Guest guest
Speaking of travel...has any one every taken say a gallon of KT on a flight? Will they let such a creature through and onto the plane? Guest guest
Just refer to it as raw homemade vinegar which is how we mark packages for international shipping. Guest guest
Hi Mark - If you are going to be vacationing for an extended period (few weeks or more), you might try mailing a scoby/starter to yourself at your destination so you can brew while you're there. That's what I did when I went to Hawaii. Had to wait several days for the brew to finish, but at least I didn't have to worry about taking a supply with me. I normally do w/o it on shorter trips, but if I had to, I'd take it along in a plastic bottle (the kind that bottled water comes in) and call it " iced tea. " Happy travels, Nori > I'm going on vacation soon and wondered how others stored their teas for travel.

Guest guest
If it goes through the xray machines does it kill it? -- At 09:56 PM 7/1/2005, you wrote: >Hi Mark - If you are going to be vacationing for an extended period >(few weeks or more), you might try mailing a scoby/starter to yourself >at your destination so you can brew while you're there. Guest guest
Very good question ...any thoughts? Tim Baker <vbaker@...> wrote: If it goes through the xray machines does it kill it? --
Guest guest
Another thought of traveling with kombucha to set up a new starter somewhere would be to use pressed extract from several mushrooms. The simple pressed extract (squeezing the juice out of the mushrooms) has a higher concentration of components than the KT less the sugar and alcohol. Additionally this extract would have a lower pH affording a better starter tea than regular KT. Using 8 fl ounces of this as the starter tea in your new batch should work well. Label as " vinegar " and should encounter few, if any problems. Bringing in LIVE foods are restricted in most areas. Therefore most security people would not hesitate to put it through their RAY machines. Don't know what would happen there but it may make for a nice experiment. I would assume since the time is limited that there would not be complete destruction of the full spectrum of life within the KT Extract. If anyone does run through please inform this list. BTW, I would double zip lock seal and tape the bottle as leakage could be expected. Unless you carry on as a plastic soda bottle. Ed Kasper LAc. Guest guest
I can't speak directly about kombucha, but I've travelled w/ my kefir grains many times and in all cases have taken them through x-ray machines at the airport. The grains don't appear to be affected -- they produce kefir just as quickly as they do back home. Their appearance, texture, etc., are also unchanged. So I think it's likely that your kombucha will still be viable if you take it through an x- ray machine. Guest guest
Hi , I made up a big batch of Schwelmer beer bottles (like small Grolsch) and stashed them (unrefrigerated) in our Airstream for an extended trip. I put four in a high cupboard (it was cold when we left home)and immediately forgot about them. The rest were packed in the truck or in various lower cupboards and each was great when I opened it to drink. After 6 months on the road, through cold weather, followed by increasing heat, to high desert heat eventually, the forgotten four up in the hottest part of the rig fared just fine. No explosions, thanks goodness! Now if I could figure out how to successfully nurse a SCOBY over America's frequently bone-shaking infrastructure,I'd be so very happy, as the home brew is just so much better than the bought; especially as there are areas where KT simply can't be bought. Any suggestions? anyone? Léna > > ORIGINAL KOMBUCHA (OK) Listi'm going on an extended car trip cross country. would it be safe to travel with some kombucha in the grolish type bottles? Guest guest
I always take kombucha with me when I travel. I always make sure to keep in a closed cooler just in case. I add ice if there is anything else in the cooler that needs it. I spent all last week in a hotel for a conference and kept my cooler in my room with both my kombucha and kefir grains. I put ice in it only when I brought a doggy bag back from dinner. SW VA USA
Guest guest
Hi Arielle and EveryOne, Kombucha acts a lot like Coca Cola when it is shaken up it tends to explode.... If you can keep your bottles of Kombucha cold and inside a strong cooler it might be fine to take them on a long car trip. If not, I wouldn't try it with glass bottles.
