Guest guest
Hey , Sorry it took me so long to respoond, We have all been sick..... The appointment wen't great... Sadie got sick the night before our flight and i took her to our family doctor, He told me the pressure would be too much on her little ears if we put her on a plane... so we drove to philly!!! Ohh Myy, what a trip that was......We drove til 8:30 wed. night and we had to stay over in land, we stayed at a holiday inn which was nice , really nice folks there there....The next morning we drove to the hospital in philly, Ohh my goodness, I totally understand what you said about that city, I never would have guessed how bad until i seen it for myself there..... Im soo glad we did not have to spend the night in philly..... Sadie seen Dr. Betz and he was wonderful , he answered all my questions and GREAT NEWS !! He said Sadie has a 19 degree curve lying down and sitting up she is 45 degrees, she has no rotation and her spine is flexible so he feels confidate that a brace 24 hours a day will correct her curve, they did a plaster mold to build her brace by and he is sending her for a M.R.I. we go nov. 7th for that and in 2 more weeks we go back for her brace and Dr. Betz will x-ray her in 3 months to see how she doing... There is concern about G.I. problems with her that they are sending her to a G.I. specialist too, but for the most part i was releived to know she could be helped with a brace ..... If the brace does not help her , he said they would do a cast in the future but at this point she doesn't need a cast.... I really liked the people at Philly, they were really good to Sadie....... The city, that is a different story, lol...lol........ We left for home after her appointment and we stayed over in Waynesboro virginia........ Next time we have to fly, that was too long of a trip for me.... Do you drive everytime to Erie? How long does it take you? Thank you for all the information and support.... Guest guest
Rhonda, How funny that you stayed in Waynesboro, VA and Philly! I have lived in both places! Philly can be a lot of fun, but there are definitely bad areas...I happened to live in a really bad part when I was there. Anyway, I hope the brace helps. I am a bit surprised he didn't cast her though. Hopefully you will see some improvement with the brace. Keep us posted. Guest guest
That sounds like good news and I " m SO glad the trip went well. Maybe it was a blessing in disguise that you ended up driving- who knows! Are you comfortable with the brace vs the cast? IT's awesome that her number is so low- I remember hearing that a curvature of above 20 shows if it's " progressive " or not. I " m sure that bracing will help her and atleast you know what you're facing if it does not. How often will you go back for x-rays to make sure it's not progressing? Since she is so young IF it did progress, then this is the time to get her in a cast and harness her rapid growth. My other question is since there was no MRI- how did he feel comfortable knowing that it was just idiopathic scoli and not a congenital issue? Just curious--- I " m so glad you got back in touch--- I was going to call but must have thrown your number away! We do drive to Erie and it takes 8 hours. Evan's had hand, foot and mouth this week- YUCK! Not sure how he got it, but he's doing really well. Guest guest
I feel lucky b/c he hasn't had BAD symptoms at all, I do see blisters in his mouth,on his hands, feet, and rest of his body, but he copes well. Gracie doesn't go with us- I like to give the whole trip to Evan and be on his schedule and not have to be stopping constantly for her potty breaks, when she's hungry, etc. I figure it's traumatic enough for Evan, we want to focus our attention on him for those two days. Evan had his MRI when he was 4 months old and it was the first time he was ever put to sleep. He didn't to too well with the anesthesia that time, but has done awesome every time since (I guess the Shriner's staff know how to do it better ,HA). He got VERY cold during the MRI, but it is one of those essential things that just had to be done to rule out his scoli being congenital. Sadie will do just fine. They'll let you be there prob. when they put the mask over her to put her to sleep/or give it to her orally and then I had to wait in a waiting room until they paged me. It did take almost 2 and a half hours. Where are you going to have the MRI done? We had in Roanoke. Let me know how whe does once they do it. You may want to request that someone specialized will read her MRI as it pertains to scoli, etc. Just a suggestion. Take care sweetie, You're doing awesome for Sadie. and Evan rhonda mayes <smilegringiggle@...> wrote: Hey , Poor Evan , Bless his heart, that is no fun fun at all..... Guest guest
As far as the MRI, ask that if you can be in the room when it is done ahead of time. I am not sure about every hospital, but here at Texas Children's both my husband and I were allowed to be in the room with Lexi while it was done. They told us ahead of time we could be in there, but just ask in case as we had to fill out paperwork for ourselves to be allowed in. Her MRI took only about an hour and a half once it was started. The anesthesia was administered completely different as well. Because she was so little, she was given an IV prior and also 2 other medications given by shot. It took Lexi awhile to conk out as she was fighting it, so they ended up having to give her the maximum dose. It just put her into a deep sleep and she was completely strapped on the table and wrapped in a blanket as well. They thought it would take her awhile to wake up since they gave her the max dosage, but the timing was perfect because she began to wake up as soon as they brought her out of the machine. I don't know what would have happened had she woken up before they were finished!! She dealt with this anesthesia better than when she has had surgeries though...after her casts and operations she woke up screaming and ready to fight. The MRI she came out of very peacefully....totally different drugs though for this procedure. Good luck and sorry to hear about the hand foot and mouth...that is something we have luckily dodged at preschool. Please let me know how things are ... I " ll talk to you soon.. I wanted to mention too that there will be an ETP in Chicago with Dr. Mehta in June.. Would be an awesome opportunity for her to be examined.. Take care. jenny rhonda mayes wrote: Hey , Sorry it took me so long to respoond, We have all been sick..... Hope little is Evan is doing good... your friend, Rhonda and Sadie basketsnboyds wrote: Just curious how your appointment went in Philly?
