Guest guest
Glad to hear you got good news about his scoli. When Madison was in her brace, she got about 6 months wear out of each one. I really would have thought you would go back in 5 months to get a new one made though. We got her first brace made in SLC and the rest in San so I can't really give you any experience with that. I always took her at the five month mark to get a new one made. Our orthotist makes a plaster mold to make her new brace, maybe they are just going to do measurements? I'm not sure. I am sure someone else on the group will have more to say to give you better information. I am sorry to hear about his poor arm. I am glad Dr. Roach was able to take care of him though. Please keep us posted. Jen Madison 8/03 jmdroberts <jmdroberts@...> wrote: We went to SLC a couple weeks ago and got Logan out of his cast and into his brace and it is holding him at 11 deg. I'm wondering if it's because he's had them since he turned 1 and it's maybe a comfort thing??? I don't know but it's cute. But it's nice being able to give him baths. So we got excelent news there but also some bad news... Logan had been pushed of of a little kiddy picnic table by one of his little friends and broke his right arm. His fore arm looked like a V. He had broken both bones in his forarm. So they got reset and a brace put on and when we went to the shriners the next week they took another x-ray before recasting it and the bones had shifted. So they had to admit him and put him under to rebrake his arm and reset the bones. I guess they had already started to stick together since it had been 10 days already. But didn't seem to notice any pain after Dr Roach messed with it. He just looks like an abused child with the brace and arm cast. It was worst when he had the POP cast on though. We got so many rude comments about him. oh well. They'll get over it. Dr Roach wants too see Logan again about his back in 6 months. Is that normal to wear the brace for so long? Thanks! Guest guest
hi Jen, Bridget is on her 3rd brace after casts and she has outgrown each of them in 6 months. Are you thinking Logan would grow out of them sooner because he is only 2. I would measure his height now and then keep track and if he has a huge growth spurt in a couple of months ring them or send an xray just to make sure. Whenever we come the orthotists make Bridge a new brace in 4 days all up. Congratulations on your wonderful results. Wasn't it Logan who had his first cast with one leg in? Guest guest
Yeah Logan did and I think Mason had 1 leg in his cast but I think his curve was lower??? Guest guest
Adria- To the best of my knowledge Erie and Salt Lake City are the only Shriner's Hospitals offering this wonderful treatment using the Mehta method. If you think Dallas might be closer for you, the Texas ish Rite Hospital does do casting also. (not the Mehta technique) Maybe you could contact the ish Rite in Atlanta and see if they are offering it too? Also, does anyone know if the event in TN produced any trained docs in the SE? As of now, I do think Erie is your best choice. There are organizations which can help with your travel expenses too. I have personally dealt with the Shrine in Gwinnett county and they were very helpful to me. While we didn't use their assistance, they did make it available to us if we needed it. Let me know if you have any more questions or would like chat. E-mail me privately with your number and a good time to call. Guest guest
Hi Jen! , Owen's mom here. I've been wondering how you and Logan are doing- he is such a little cutie! Congrats on the brace! But what a bummer about his arm- both bones! Poor little guy. How did his leg/hip heal in the last cast? I hope they were able to fix what the other docs created with their bad casting techniques. Owen had a big spurt up and out with his last brace and totally outgrew it in 3months. They wanted me to keep him in his current one for 5 months (I don't know if you remember our unfortunate scheduling issues, but we didn't leave until late Tuesday of the week after you and Logan left). I wasn't comfortable with that since his other one was much too tight after 3 and they 'gave' me (at my strong urging) and appt for 3 months and another for 4 months. This brace is doing okay so we cancelled the 3 mo and will be going back in January. Just watch the red marks and if they don't go away after about 20-30 minutes, it's too tight. Also Owen grew so much taller that the hips and waist on the brace didn't match his body - another sign it's too small. You could always try asking your care coordinator for an intermediate appt if you think Logan will have a spurt. And when is the newsest arrival? You must be getting close- very exciting! I hope you guys are doing well and hopefully we will cross paths again at SLC in the future- but only for braces, no more broken bones Logan! Take care allison and owen -> > jmdroberts <jmdroberts@...> wrote: > We went to SLC a couple weeks ago and got > Logan out of his cast and > into his brace and it is holding him at 11 deg. Guest guest
Hi !! Nice to hear from you too!! I haven't realy been on the group site too much. I havn't had much spare time with getitng ready for the new baby and taking care of all my daycare kids. Busy, Busy!! Oh, I am gonna be enduced the week after Christmas cause I am concerned about going into labor with all my daycare kids around and the labor with Logan was less than 5 hours from 1st contraction to arrival. I have a few parents that are nurses and can't always get out right away. I don't feel like giving a lession on the birds & the bees already to all of them. The last POP cast Logan was in helped correct that twist in his hips from the spica and his foot followed so that is taken care of and this brace goes down to his hips lower than the cast did so it is keeping it corrected. I asked Dr Roach if there may be something with his bones to make them brake so easily cause his arm broke from falling off a little kiddy table!! And it wasn't an easy brake. It was all deformed and grose. That is just too weird to me but he said the bones are fine. Maybe it's cause he's so little? Or his arm got twisted under the cast?? I don't know I wasn't there. Hopefully no more broken bones. Maybe he's getting it all out of the way while he's young. You guys didn't leave till tuesday? What took so long? Did they end up doing that biopsy on his muscle? (Is that what they were asking to do?) Did they figure out why Owen was leaking the spinal fluid? Or are they worried about it? Guest guest
Hi Jen- I couldn't imagine what you would do if all your day care kids were with you when you went into labor! Good call on getting induced. Owen broke his leg last year and I remember thinking, " Oh no, he must have brittle bone disease or some other horrible disease for this to have happened! " but no, it was just a typical toddler fracture. This might soulnd kind of strange, but I was actualy happy that we had a 'typical' medical incident instead of all the other issues we deal with- his broken leg actually made me feel normal! But I understand about the stares- when Owen had his brace and a full leg cast we sure did get a lot of strange looks! Logan's brake does seem extreme, but with all his prior x-rays they hopefully would have noticed if something was abnormal with his bones. I am very happy to hear that his hips have corrected and that he is back to running around. Last time at SLC they didn't schedule for orthotics to make Owen's brace so we got there on Sunday night, he was molded on Wednesday and they made and fit it Monday-Tuesday the folloeing week! Fortunately my husbands boss was understanding so we just hung out in Salt Lake all week and weekend, went to the mountains, the aquarium,... It was a psuedo-vacation at the Mc House- not what I dream about for a vacation, but it was what we got. Next time they assure me we will be out by Friday. Fingers crossed. They were a bit worried about Owen's spinal fluid but didn't know why it would be leaking so long after his surgery. Our nsgn here in CA isn't too concerned as long as Owen isn't in any pain, but we are having an MRI next week just to make sure it is ok. More sedation So here's hoping that this will be Logan's last cast for many years to come! And please keep me updated about the baby! & owen --- jmdroberts <jmdroberts@...> wrote: > Hi !!
