Did the orthotist mention metal braces to you? With these you would just wear

your normal size and the brace would fit in the heels of your shoes. Plastic

AFOS can be hard to get shoes to fit. A lot depends on how well they are made

and how tight to your foot they fit. I find it hard to get anything other than

tennis shoes or hiking boots to work for me, For dressier shoes I use my metal

braces and it is easier. Plus metal braces are easier to wear and much less hot

in warm weather. Plastic braces can rub your skin and you may need callouses to

wear them. Again that doesn't happen with the metal ones. There is a choice,

hope your orthotist has explained it to you.
