She had a fun time in the tub splashing and playing. Her skin looked good but a little red which resolved after a few hours. I enjoyed cuddling her and rubbing and tickling her back. She'd learned to walk after the first cast was applied and was like a noodle when she first attempted walking with out the cast. Her little bare feet were slippery on the hard wood floors, but after a few minutes she did great, she still looks a little like a penguin when she walks but I'm told that will not last long after we're done casting. After the casting and anesthesia, she was a little mad and grumpy but by the time I got to the recovery room, she'd fallen back to sleep and slept most of the day waking only when the nurses bugged her to take vitals. When she finally woke up in the afternoon, we took the wagon and did some exploring around the hospital. Dr. D'Astous said that we'd take x-rays in the morning and then we could go home. Not wanting to stay another night, because of various reasons, and with Alison doing great, I asked the anesthesiologist if there was a possibility that we could do the x-rays now and go home tonight (Tuesday). She called radiology and they sent us down to have the in cast x-rays done. (it was 5:05, and they are usually gone be 4:30 so we were happy that they could make that happen) The x-rays looked great to me but I'm not the DR. so I'd have to wait to get the numbers. It's Wednesday morning and I just got off the phone with Dr D who called to give me the x-ray report. He said that in this cast she had NO MEASURABLE CURVE! And NO ROTATION! Jumping up and down here.. WOO HOO!!!! I couldn't be happier <BG> What a wonderful blessing to have the facilities, people, Dr's, and techniques available to us to help our little ones. And I'd be a basketcase about this whole thing if not for the information and support from the moms (and dads) at ISOP www.infantilescoliosis.org . What a great support and help from those who've 'been there and done that' (go the site and buy a bracelet if you can, great cause!) Dr D'Astous gave us the option of bracing when this cast is done but compliance, (with my 5 other children who want to hold lil' sis without a brace on), might be an issue. Now mind you, I really enjoyed cuddling my baby without her cast too, but I also really want her spine to remain straight so we may go with one more cast after this one just to be sure. She's only 14 months now so we'll still have some significant spinal growth that we need to be prepared for. While at Shriners, we we're able to meet Breann and her family and talk for a minute. I hope all goes well with their stay there and will look forward to an update. Now I'm off to look for some more cute fabric to decoupage this cast with before the petals start peeling off. & Alison
Guest guest
, this is great news. I am so happy for your family and especially for Alison. I knew you would be happy with Shriner's and the casting procedure they do for these kiddos. I would agree with you to do one more cast after this one just to be on the safe side. Our Dr. in Erie said we could fit for a brace with the next cast, but I am going for one more after that since cole is only 17 months and still has so much growth left. Besides, he'll be out of a cast for 5 weeks with no support, and I think he'll need the extra cast. Are they going to keep Alison in this cast for 3 months too? We will be in St. Aug. 19-26. So close, but still so far. Maybe one day we can meet. Take care, and congrats with Alison's progress! /Cole <urbanmattandrea@...> wrote: Hi All, Well we are back from Shriners in SLC.
