Guest guest
jennifer, from what we have been taught by our brace guy is that there should be red spots where the brace applies pressure. however, these spots should disappear within about 20 min after brace is removed. i always watch lexi's spots and make sure they go away. we were told not to use anything on shirt, but i can put some powder in her brace and tap off excess. nothing is supposed to touch the skin from what i have been told. lexi will also have other little reddish bumps and spots just from sweating, but i have started changing her shirt about 2-3 times per day to kepp fresh shirts on and cut down on that. like i said, we have been told the red pressure spots will be there, but should go away within 20 or so minutes. like always if you are concerned, check with the doc though. tracey brace advice I need a little advice from you parents who are or have gone the brace route. When I take Jake's brace off at night (for his bath--which he absolutely LOVES), his skin is very irritated. It never was this red between casts. It's not rubbed raw; it's just bright scarlet red. There are no sores though. I wonder if this is normal? I don't know if it's because he's so hot and sweaty? Dr. said it was okay to put cornstarch powder on under shirt. I also wonder if he would be better off without it (the powder, that is). Do any of you have any experience with this? Thanks in advance, & Jake P.S. Had a little argument with hubby yesterday at a graduation party. He took Jake's brace off because he got soaked with sweat from running around. I was outside like a shot! I let him know that if he is going to take the brace off when he feels bad, this is never going to work! I nearly lost it, but hubby is in agreement now. Going to have to keep my eye on that one. I know he knows the gravity of the situation; don't know what he was thinking though! Ugh...
Guest guest
Can't help you w/the brace advice but I read your PS & it's kind of funny... Actually not funny at ALL of course, just typical! I can definitely feel for your frustration, just male mentality I think sometimes, so typical! I could see my husband doing the same thing. So good luck w/that, hopefully you got through & yes just keep an eye out! =) > > I need a little advice from you parents who are or have gone the brace > route. Guest guest
Hi , It is really hard when you go back to a brace from a cast but here's what we found particularly with regards to a hot climate. We live in a subtropical climate so it is very humid. We found Bridget was better off with an all cotton undershirt as this absorbed sweat better and the polyester fibre in the hospital undershirt was just too hot. On hot days when Bridget was getting hot and sweaty, I would take her brace off and change her undershirt then put the brace back on. I would send a fresh shirt to school so that the teachers could change it at lunchtime. Bridget has also been encouraged to spend time out of brace exercising as she needed to build up her trunk muscles again to hold the spine in the corrected position so for a period of time each day we needed to spend time exercising without the brace. I found she had more red areas with her braces over her hip bones and in other pressure spots. She also would get heat rashes. I used the calendular cream and a powder which absorbs perspiration. I can't remember the name now but will find the ingredients. I found the brace tighter than the cast but she did adjust quickly just the same. Hope this helps and good luck. Guest guest
I wonder if he is just hot or could he be allergic to the material? Guest guest
Jake's pressure spots on the back do go away within minutes. He is red mostly around the sides/ribs. I do think this may be heat rash. Tonight for his bath I just let him play and I washed him without babywash/soap in case this was what was bothering him. No. It's the same. It was NOT back to normal when I put his brace back on before bed. I did still put cornstarch powder on. Many of you may not recall but Jake was in a brace before we casted in November 2005. My problem was I could not find a seamless shirt that fit him correctly under his brace, and I had to buy those undershirts from the orthotist which cost the earth ($47 ea in Erie!). These shirts are too thick I think. I would love to change his shirt several times a day, but I am afraid to take the brace off other than that one time at night -- so I don't. And, yes, the brace is much tighter than the cast. His first brace (from Boston) had small holes drilled into it throughout to help with air circulation; this one does not. Jake has adjusted wonderfully other than the redness. & Jake > I need a little advice from you parents who are or have gone the brace > route. Guest guest
I just e-mailed Shriners asking what they think about me finding someone to drill those holes. I don't know why they didn't think of that in Erie. I did think of it, but things were so hectic I didn't remember to ask about it until the drive home! $90!! Yikes. I guess I won't complain anymore. Does your insurance help with that? & Jake > > I need a little advice from you parents who are or have > gone the brace > > route. Guest guest
I didn't even think that the heat rash could prevent us from wearing his brace for a few days. I e-mailed Shriners for advice and asked if we could get holes drilled locally. Hope they get back to me soon. In the meantime I will change his shirt a few times a day and try to keep him cool in the house with A/C. Doc recommended 23 hours a day. And, yes, we can swim and that counts as brace time. I don't have a pool; my mom does, and she hasn't cleaned it for this season yet. I guess I'll send my hubby over tomorrow! Guest guest
Thanks, Deshea! I didn't think of Goldbond, and I have it in Jake's closet. As for insurance picking up tab for shirts -- our insurance stinks! It's a fight for every cent. As you know, we must choose our battles. Something to discuss with Dave. Hope you're enjoying the weather this week! & Jake > > > I need a little advice from you parents who are or > > have > > gone the brace > > > route. Guest guest
We live on the south coast of Massachusetts. We are about 10-15 minutes from the beach!!! Just waiting for it to get warm enough so we can go in the water. & Jake > > > I need a little advice from you parents who are or have > > gone the brace > > > route. Guest guest
Jake's brace is a hard plastic with a foam padding inside. We are going to a locally orthotist tomorrow to have holes drilled with Dr. K's approval. & Jake > > > I need a little advice from you parents who are or have > > gone the brace > > > route. Guest guest
Tracey, Forgot to mention -- our local orthotist has knit-rite shirts for $25. Maddening how different places can charge different prices for the same goods. We purchased them last year when Jake got his 1st brace. I think I will buy a few more tomorrow. Plus they have armpit flaps (on the undershirt) that go over the brace unlike the one we bought in Erie. His brace rubs his armpits raw just like the cast did. Will try to go the insurance/durable medical equipment route now since I have the prescription for the brace in my hands. & Jake > > > I need a little advice from you parents who are or have > > gone the brace > > > route. Guest guest
I had heard about the alcohol from our orthotist in Boston. It's supposed to toughen the skin up. I don't think I'd use it though. They also caution not to use creams, lotions, or other things that could soften the skin under the brace. His heat rash looks like it's getting better. It's no so red anymore; it's fading I think. I kept him indoors today as the humidity was a bit much. I will be changing his undershirt more often. I will buy more tomorrow from our local orthotist. Thank you for everything, & Jake > > > I need a little advice from you parents who are or have > > gone the brace > > > route.
