Guest guest
NOTE: Especially read the first line in the third paragraph! Why do we just run and walk when our bones and muscles could do much more? http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/medicalnews.php?newsid=30677 16 Sep 2005 Despite having the bones and muscles to perform a variety of gaits, human beings have developed an overwhelming preference for just two: walking and running. Now, computer analysis that allows simulation of infinite two-legged locomotions has shown our favored modes of bi- pedal travel use the least amount of energy. Indeed, in an article published in the current online edition of the British journal Nature, Cornell engineers Andy Ruina and Manoj Srinivasan compare the mechanics of walking and running with " many other strange and unpractised gaits. " They used a set of computer models that simulated physical measurements such as leg length, force, body velocity and trajectory, forward speed and work. " We wish to find how a person can get from one place to another with the least muscle work, " they report. " Why do people not walk or even run with a smooth level gait, like a waiter holding two cups brim- full of boiling coffee? " The engineers' computer simulations conclude that walking is simply most energy efficient for travel at low speeds, and running is best at higher speeds. And, they report, a third walk-run gait is optimal for intermediate speeds, even though humans do not appear to take advantage of it. The findings help to explain why the possible--but preposterous-- gaits in the Monty Python sketch, " Ministry of the Silly Walks, " have never caught on in human locomotion. The researchers add that extensions of this work might improve the design of prosthetic devices and energy-efficient bipedal robots. Guest guest
Hi Blake, I have talked to another mum with a son Ethan with BLEPH here in New Zealand, and she said her son Ethan was born with low muscle tone, I think he is about 10 or so now, and may-be still wearing diapers as he doesn't have control over his bladder, now don't quote me on that but I haven't spoken to her in a very long time, but I know when he was 7 or 8? he was still wearing diapers, I have no clue if it is associated with bleph, guessing not as the eyes seem to be an isolated condition besides the female infertility that is definately linked to BLEPH...Our son is fine, he just has the eye condition, no other issues there, besides hyperactivity:) But I reckon thats just because he's a boy! lol....Rob is our expert here at the site and he is from Aussie to...Shireen is also very clued up as well and always very helpful when there is any queries out there, perhaps they can help you.... You can check our pics out of our wee guy Ethan, he is 6.5 and just had his first surgery this year....He is doing great:) Thanks & talk soon, Leanne NZ
Guest guest
Thank you Leanne, Shireen has contacted us and asked for some more info. We will also contact Rob especially as he is in Aussie as he may have a good Dr that I could see who has more knowledge than we have been able to acquire. I had my first surgery at 8 months of age and have had further surgeries since then. I think I was a bit of an experiment with the surgeries but all is good now. I am a child care worker at a preschool and love my job. Love the pics, Sounds like a great kid. Over the last 10 months regained a lot of my strength. Working out occasionally... determined to be more consistent, I think that will make a huge difference. I think it takes awhile for your body to recover from that kind of " attack " My skin finally looks normal again.. a little older but complexion is clear. Guest guest
I was dx 2005 but at that time I was on cytoxen, later on Enbrel and Cellcept but also all that time on Prednison. I noticed that I had no muscle strength in my midriff and it became worse by the 3rd year. I started AP in 2008 and after I started LDN in 2009 I noticed that my muscle strength had come back some. Due to a fall and surgery I regressed but working on walking again and some weight lifting which seems to help with the muscle issue. I hope to be able to stand upright again or close to it since I also now have scoliosis of the lower back from all the stuff I used from 2005 till 2008. It really made me sick and weak.
