Guest guest
Marsha, I don't want to rain on your nice sunny hopeful thoughts, and I hope they are correct, but I do want to warn you that our daughter held at 19 degrees on her own without any brace or cast for 2 years, then in one growth spurt it was 35. So even though I understand your desire to protect her from the x-ray radiation, it really is the best way to be positive of what her back is doing. I continue to be amazed by so many new cases of Inf. Scoli. This evening I posted a couple of new pictures of Hayden's back that appears to be resolving and straightening itself. I think the last time I posted was in December after her visit with Dr. Gupta at Shriners here in Sacramento, at which time her xrays read as 21 degrees and RVAD of 3. The 21 degrees hadn't changed then from her earlier xrays at 7 weeks old (in Sept). If you happen to look at Hayden's latest picture you'll see that her spine doesn't look like it is crooked at all now......or maybe just the tiniest bit. And the hump around and below the shoulder blade and the other concave side seem to have disappeared. The torticollis has been gone for some time now and she seems to have perfectly stong neck muscles now. Her next visit isn't until April and personally I'm hoping Dr. Gupta doesn't want to xray her and just does a visual on her back. We know she's not out of the woods but everything sure looks good lately. My heart goes out to all of you who have little ones who continue to need braces and/or casts. You have all come to the right place on this site for advice, knowlege and support. After doing research and lurking here for the last few months I am soooo impressed by what I continue to hear and learn from all of you devoted and loving parents. Guest guest
Just curious..............how many has this happen to? Curve held at a certain degree and then growth spurt occurs and curve gets worse? I know every child is different and 's doctor has told me there is always that chance................just curious how common it is for infantile scoliosis. Thanks, Tasha BTW , how old was your daughter when that happen? Did she have to go back in a cast or brace? What was the treatment? " D. Guest guest
I don't know how many it happens to, but we recognized her curve early (before her 1st birthday), it was measured at 19 and we were told that it could resolve, stay the same or get worse and that at that degree we should watch and wait. She went through several growth spurts without any change. Then it changed to 21 and he said if it got to 25 he would brace her to maintain it, but at the next visit (when she was 2 and 3/4) it was up to 35 and he immediately (as in didn't care that we were moving 2 days before) put her into a cast. At the time I was so mad, because I had never even considered casting (or even heard of it) and thought moving to a new home and being put into a cast was too much for a little one, but now I know he was right to move so quickly. I honestly wish that he would have casted her earlier so that we could have harnessed the rapid growth to straighten her, but all of my reading (including Mehta) seems to say that he was following protocol in waiting and watching at 19 and 21 degrees. I would be curious to know how many it has happened to and wonder if that data could push doctors to cast little ones earlier. Guest guest
Hi , When you say that your daughter's measurement was 19 degrees, then 21 degrees, was that the Cobb measurement or the RVAD? One reason we are so hopeful is that Hayden's RVAD on the Dec. xray was only 3. But like I say, we know she is not out of the woods and are watching her very closely. But thanks for your thoughts, we're just hoping and praying for the best. Guest guest
Hi , I am assuming this was before he started the casting process? How has he done in the cast? Forgive me I can't remember. Guest guest
Yes, this was before he was casted. He was diagnosed at 6 months and we began casting at 15 months. I guess it was closer to 9 months that he stayed stable.
