all night. If Karac continues to do as well as he has done these past two months we will be very thankful. He is happy; there is no aggression whatsoever; he is sleeping through the night; the school reports that he is having super, awesome days. He is enjoying basketball, swimming, equest, and gymnastics. He is compliant and has begun to get intrinsic satisfaction out of doing things. He seems to feel good and he has lost all the weight that he gained with the Risperdal. (He was on Rispedal before he was changed to Geodon) He never did as well on these medications as he has done on the Zanax, and he would never have been on those medications if I had been the mother, but I am the mother-in-law. Guest guest
That is how Karac was on the benadryl. We will never give it to Karac again. Zanax and Clonidine are the only meds that have helped Karac and he has had just about everything else. I think you just have to find what works for your son. It is trial and error because not only these kids but all of us respond differently to different medications. Pat K
Guest guest
I Just went to the web and typed in Tardive Dyskinesia and hit "go". I got pages of information about TD. Pat K
Guest guest
It is suppose to be addictive, and if that becomes a problem we will deal with it. I am not nearly as concerned about that side affect as all the side affects of those antipsychotic meds that the doctors have been prescribing, and right now inspite of the TD Karac is happier and doing better than he has done in years. Zanax is an antianxiety agent just like Klonopin and Ambien. However it is a Benzodiazepine which is suppose to be helpful for TD, and it has been helpful with Karac's TD. Zanax is prescribed for obcessive-compulsive disorders, general anxiety and panic disorders. I think a lot of these autistic kids have a lot of anxiety and obcessive behavior. Guest guest
My son's doc said all of those medications are going to have long term usage side effects. Have you been told what side effects you can expect from Zanax? Did you son have trouble sleeping before? Is that a side effect of the Zanax? What is the reason for the Clonadine? My son's aggressive behavior seems to be seasonal. Has anyone experienced this? Every late October, my son becomes aggressive to the point of having to have the " behavior specialist " come in. Then late November he's fine. It happens again in the Springtime. Weird! Adrienne ----Original Message Follows---- From: pkuenstler@... Guest guest
Adrienne, it may be weird but it is not unusal. Besides hearing the same thing from autism lists, the same thing is repeated on the bipolar lists. The only difference that it lasts longer than a month for most of them. Some also experience more behavioral problems around full moon. Betty ----- Original Message ----- From: " Adrienne Mysliwiec " <adriennegm@...> > My son's aggressive behavior seems to be seasonal. The only thing that comes to mind is that night and day are about equal during this time of year--as in autumnal and vernal equinox. My son has had trouble adjusting to the time changes in both seasons--could be they are ultra sensitive to the changes, slight for you and me but intense for some of our affected kids. Have you ever heard of Seasonal Affective Disorder? just a thought.
Guest guest
Lois the bad day may just have been from the change experienced from stopping the Benadryl. He may have a better day today. Pat K
Guest guest
It seems to me like Karac had an immediate positive reaction to the Zanax. His mother stumbled on to it accidentally. It was prescribed for her and Karac had become so aggressive with the Benadryl and she had stopped the Benadryl and he wasn't sleeping at night. She was at her wits end; so she remembered that the Zanax had helped her sleep; so she gave him a Zanax and he slept all night and woke up happier and with less TD than he had in months. She called the doctor for a prescription for him and the doctor didn't want to give it because of the addiction problem, but relented and gave a prescription for a lower dosage. That was over two months ago and Karac has been a happy lamb every since. This may not be the answer for you, but hang in there; you will find the answer. Guest guest
Lois-We had to take off of risperdal because it make her seizures uncontrolable. She is on zonegran for the seizures now but that made the anxiety and agression worse. We put her on abilify. is doing great on it.We do see some anxiety in crowds-church,family gatherings, etc so we are using ativan as needed. We are upping her abilify dose to see if it will take away the need for the ativan. Risperdal worked great for except we see seizures if we give it too her. If I give benedryl the first two doses work great and then she becomes aggressive, hyper, and extremely sleepless. Elaine Pat, I got ahold of the Dr. and I see him tuesday.
