As someone who rides and wore AFOs for a long time, what I did was put

zippers/velcro on my boots. Or, I would occasionally use just the paddock boots

and put a half chap over it.

You say your daughter is in college? I am a senior at the University of

Kentucky. I have officially owned my horse for one year now. :) I even compete

intercollegiately. Does she?
