Guest guest
The Britax Regent is the only youth seat with a 5-point harness and fits up to 80 pounds. My son is also a bit husky (40 lbs at 2.5) for his age and I LOVE this car seat! Unlike a lot of toddler seats it doesn't have a rounded back, which provides more support for our braced/casted kids. It has quite a bit of shoulder space and lots of room to grow (I can almost fit in the seat). The 5-point really is the safest option- much safer than a booster. Downfall is the price, around $250 (but it will be the last carseat you'll need to buy) and the size- it is huge! It easily fits in a minivan seat, but might be tight in a sedan. Overall I highly recommend this seat (it is our 3rd carseat, with many, many more sat in) as it really is the safest option, very comfortable for Owen and well worth the cost (target has free shipping). Hope this helps and good luck! --- ctlsmom <ctlsmom@...> wrote: > Any tips out there to help a child in a cast/brace > be more comfortable > in a car seat on a long road trip? Guest guest
I used (and still do actually) the Britax Marathon car seat. I know of 4 other kiddos (not on this group) that used the same one. While casted/braced, Madison took SEVERAL trips all over TX (San to Houston, SA to Dallas, SA to Amarillo) the shortest trip was 5 hours, never any problems or complaints. It's a little more expensive, but it goes until 60 lbs, I think. They also sell a travel bag, with wheels, for it which is great for checking it at airports. We picked ours up at Babies r Us. I don't work for Britax by any stretch of the imagination, but something to think about with them: IF you were in an accident, it's one of the few car insurance companies that will reimburse you for, it's been rated the top car seat for the last 9 years, I think. It's the only one with the same technology as your car's air bag system. It's very easy to remove the cover and wash it. I have also found it very easy to order replacement parts, covers, etc. on line. I am thinking, my parts have all come from VA, so it's possible they're made near you! Hope this helps. ctlsmom <ctlsmom@...> wrote: Any tips out there to help a child in a cast/brace be more comfortable in a car seat on a long road trip? Guest guest
When Lexi was in her cast and now her brace we purchased the Eddie Bauer carseat. ( I think Graco makes this, but am unsure) It also has a 5 pt harness, but what we also liked about it is that it seemed to us anyway wider and with the cast/brace on she wasn't being squished into it. The one we got we ended up ordering online ( I can't remember the site exactly ) because there was the option of a locking reclining back. This seemed to help alot as we only had to recline it one level back and it allowed her to be more comfortable instead of sitting straight up in that thing. Maybe you could just go out , shop around also and try him in a few in the stores. While this won't give you the experience to try out a long trip, you might be able to see if he is more comfortable in one vs. another. Guest guest
Thanks for all or the quick input - again! I will be checking out the seats available in the stores around here. Having a 5 point harness was non-negotiable for us. I did wonder if the reclining feature helped with comfort and it seams it would (Thanks, Tracey!). We have a minivan so we have space to accomidate a big seat if that's what's best for Caleb. I will check out Britax and the others. Thanks, again for he input. Guest guest
Ian's actually never been uncomfortable in his carseat. My recommendation would be to make frequent stops so that he can get out and stretch his legs. We own a Britax Roundabout, but it sounds like your son is ready for a bigger seat. My daughter has the Britax Husky, but it is a pretty large seat. The Britax Marathon is supposed to be a really good seat as well. Guest guest
AFter the advice of the other Moms on the board, we got the Britax Marathon for Evan right before his first cast. I truly think it has made a HUGE difference. We travel from VA to Erie every 6-7 weeks for the cast and spend quite a big amount of time in the car and I think it seems very comfortable for him. Guest guest
I also found that adding a bit more padding, via a memory pillow, helped a lot. You can still tighten the straps on the 5pt harness as snuggly as needed - so there is no extra give in them. Another suggestion that might help is to take your little guy with you and let him choose which one he likes (from the carefully preselected few you have already picked) Sometimes just choosing the color is a big deal and can make all the difference in how comfortable your child is. Depending on the stores in your area, you may even be able to engage some help from an associate who can say " Hey, Caleb! You are getting so big that you need to pick out a new carseat (car throne, car chair - whatever term works) Can I help you do that so you can have the best, most comfortable seat in the car? " Sometimes havng another person do all that, really makes it a big deal and he really will think it is a huge deal. I just got a new seat, due to the car accident, and it is pink. Do you know how thrilled a 4 year old " princess in the making " is with a pink " car throne???? " Actually, it is the first pink car seat I have ever seen - and I knew she would love it. Good Luck! Guest guest
I haven't been on in a while and I've read a few of the replies... all great advice so far. Lacie has been in a brace since nine months. We travel 1-2 times a year 15hrs in the car and we drive 2hrs to Shriners (I so understand the having to pull the car over and take the brace off, we've been there). Our best fix was when we do the 15hr trip we try to drive at night so she sleeps a lot, and we bought a DVD player for the car (A HUGE help. We limit TV a few days before we leave and we buy a new DVD for the road. We hide a new one for the trip back too). I also bring alot of distractions (toys, books, crayons, ect...) and snacks. Good luck on your trip at Christmas, I hope your trip is a smooth as possible. > > Ian's actually never been uncomfortable in his carseat. Guest guest
We have the Britax Husky as well and I added a piece of foam underneath it because our daughter is more comfortable if she can sit at a slight decline verses 90 degrees if that makes sense? So that is what I did and it helps somewhat--she can make the 5 hour trip to grandma's house--but on the 14 hour trip to the our family's beach house she was uncomfortable and we did end up taking the brace off for a bit. ________________________________ From: infantile scoliosis treatment [mailto:infantile scoliosis treatment ] On Behalf Of Claflin Sent: Wednesday, November 29, 2006 6:56 AM infantile scoliosis treatment Subject: Re: car seat comfort Ian's actually never been uncomfortable in his carseat. Guest guest
Hi Jenni, My daughter Abby is going to be 22 months on Dec. 3 and was just put in her brace roughly about a month ago. I was worried about her in her car seat and on long rides but she has done fine and it's as though nothing has changed. We have the Britax Boulevard car seat which also has the side impact protection and Abby loves it!!! She still falls asleep very comfortably in it as she always has even before the brace. The brace doesn't bother her at all while she's in it. We have taken up to a 2 1/2 hour trip with still no problem. I do have it reclined by one step but they say you should anyway until 30 pounds...and Abby is only 27. But even after she hits the 30 pounds, I may still keep it where it is since she is so comfy! I've had no problem washing the fabric and it always comes out clean and looks brand new. I have a mini van and it fits perfectly, but I also have a rental car at the moment which is a little Kia Optima and it still fits perfectly fine in the center and she has plenty of leg room. It was a little pricey, but so worth it when I see how much she loves it and how comfortable she is in it!! and Abby
Guest guest
Thanks for the continued advice! It's comforting to know I'm not alone in learning how to deal w/ the adventures of bracing. We already got a portable DVD player to use on long roadtrips to entertain our older daughter. And when Caleb was tiny, we discovered the success of night travleing. My dad is flying down to help me drive up North since my husband will still be in another state finishing up training before his deployment. I'm a pretty strong individual, but I thought trying to drive that far w/ 2 small kids and 2 big dogs by myself was a bit much. So you see why I'm trying to make sure Caleb will be as comfortable as possible. I know the only way a brace is effective is if it's worn, so I don't want to take it off - unless I'm just shy of needing a rubber room. As for Caleb picking his own seat, I'm not sure he's old enough to care, yet, and I'm thankful for that. He'll be happy w/ whatever I get so I have the freedom to get what fits him most safely and comfortably. Now our daughter, on the other hand, she is all about picking her own belongings. I am right there with you, Gail, on the whole princess thing! Our princess will be 5 years old next week. Last year's party was a " pink princess party. " This year she asked for a " pink nail polish party. " She is having a few little girls over and we (the moms and I) are going to give the girls a little at home spa experience. Anyway, I have tapped into the power of involving the kids in decision-making and in adding their favorite theme whenever possible. Caleb just isn't quite old enough to make use of that, yet. For those who added some padding, did you put it under or on top of the seat cover? Thanks, again, to everyone who has offered experience/advice! Guest guest
Hi, . Sounds like our kids are on similar bracing timelines. And the amount of curvature vs. correction is similar, too. I will be interested to hear how the brace adjusting goes. As Caleb is growing and changing, I'm starting to notice redness in new areas. I'm watching a spot that looks like it might be bruising a bit. I addressed a buldge in Caleb's ribs from the bracing at our last appointment and the Dr. told me some deformation is normal. That doesn't sit too well w/ me so I am going to try to work w/ our insurance to get a 2nd opinion and see about getting a brace that avoids pushing the chest into weird positions. (Some of the moms have shared other options w/ me already.) I assume Abby is in a Boston brace? Caleb is and we are getting good correction (34 deg curve out of brace, 13 deg, in brace), but the whole chest thing bothers me. We live in Virginia so I may try to get up to Erie for another opinion. Anyway, please share the results of your next visit. Thanks for the car seat advice! Guest guest
Ahhh, yes. The 12 Dancing Princesses. I feel that one is somewhere in our future. Aren't girls fun?
