Guest guest
, I thought you may be interested in my SSDI story. When I became disabled 4 years ago, my company REQUIRED me to file for SSDI. I was approved almost immediately, but if it I had not been approved, I would have had to keep filing until I was. My company monthly disability benefit was lowered by the amount I receive from social security. Unfortunately, 80% of my social security benefit is taxable income, whereas my company disability is tax free. They don't point that stuff out to you when you sign up for LTD and pay premiums for full disability benefits. I think of all those extra premiums I paid for the coverage for 22 years to have NON-TAXABLE benefits (I had the option to pay less that would allow taxable benefits), but will never to be able to collect them because of the taxable social security income lowering my company benefit. I guess I'm not complaining because I do make a good income, its just that I don't feel that I'm getting what I paid for. Nonetheless, LTD coverage is something that should not be overlooked by anyone if it is offered by your employer. I sure didn't know all those years ago when I started paying premiums that I was actually going to need the coverage someday!
