Guest guest
hi jen ! i also watched oprah the other day when she had oz and roisen on the show. now though, there has been a big run on 'the owners manual' at the library, so i couldnt get that book yesterday. oh well, i will get it in the future. the library does not have 'on a diet' though, so i might have to buy that one. the both look like great books. i also heard about the discovery program about 'on a diet' but i dont get the channel so i couldnt watch it i really wanted to! hopefully they will put it on dvd in the future and i can rent it. dr oz. is also the guy who did the 'real age makeover' which is also quite interesting. i watched a dvd presentation that dr oz did for 'real age makeover' during which he explained what high blood pressure was and a host of other ailments, and how to reduce/prevent them. that was quite enlightening and i made my dh watch it because he was suffering from high blood pressure at the time. surprisingly, he seemed to enjoy the show and has made a few changes which the dr advised. i took the 'real age makeover' quiz on the internet and came out a few years younger than my chronological age, which was nice. so, anyway, i agree that what these 2 doctors say is very very interesting and i want to learn more from them. :*carolyn. Guest guest
Hi Jen, I don't usually watch Oprah but it's funny because I had another person suggest YOU: the Owner's manual to me just recently. I got it in from another library to take a look at it. I have heard about the waist measurement being more important than the waist to hip ratio in the book Releasing Fat by Dr. Jay Strand. He suggests a low glycemic eating plan. I've also read that belly fat is due to stress/cortisol, so I can see where it would be very bad for a person. Interesting to read that it causes further damage by releasing toxins into the liver. I've read the waist measurement is to be taken an inch below the belly button and over the illiac crest, is this where they suggest as well? I'm going to be over 32"; I just know it. What kind of plan do Drs. Mehmet Oz and Rosen suggest you do to get rid of the belly fat? Thanks for the informative post. Kerry Jen wrote: On Thursday I watched the beginning of the Oprah show because she had on Drs. Mehmet Oz and Rosen, they wrote the book "YOU: The Owner's Manual." and discussed health and nutrition. Now they have written another book entitled "YOU: On a diet," but it really isn't a "diet" it's a lifestyle change. I haven't had a chance to watch the whole show yet but I did watch the Discovery Health challenge's program about their new book on Friday night. Dr. Oz said that your waist size is more important than your weight. He said that men should have a waist size of 35" or less and that women should have a waist size of 32" or less..... He explained that excess fat around the belly is "fed" to the liver and causes it to release toxins into the body. It was a very interesting program and I'm going to start measuring my stomach every Saturday, but I will continue to weigh myself everyday and post my weight on Mondays. Anyone else watch the programs? Jen
Guest guest
Hi Carolyn, I also watched the real age show and I liked it very much as well. I also get the real age newsletter online, it's pretty cool. When I took the test I was a little younger than my age too probably because I don't smoke and am pretty healthy except of being over-weight. I think that you can order " YOU: On a Diet " through the discovery health channel online. I might order it and I'm hoping to order the owner's manual as well. I liked what the Drs' said about waist-size it made a lot of sense. Of course it would probably also depend on how tall/stocky the person is... but I think they give GREAT advice! I especially like Dr. Oz's tactic of showing people healthy organs and organs from obese people, very effective. Guest guest
Hi Kerry, actually Dr. Oz told people to measure right at their belly-button, I guess so that everyone will measure in the same place each time. I watched the Discovery Health channel's show about " YOU: On a Diet, " but it didn't go into all of the specifics. It said to throw out all hydronogized oils/foods...the Drs' went through the participants ref. and threw out all of the " bad " food. They also told them to do cardio for 30 minutes everyday and to do resistance training (just body weight not using wgts) three days a week... but that is for people that are very obese and don't exercise or are beginners etc... When Oprah shows it again you should watch it. Can you get the Discovery Health Channel? Take care and I'm glad you enjoyed my post, Jen P.S. my belly fat is from stress and from not exercising enough...and my waist is definately over 32 " --- Kerry Kramer <kerrykramer@...> wrote: > Hi Jen, > I don't usually watch Oprah but it's funny because I > had another person suggest YOU: the Owner's manual > to me just recently. Guest guest
I watched it and absolutely loved it. I was chatting with my DH while I was watching it and kept telling him how they were using a lot of gimmicks and scare tactics with showing the diseased body parts, but they were doing it to promote what I think were all very valid points that as a trainer I've been promoting for the last 10 years. I'm just glad to see that they are pushing exercise. I loved the "only 4 exercises you ever need", walk, cardio, strength training, and flexibilty. Guest guest
Kerry, I haven't read their books, but I don't agree with the glycemic index. It was designed for diabetics, not everyone else. As for cortisol, it only effects 2% of the population. The rest of us are just fat from following the wrong eating and exercise plan. As for waist measurement, I do it a little different for my clients. This is a trick I was taught during a certification so that we know we're measuring at the same spot every time. Bend and the waist and find the exact spot of the bend (this requires a little poking around to feel it) and use that as your measurement spot. Some people have higher belly buttons then others, so while an ince below the belly button may be the waist for some, it may be the closer to the hips for others. With the bend, it is dependant on spinal articulation and is not going to move if you gain or lose significant amounts of weight. (Yes, I've seen belly buttons hang in the saggy skin of people who've lost a bunch of weight.) As for their plan, what I saw on Oprah that day was a lot less then is recommended by the ACSM, which is the gold standard in personal training. Their recommendations were closer to the surgeon generals recommendations to maintain health. Guest guest
What does the ACSM require compared to the surgeon generals recommendations? I thought the YOU on a diet plan called for 10,000 steps a day, another cardio workout, strength training 3 days a week and flexibility. Guest guest
I had heard that the glycemic index was taken on an empty stomach and just for that one food only, which would change if you ate other foods along with it. I thought the cortisol was an everybody thing. Here I was blaming my lower belly on stress, you mean I can't do that anymore?! LOL! I like your idea on finding the waist. Thanks, Kerry Tonya wrote: Kerry, I haven't read their books, but I don't agree with the glycemic index. It was designed for diabetics, not everyone else.
