Guest guest
, In California you do need to notify the DMV when you start driving with hand controls. They will give you a driving test to make sure you can safely operate your vehicle using the device. I learned to use mine in about 20 minutes. My driving examiner said I did a better job than most people she tested. You don't need to have strong hands either. Alice in CA
Guest guest
What kind of hand control is best and where do we get one? I have concluded that my husband definitely would be better off with hand controls for his vehicle. I called the company that installed our stair climber, and they said he has to be evaluated for the type of hand control, and they don't know an evaluator in our area [Ventura, CA]. How hard is it to learn to use the controls? Would they interfere with my foot driving of the vehicle? I think Toyota would help us pay for it as this is a new Prius. Guest guest
Hi Elinor- About hand controls for the car. Call your Medical Supply Stores. That's how I purchased mine and they installed it. It is so very easy to use. I was a little apprehensive when I first got behind the wheel after it was installed and I think it took all of 5 minutes to figure out how much pressure I needed to use it. I only use my brake control. I have no problem using the car gas pedal. It does not interfere at all with the normal use of the as and brake pedals. And here in Fl if you get a new car the co. does pay for it. I love using mine and I felt 100% safer being on the road too. Good luck. Guest guest
If you do purchase a new car, the dealer might pick up the charge, always ask, VW picked up the installation of my hand controls. Laine
Guest guest
Hi Tamara, What brand of car did you buy? Corporate web sites should give you the info about the respective programs. As far as the industry goes Toyota has by far the best financial support ( $1000 ). It cost me $1162 to get the controls installed so net my cost was $162.. very much worth the money and peace of mind. The controls I chose use one lever attached to the steering column that controls both gas & brakes. Push forward to brake and push down for the gas. You get used to it very quickly. If you've already had one wreck, it's time to get this done, you won't regret it. Take good care, Mark
