We recieve only services that the school provides. No outside vendors. Yes, we do have a daily log, the teacher tells us what he aggression was carried out, nothing about what proceeded it. They tell us he just does it for no reason. We have stated many times to them what CB is asking for. He is really verbal about wanting to use his tools. However, they say he is evading work...He isnt even allowed to use the bathroom during a work period. They do not use ABA, they have their own system. CB is 7 1/2.

This school sounds really harsh. There is no way my child would be treated like that. I know in most states if you are not happy with the school you can ask for a in home tutor. You know they would not want to pay for that. I just found out our mr/dd program sends out a behavior consultant to the class room to evual and recommend things for certain behaviors also they can come to your home. Plus, they make sure the child is getting everything they are allowed through the district ,and that the class room is set up properly. Have you ever checked into your county MR/DD programs? I hope they can help you!!!

No, they hired the people they feel are qualified. We have asked to do just that, but they dont use ABA and therefore it would serve no purpose in their school. Mind you this school was one of the best we saw, and , we would like to keep CB there, just for continuity and they have done a fine job in academics.

There is one other thing ...his best friend Jordan left at the end of summer, but of course his feelings (autistics have Feelings ? ) have not been even considered. If need be though we will have to except a new school . Some of them are pretty bad here.

ps. Today was a no pupil day...We had a blast making peanut butter chocolate chip cookies. Watch and see tomorrow he will bring home "Great Day "

Is there a way to contact his little friend? Don't you guys have county mr/dd services? They should have a behavioral consultant or someone trained to help deal with these issues. What exactly are his tools?

Sent Mommy your question Dannilynn ....As for Granny here.. I cant understand why they cant seem to get it right. His tools are (and he was TAUGHT this at pre-school ) when things get too much he is allowed to go to the "quiet room ". Which in this case was a speech therapy room full of games and toys. He never spent more than a few minutes in the room, didnt play with all the toys. He would Talk to himself in the mirror ( at that time it was just babbling ) He likes pressure on his feet, head, hands. Sent his pilates ball to school for that, they took it out of the room, all the kids wanted it ( wish I could afford 6 more for the class) His pre school class used a web. The kids at the pre-school had a cubby hole for their brushes, chewies,( the kids could go and get what they needed ) no such thing at this school. Mind you his pre-school class was public and they was no behavior plan ...one was not needed. His kindergarden class (public ) booted him for aggression ( SPENT ONLY TWO MONTHS in this class AND his was abused in this class ), home one year ( The Granny taught him to read ) We sued...the school district pays for CB's tuition. One year at this school. We recieve no services from the regional center...according to them he doesnt need any.

Guys, this is a boy who spent two hours in line last week with no meltdowns ( Daddy got a ticket )

Yesterday I read the recipe out loud for the cookies ,he did the measuring, and stirring by himself ( oh ... i cracked the egg too LOL )

Its no wonder they want to come and observe us ...they think we are LIARS

ps...to Pat, Granny just treats him like a person, no baby talk, no baloney and does his sensory work when asked.. is that such a big deal ? Correct me if Im wrong.

That sounds very good to me,CB's Granny. You are a wonderful grandmother. What method did you use to teach CB to read? I taught Karac to read with Edmark. In the 5 years that Karac has been in public school, he has had only one teacher who has taught him anything. Has CB had ABA? Has anyone worked with him outside of school besides you? Does CB have an aide at school? Could an aide from the school come to your home and learn how you work with him? The one year that Karac made so much progress at school was the year that the teacher also came to my house and learned to work with Karac the way that I work with him. CB has language; can't he tell them what he needs before he loses control? When karac has had as much as he can tolerate, he says, "I'm finished with _________". Wednesday he got tired of horseback riding before his hour was up; he told the teacher, "I'm finished riding the horse"; so the teacher concluded the lesson. I told her you don't know what progress that is; in the past he would have just bitten you when he had enough. You have so much love and tenacity; I know that you will find a way to work this out for CB. Keep me informed; I want to know when you are victorious. Pat K

CB had a good day at school on Thursday as expected, however, he did start to cry during movies on Friday. Reason : Daddy no longer works in his classroom on Fridays( New job ) Mommy was there and loved him ...said Daddy and CB will go to the pumpkin patch today.. My son tried to get Fidays off and work every Saturday instead, but it was a no go with his bosses.

Teaching reading and that always came easy for me. Both my kids read well before Kindergarden. I start with the alphabet, colors, shapes . I would take constuction paper cut out the material, and stick it to my kitchen wall. ( I ve got a gigantic kitchen) CB was on the pc at age one with Fisher Price Toddler, so buying programs really helped. Reading is something that came easily to him ( his Kindergarden teacher said he had an excellent memory, that he wasnt reading, just memorizing) But, LOL, thats how we all start out. Phonics is still a daily part of his speaking.Leap Frog has its book reader and it is still one of his favorite toys ( it also helped with his fine motor). So it just went hand in hand. Math with Dr.Suess program ( loves it ) Science we tackle with making potion ( vinegar and baking soda ) and doing experiments. He learns so very quickly, tell him something once and its a done deal( not so on his Dad LOL ) Yes, CB does speak , but the problems is nobody listens at the school. He is not allowed to be "finished" Till its all done. I think some of the problem is the school "forgets " that he is indeed autistic. He appears so "typical " They dont realized that CB only said "E" until he was 3 years old. Said Grandma at age 4 1/2 ( I cried ) Tenacity LOL, you bet, the hours of repeating some smallest things. I would like to address the "over correction" issue. CB has a time delay on the spoken word as well as listening. Sometimes he doesnt get it all ...By repeating and encouraging him it gets the job done. He also learns that throwing the pegs was a terrible idea. I have in the past done hand over hand with him picking up or whatever he needed to correct.NO yelling, spanking. The very worst punishment he gets is sitting in the chair for 3 minutes ( egg timer ) In fact CB knows Granny is mad by the fact that I LOWER my voice , gets his attention FAST. Tantrum coming on ? We Count..... Positive punishment is the reinforcing of good behavior and correcting the bad without pain, humiliation, and in fact giving the child a sence of satisfaction for correcting the problem.

CB uses agression at school because they dont listen, plain and simple. They reinforce this behavior by giving him their full attention, dont want to color ? Scratch the aide, you get to stop coloring for punishment time. That didnt work ? Go after another kid...that works EVERYTIME.. now you get to go to quiet room .According to the school ABA would give him conflicting messages ( thats what they said ) as they dont use it.Whew, sorry this was so long LOL

What a creative teacher you are!! CB is so blessed!! Did you ever teach professionally? It really sounds like the school doesn't have a clue about how to handle CB. You know intelligent people stop doing what doesn't work and start trying something else. I still believe you will prevail. Hang in there. Pat K

No, I have never taught LOL ( oh those poor kids if I had ) I was an office manager, but the Mommy and Daddy asked Granny to help out for a little while, when CB was an infant. CB has been with me his whole life( they lived with us for a while ) so Ive been a very lucky woman. Mommy and I were just talking about how we should go back to school and show them in the school environment what to do. IM HANGIN PAT ! I always tell my honey-pie you have a rough road to walk, but Granny will walk with you and we'll hold hands and sing the whole way ! LOL

Oh LOL...its his initials. He had a terrible time learning his name. He only said "e " for such a long time., and we just thought well maybe he can say "CB". It worked ! And it stuck as a pet name.

Lucky kids if you had!! Did you retire when CB was born? I had just retired when I diagnosed Karac's autism. I just went back to teaching part-time three years ago. It has been very good for me. I just get Karac every afternoon and on Saturdays and Sundays. I love him like you love CB. I wouldn't trade places with anyone. I love your emails. You are such an inspiration. Pat K
