I did keep her hair really short because of the headpiece, she would sweat quite a bit, and the headband that held her head in place would get sweaty too. Underneath she wore a onesie that snapped at the crotch. It prevented the shirt from riding up. I was also able to find sleeveless onesies for the summer. her brace was made out of molded plastic with a foam lining. There were a few holes for ventilation. I guess I am just amamzed at the amount of issues that have arisen from the braces. Makes me wonder if they are being make too tightly, with incorrect materials or what the deal is. We have been using the shits they give us, got to hot, I thought 100% cotton sleeveless undershirts. Helped Wyatt from getting to hot put moved around and rupped causing skin problems. I'm really not sure if anything with help us, we're in Phoenix it's always hot here. If you have any ideas let me know! There are so many options out there now, surely they can come up with a plan that will address Wyatt's scoliosis and keep it in check. Moriah's back did the same thing. Your story sounds so familiar. And the 1st brace was only worn at night. Now he's in it 23 hours. He never stops and is extremely tireless for an almost 2 year old! Wears me out. I do think the brace is tighter on the ribcage than his cast was, but I didn't think it was THAT tight. I'm not trying to scare anyone; we love the removable brace. I just didn't think we'd have the skin issues now. & Jake P.S. I spoke to another mom off-line and she, too, is having the same skin issues we are. Our braces were made at the same place! Guest guest Posted June 16, 2006 Report Share Posted June 16, 2006 Actually our daughter has been in a brace for about 3 months now, we haven't have any problems except like the question i posted earlier, it seems to be getting tight on her. She seems to be wheezing lately and has a cough she can't seem to kick. When we take her out of the brace everything seems fine. As far as rashes or heat...I just use regular clothes on her and she's been fine, if it is a thin shirt she has been wearing she might have a red ring where the holes were drilled, but go away pretty quickly. We were just questioning how quickly they grow out of them. Granted she is indoors in the a/c a majority of the time and our climate isn't quite as bad as others. I am thankful we aren't having the issues others have been having with their brace. Guest guest Posted June 16, 2006 Report Share Posted June 16, 2006 jennifer...... is this just a heat rash you are talking about or he is having sores and blisters? i just think something like a heat rash is to be expected. i know when lexi even came out of her first cast, there were skin issues with that. i guess with something removeable we just see it in a daily basis and naturally w ant to be able to do something for it. that is my opinion anyway. unfortunately, there probably isn't alot that can be done to prevent the rash besides just keeping it as dry and clean as possible ( i know...easier said than done ) you know something i did tonight because lexi hasn't been to the pool in a few days now and has been spending her entire 23 hours in it is i had to use some peroxide on a few mosquito bites to help clear them up....i just rubbed a dab on her stomach where she was getting bumpy and it helped. I DO WANT TO CLARIFY THE SKIN WAS NOT BROKEN ANYWHERE SO IT DIDN'T BURN HER!! i also make sure when she is out of the cast for her hour per day ( unless swimming ) which is usually after bath i let her run around completely nude and let her skin breathe. again....i guess it is just something we have to deal with and try to manage to the best of our abilities. remember the good the casting and bracing are doing for him also and that we just have to get over a few speed bumps here and there along the way :-) HANG IN THERE!! Anyway, I left Madison in the knit rite shirts and she always did great. I did then, and still do wash all of her clothes in Dreft and use baby oxy when necessary. I rubbed her brace with 70% rubbing alcohol evening after removal for her bath. We had two braces made in San and one in SLC. They were identical, and never any of the problems tht have been described. It is my understanding that lotion, powder, corn starch, etc. worsens these symptoms. She used to scare other moms on the playground because she was fearless - and I rarely stopped her from doing something. So she was climbing sliding etc just like all the kids. I guess we were extrememly lucky because she never had heat rash, or skin breakdown or anything like that. She did seem to get extra sweaty on her neck, but I think that was because she had that headpiece thing. I know I did nothing special. She had her onsie, and that was about it. No powders, creams, moleskin etc. Makes me wonder if we just lucked out. I have to say it breaks my heart to hear of all the brace problems. I just want these kids to all get " straightened out " (for lack of a better phrase) as fast as they can so they don't have to deal with these problems. SLC will give you correct information. and the rest of the Mom's, me included, will be glad to point you towards any information we can to help you. There are so many more options now that just waiting around and watching kids get worse. Let me know if I can do anything to help. Underneath she wore a onesie that snapped at the crotch. It prevented the shirt from riding up. I was also able to find sleeveless onesies for the summer. her brace was made out of molded plastic with a foam lining. There were a few holes for ventilation. I guess I am just amamzed at the amount of issues that have arisen from the braces. Makes me wonder if they are being make too tightly, with incorrect materials or what the deal is.
