Guest guest
I have a unique problem (I think) that I wanted to gather some thoughts in regards to maximal exertion lifts. Whenever I engage in particulary strenuous 1RM attempt, be it a bench press, deadlift, squat, good morning any variation thereof type of exercise, I get a bloody nose. It started out just trickling but in the last month or so has gotten so horrendous . There is no pain but it qualifies as more than just an " annoyance " to say the least. I usually just go forward and try not to let it interfere with my sessions but I am somewhat concerned. I have heard that this has happened with steroid users and I don't use (not a value judgement just a fact). The only common delineator I can think of is the use of the Valsalva maneuver and exerting so much pressure through my face when I lift. [Your thoughts are probably close to the mark. Some people have more fragile blood vessels in parts of the body, like the nose, and this problem affects some powerlifters, especially those who have prolonged lifts. Mel Siff] Any thoughts?
