NOTE: Especially read the first line in the third paragraph!

Why do we just run and walk when our bones and muscles could do much

more?

http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/medicalnews.php?newsid=30677

16 Sep 2005

Despite having the bones and muscles to perform a variety of gaits,

human beings have developed an overwhelming preference for just two:

walking and running. Now, computer analysis that allows simulation of

infinite two-legged locomotions has shown our favored modes of bi-

pedal travel use the least amount of energy.

Indeed, in an article published in the current online edition of the

British journal Nature, Cornell engineers Andy Ruina and Manoj

Srinivasan compare the mechanics of walking and running with " many

other strange and unpractised gaits. " They used a set of computer

models that simulated physical measurements such as leg length,

force, body velocity and trajectory, forward speed and work.

" We wish to find how a person can get from one place to another with

the least muscle work, " they report. " Why do people not walk or even

run with a smooth level gait, like a waiter holding two cups brim-

full of boiling coffee? "

The engineers' computer simulations conclude that walking is simply

most energy efficient for travel at low speeds, and running is best

at higher speeds. And, they report, a third walk-run gait is optimal

for intermediate speeds, even though humans do not appear to take

advantage of it.

The findings help to explain why the possible--but preposterous--

gaits in the Monty Python sketch, " Ministry of the Silly Walks, " have

never caught on in human locomotion. The researchers add that

extensions of this work might improve the design of prosthetic

devices and energy-efficient bipedal robots.

Hi Blake,

I have talked to another mum with a son Ethan with BLEPH here in New Zealand, and she said her son Ethan was born with low muscle tone, I think he is about 10 or so now, and may-be still wearing diapers as he doesn't have control over his bladder, now don't quote me on that but I haven't spoken to her in a very long time, but I know when he was 7 or 8? he was still wearing diapers, I have no clue if it is associated with bleph, guessing not as the eyes seem to be an isolated condition besides the female infertility that is definately linked to BLEPH...Our son is fine, he just has the eye condition, no other issues there, besides hyperactivity:) But I reckon thats just because he's a boy! lol....Rob is our expert here at the site and he is from Aussie to...Shireen is also very clued up as well and always very helpful when there is any queries out there, perhaps they can help you....:) You can check our pics out of our wee guy Ethan, he is 6.5 and just had his first surgery this year....He is doing great:) Thanks & talk soon,

Thank you Leanne, Shireen has contacted us and asked for some more info. We will also contact Rob especially as he is in Aussie as he may have a good Dr that I could see who has more knowledge than we have been able to acquire. I had my first surgery at 8 months of age and have had further surgeries since then. I think I was a bit of an experiment with the surgeries but all is good now.

I am a child care worker at a preschool and love my job.

Love the pics, Sounds like a great kid.

dx with DM july 09. Started AP Aug. 09, remission May 2010. A lot of muscle loss

during that time. Over the last 10 months regained a lot of my strength. Working

out occasionally... determined to be more consistent, I think that will make a

huge difference. I think it takes awhile for your body to recover from that kind

of " attack " My skin finally looks normal again.. a little older but complexion

is clear. As my muscle mass has not completely recovered I have similar

questions, thanks for your post!

I check in often but some of the stuff doesn't apply to me.

I would like to find out from another person with DM about muscle loss.

Between August and October of last year my inflammation got worse and my glute

and tricep muscles especially just " collapsed " . Now they sag and I'm wondering

if exercise can get my shape back. Has anyone else experienced this ??

I was dx 2005 but at that time I was on cytoxen, later on Enbrel and Cellcept

but also all that time on Prednison. I noticed that I had no muscle strength in

my midriff and it became worse by the 3rd year. I started AP in 2008 and after I

started LDN in 2009 I noticed that my muscle strength had come back some. Due to

a fall and surgery I regressed but working on walking again and some weight

lifting which seems to help with the muscle issue. I hope to be able to stand

upright again or close to it since I also now have scoliosis of the lower back

from all the stuff I used from 2005 till 2008. It really made me sick and weak.

Sorry Jen - I thought it was Ken's post.

My skin is still red - face, eyelids, neck , chest, upper back, knuckles and

purple knees (especially after a shower).

I am single and looking to date again - I don't know if anyone can get past

my looks. My friends say it's not that bad, but of course I hate the way I

look. Oh and my hair is thinning at an alarming rate - anyone for a bald

lady ?

Thanks for your input,

Eva, is this because of your hip replacement? sally

For the group: After 7 months AP (for RA) I did my lst home IV's: twice day

worser days.....but isn't that how RA works? Now what do I do? Sally

Thank you Eva and for your input into the muscle issue. Even though

I've improved my strength about 80% from last fall - I still feel muscle

fatigue in my upper leg and butt when I climb even a few stairs.

Sally, my guess is that you are herxing. Some of us feel so much worse

for awhile before feeling better. Die off or running hither and yon inside

your body. Can you take a hydrogen peroxide/epson salts bath for 10 minutes

and soak all of that?

rheumatic Re: Muscles

,

Since reaching remission/control of my DM and MCTD with CREST via the AP, I have

most of my strength back. The muscle definition that I had prior to DM is not

the same as before but I ice curl, 10-pin bowl, garden, walk miles up and down

hill, do stairs, ride a bike, open jars, grocery shop and carry my own groceries

to the car, load them, take them out again at home and put them all away, even

the 20 lb bags of sugar or flour. I can carry an 8kg bag of cat food all the way

from the house to the barn as well.

Life is great once again. Hang in there.

I have 4 grandchildren, the latest one is just 2 months old and for the first

time I have been able to hold and carry her around. When the other 3 were born,

holding a baby for more than 2 minutes was impossible. Thanks to the AP I can

experience that joy.

You too will one day get your life back with patience and perseverance and

possibly a lot of tweeking the protocol to conform to your own unique condition.

God Bless,

Carol_DM

Now you all succeeded in making me cry!  I haven't shed a tear in years, but

today, I have tears of joy for all of you.  My heart sings!  Dolores

More than ANYTHING in my whole life of 60 years.........this group has brought

me to tears, opened my heart and right when I want to throw on the

towel............I read your stories, struggles and victories, and once again I

lift my head up and affirm that I will walk this road with all of you to the

finish line...and beyond! I know that my beloved family and friends have no idea

how hugh and empactful my life is (being homebound) by reading your emails each

day! Blessings, Sally

rheumatic Re: Muscles

God Bless,

Carol_DM
