Guest guest
Welcome to the group, Gretchen, thanks for your introductory post, and yes, I am the " other Gretchen " here. I am the Founder of the group and principal moderator. There is a DNA blood test for about 12-16 types of CMT now. Athenadiagnostics.com is the commercial lab in the US that does the tests. It is very non-evasive, a simple blood draw, and it is sent to the lab. As for symptoms - well, some/alot/most of us have things in common like fatigue and balance issues, not to mention problems with feet and hands. A good neurologist will take note of your family history and diagnostic tests will be ordered. If you need a doc who knows something about CMT (more than the 'ordinary doc') you might try to sign up with your local MDA clinic. You can find your nearest clinic by going to http://www.mdausa.org and put your zip code in the search box. As for the EMG test - it is pretty invasive and hurts! (I've had 2 and 1/2 of them) and I can see small children being freaked out. I as 15 for my 1st one and totally freaked out. My symptoms of walking odd (rolling out of feet) started when I was about 7. I was diagnosed with I was 10 and almost right away had othopedic surgery to correct that. Again, welcome! I have only met 2 'other Gretchens' in my entire life. Very pleased to meet a third! ~ Gretchen
