Guest guest
Hi and list members: This is in Morton Grove. In your post you wrote that you are beginning E/RP soon. We are looking for an E/RP therapist for our 10 1/2 year old son. We love the therapist he has now (Dr. Adina Kleiman in the Knox bldg at Rush North Shore) but she has not had any training in E/RP. She is reading the March and Mulle manual but I think we need someone with experience because my son has a lot of obsessive thoughts that it is hard to get him to share or even acknowledge. Our attemplts with Dr. Kleiman to have him delay or reduce his compulsive behavior and rituals has met with some success but I feel the thoughts in his head will replace the rituals. Would you share the name of your therapist with us? On the topic of sensory issues, in my opinion E/RP doesn't work. My son's sensory issues are the least of his problems now but at one time his inability to tolerate socks and shoes was throwing our whole household into an uproar. We tried every sock we could find and never found one he could tolerate beyond the school day. If a sock didn't feel right when he put it on he never could adjust to keep it on longer than 5 minutes. The problem was only solved when we found seamless socks through someone on this list and made sure his shoes are wides or a brand that runs wide and replacing shoes when the toes are squished on the sides rather than when they ran out of space at the tip of the toe. Clothing issues we gave up on because he would wear certain clothes with no problem even if I would have preferred less sloppy looking clothes at least for some occasions. He has a diagnosis of extreme sensitivity to light which has slowly gotten better but never gone away. You asked " are other peoples kids better in the summer? Is it excercise? Less stress? Chlorine? " I say yes to all those questions! My son is definately better in the summer because of less stress and more exercise. He still has structure with summer school(at Skokie Dist 68 which I bet you are familiar with-it's a great program) and day camp. They are not as stressful for him as full time school. I'm convinced chlorine has something to do with it too because he spent little time in the pool the summer of 2000 and his OCD was worse than in the prior 3 summers when he was constantly in the pool. Not too scientific but I am always on the lookout for what makes a difference since his OCD affects the lives of everyone in our family bigtime. I spent last summer trying to lure him outdoors and into the pool. Unfortunately of all the the O's and C's he has, the obsession that got better was his need to have someone no further than the next room . Now he wants to be alone so he can " daydream " without interuption. The problem is that its not just daydreaming, he is s! ometimes obsessing about someth ing and can't tolerate being interupted. If you are willing to share the name of your therapist email me on or off the list. in Morton Grove, IL (NanF22@...)
