Guest guest
Yes that tide can turn any day, any hour or any minute! Sorry to hear about the meltdown, but it sounds like you handled well considering! The digusted people in the store don't have a clue! Good for you to tell the old man to mind his own business! If people really only knew! We had another pretty good day today. . .so I'm waiting for the other shoe to fall, so to speak. Very little spitting today, the intensity has died down. We are still ignoring it. And it's working at home! But at the same time, he's been trying some of his old tricks for getting attention tonight. We were at a friends house at the lake and they have lots of ceiling fans in their house and he just loves to go there but hates to leave. We had to leave for a short while, but we were going to come back later. Well he didn't want to leave and started his knee to the nose trick so he could get some sympathy. I made him get in the car. . .said nothing about the behavior. He gives himself away on what he is wanting attention for by saying " Mommy, will you say, yeah, he bumped his nose. " I just don't say anything to him and wait until he says something positive and go with that! I'm learning I have to stick to my guns with this kid! He's got a lot of tricks up his sleeve to try and get the attention. I think these kids are really, really smart. . . they know how to use that manipulation just like any other kid. They just tend to use behaviors more than words since most of them have language delay problems. Well I hope CB had a better day today. You'll have to give us an update! Guest guest
I have a heavy car coat that I put on along with some leather mittens that look like boxing gloves whenever Karac looks like he is going to have a meltdown. I have even slept in them during a period of time when Karac was waking up with night terrors. I don't have to wear them very often any more, and on those times when I do put the coat and mittens on it seems to calm Karac down immediately. It keeps me from being hurt or afraid, and I think it is comforting to Karac to know that I am not going to let him hurt me or himself. Fortunately, he has never had a meltdown with me out in public. Before Karac has a meltdown his eyes dialate and his tone of voice changes; so I know it is coming on, and I make a fast exit. I keep a blanket, music, a drink and some kind of snack in the car for him at all times, and that calms him immediately. His mother doesn't do that; so she has had some public meltdowns. I have tried to teach her to anticipate and avert, I think she may be beginning to catch on. Pat K

Pat K You may want to recheck that. I found that was happening with my son and at the Washington DAN in APril, Dr. Hart showed video of someone having a seizure where they would start to repeat a request and then got violent/had behaviors and then were fine.
