Guest guest
I have 4 boys with autism, one of whom has tourettes and Bipolar. He can be very out of control. He was on clonodine and risperadol for a long time and we did not see any side effects with him but some weight gain. He got use to the meds and they stopped working also. So we tried strattera. It seems to be doing o.k. for him so far. The only side effect we have seen is he got tummy aches and we reduced the dose and that took care of that. However it did cause a little appetite decrease and he lost some weight. It does help his behaviors. He's not perfect by no means, but much more easy to handle. Guest guest
Evan was on Risperdal for some time and it was changed a few years ago to Abilify which worked as well as the Risperdal without the side effects. It is used as a mood stabliser with some that have bipolar. I think it is a schizophrenia med originally. Evan's new telemedicind doctor wants to add Trileptal as a mood stablizer to his meds. He is also on Strattera which I had hoped would help his running but it has not. She hopes the Trileptal will help with that. His previous telemedicine doctor had him put on Trazodone for sleeping and this doctor just suggested raising it. It is an antidepressant but used for a med for sleeping since that is a side effect. Since there is so much bipolar in our family all this makes sense to me because Evan cannot tell us how he feels. The previous telemedicine doctor thought I was way off to worry about it but apparently this new one does not and I just mentioned that his mom was not raising him since she was bipolar and so was his other two brothers, bipolar/ADHD is quite a combination. Evan could have autism/bipolar/ADHD for all we know. I do not know how they would dx him beyond the autism with his level of autism. I am on the bipolar parents list on and there are more than one family with children with bipolar and autism in one form or another. Seizures seem to be common for some of the children and for some of them also rages that when they are past the child does not remember what happened so my uneducated guess would be that your child does NOT remember. If you can get the book, The Bipolar Child, it might be a great investment for you. The authors' website www.bipolarchild.com has lots of information as well as www.bpkids.org Have they done any tests on him yet. I know it was so hard when Evan went in for those sleep deprived tests to see if he was having any seizures. Oh, I almost forgot his new telemedicine doctor insisted that I put Evan on Omega 3s. I told her that he was taking them and she said that she wanted him to have 1 gram daily which is twice what I was giving him at 500 mg a day. Omega 3s also help people with bipolar. It helps with the depression. Betty
