Guest guest
, we all have those days, and this is the perfect place to vent. We all understand. How old is your daughter? Is she verbal? Don't worry about the school; they get paid and they aren't as emotionally involved as we are. Keep the faith. Pat K
Guest guest
( it only worked at the beginning then he > ripped it off ). Sorry I can't help you out, but im hear to listen. > Jessie I am afraid that would be the problem with a helmet. It would only work if you could keep it on her. We can no longer keep and id bracelet on Evan because he has figured out how to work the catch and it does not want to wear them any longer. Yesterday I had to start transporting him home as well as taking him to school. Last year he started taking his seat on the a.m. bus apart and Wednesday he came home sitting on the seat frame with the cushion on the floor beside him. He was still in the harness but he had taken the cushion off the frame. Last year the mechanics bolted the cushion to the seat--they thought it would hold but he took it off the first day. He has gotten out of his safety harness plenty of times and scares the bee jee bees out of the bus drivers. It does go over too well with them to have a kid going out the emergency exit when they are stopped let alone when they are going down the freeway! Grandpa and I went out to dinner again tonight while Evan stayed with his mom and siblings. He got ticked off again that none of us would let him take off checking the doors to all the apartments where she lives so he screamed and screamed most of the way home. Yes, I went over the speed limit to get here. I really need to get those ear plugs or I am going to be losing my hearing. Bob swears that he is not going out again if he has to be in the car when I pick Evan up. But with his short term memory loss I am not sure he will remember that. He has already told me that three times now. Did anyone see the moved, 'the First 50 Dates'? told me the main plot. I told Bob that I need to make a video of his day so he will know what is going on. It is very frustrating to never know just what I tell him that he will remember. Thank goodness he does not have Alzheimer's. Betty

Guest guest
Chelsea,We did not have this problem with probably because he was in a cast for 14 months prior to wearing a brace. And the cast never came off. So going from cast to brace was a smooth transition. I just wanted to let you know I am thinking about you because I can only imagine how hard that must be. I personally think a cast would be more comfortable than the brace. Even if the brace is on correctly. Aubrey is old enough(and smart)to realize the brace comes off. How long does she wear it in a day? Forgive me for asking, what is her curve measuring? Has she already gone through casting? Sorry if this has all been covered. I am praying now for that sweet baby. Guest guest
Hi Chelsea, That sounds awful. She needs to be able to sit and crawl. Have you called the orthosist? If you live close to them - I would go in for a brace check. Hopefully they'll know what to do. Or will at least give you some reassurance that nothing is wrong. One more thought - when you take it off for her break do you notice any red spots? If so, do they go away after 30 minutes? I was told to call if they do not disappear in 30 minutes because that means it's applying too much pressure. Guest guest
Tasha, she wears the brace on for 2 hours off for 30 min. we were supposed to increase the time gradually..however no matter what we do she just screams.i've checked and double checked to make sure nothing is pinching her and its fine. i just believe as you said she knows that it comes off. and im trying my hardest to not take it off when she screams its just so hard when you see her crying to hard. she does get it off for an hour to eat thats what the doctor said to do but im really thinking casting is going to be our best option because she will then know it does not come off and i cant take it off! Guest guest
I'm so sorry she's crying all the time. I was thinking maybe somehon is hurting her but if there are no red marks or bruses I'm kind of stumped. We never had this problem when we got Thaddeus' brace there really wasn't too much fuss and now I think he is comfortable in it. He wears it 20 hours a day and when we first got it we put in on for 30 min and checked the skin and did that 3 times that day. Next day we uped the time to 1 hour the 1.5 and so on and I think about 3 days in I decided to just leave it on because he never had any issues. I'm wondering if it didn't come off ever 2 hours if she would just eventually give up and think it was like a cast?? I would call her Dr and see what they have to say.. Maybe you can get in for casting quicker because she won't wear the brace.. It's worth talking to them about it.All the best and Thaddeus 14 monthsSent from my iPhoneOn Apr 12, 2010, at 1:11 PM, "Chelsea" <softballchick105@...> wrote: she has no red spots and we live about 2 hours away from childrens mercy in kansas. but today she has done nothing but scream yesterday was a little better she did not scream as much. i just am wonderig if its the brace or if shes just cranky today. Guest guest
That is the main advice I give a parent of a child in a brace. ANd the only advice 's doctor gave me.Do NOT take it off if they are crying! Once you do they then associate the brace coming off with crying.Good luck. I know it is all easier said than done. Guest guest
Noah has never been able to have a bowel movement while wearing his brace. The doc said we could just take it off when he had to go to the bathroom and then put it back on. We still do that 2 years later. But one time he had a brace that was so tight that he couldn't go at all. The brace caused him to be constipated. Maybe that's what's going on? I'm not sure. One thing that I would want to stress to the call to the ortho is that she's not able to sit or crawl and it's been a month. Even though our kiddos have a tough time sitting and crawling at first in their casts...they all are able to do it after a few days or more of adjustment. She really needs to be able to do these things otherwise there's no wonder that she wants to be held all the time (because she can't do anything else.) I'm sorry if I'm worrying you more...I don't mean too - I'm really just trying to help. It's tough when they don't have the language to tell you what the problem is and you have to guess : ( I hope things get easier for you soon! Guest guest
I totally agree with Tasha. I liken it to having a child throw a tantrum, you put them in timeout, their room, a playpen, etc., and you go get them when the STOP crying. Even if it is the brace hurting her, you don't want her to learn that she gets her way by crying. Grace did wonderful in her first 2 braces. Then the 3rd one just never really fit right and she hated wearing it. They tried telling me it was just her fighting it, but with as awesome as she had done with the first two, I didn't believe that. Can you post pics of her in the brace? Front and back? Grace's would become unaligned after being in it for about 15-20 minutes. So maybe a pic when you first put it on and another a while later? I believe most (if not all) braces (the overlap/fastening area) should line up down the mid-line. If it's off-set one way or the other, it may be causing or encouraging rotation in her spine (that's what Grace's was doing). Not to scare you, just more to think about it. Let me know when/if you post pics, or you can send them to me direct. Jane janemhar@... Guest guest
i do have one picture of her in her brace, i will have to wait to put up another one as i have broken my camera! ...not to happy about that! but it seemed to line up exact as it always has however when i went to put it on her after her 30 min break it did seem a little harder to fasten the top strap..like it was real tight. so maybe. i have a call into the ortho just waiting to hear back. thanks for all the help! Guest guest
Hi Chelsea, That sounds really rough. I had read somewhere that this is one of the reasons that braces don't work for some children, that is the fact that it is quite tempting to take it off. My daughter is seven and wears a Boston brace. We are on the second one as she outgrew the first one quickly. I am only a mom, but if her curve is over fifty degrees laying down (supine) then it is probably higher when she is upright, due to gravity and that the muscles are not fully developed at her age. This happened in our case. Does she have sensory sensitivities where she would not like that being squeezed feeling. My daughter is much older but seems not to mind being squeezed but she does get hot and sweaty and ask to take it off. > > > > > > > > > Hi Chelsea, > > > > > > That sounds awful.
