Guest guest
hey tasha...... glad to hear you guys got his cast put on. just out of curiousity, do you live in tx? only wondering because we too are in tx ( houston area). i saw your question about the sitting up/crawling, etc...... i can't remember how old ryan is, but he must be at walking age you mentioned. when lexi got her first cast, she was a little lazy the first few weeks back. i can only imagine the adjustment they have to make to learning to sit again with that cast on. one thing we did for lexi was bought her a beanbag for when she was sitting down or wanting to lay down to watch tv. it seemed more comfortable for her that way so she could kind of have her legs out in a more straight position than trying to bend and sit. after a few weeks though, she got the hang of picking things up after she learned to bend over in that cast without toppling over ( although she did a few times) and she worked it out learning to get into a sitting position on her own again. for the first week or so we put her coloring books and what not on side tables or the coffee table so she could stand and do it. it will all take some adjusting on everyone's part as i am sure you are learning. good luck and hang in there!! glad to hear they got some good correction. tracey and lexi 's 1st cast WOW what a week it has been. We went on Monday for 's first cast and it went much better than we expected. We are going to ish Rite Children's Hospital in Dallas for those of you that do not know. Shellie, for your " own musing " I guess we will be a case study for the group because ish Rite does not use " Ms. Mehta's techniques " . They told me they do some things she has taught. So I guess we will all see how does. We are happy at ish RIte and hope and pray for GREAT results. Of course if that does not happen we will not hesitate to seek other options. I have so many questions for everyone, but first things first. Before cast 35 degrees.....with cast 15!!! We were very excited about that. His first day was awful because he caught a viral infection that twin brother had on Sunday, BUT we got him in the cast. That was our biggest concern him getting sick before and delaying the cast. So the day after his cast was put on he was running 104.6 fever. It quickly dropped by Tuesday evening so Wednesday was like his first day to feel like doing anything. OK here come the questions. How long does it take them before they can sit up, crawl, move around somewhat normal? He feels the best when he is walking. And has no problem with that. I am following him constantly because he does fall from time to time and can't figure out how to get up. It seems like the cast is not bothering him. It is just when he tries to do something that he would normally do and he can't. We thought the cast was too low, but his doctor took another look at it and said that it would loosen up and he would be able to move better when it did get loose. Its just the part right below his tummy. Below where the cut out is. We try to work with him and make him sit up, but he gets so upset. I am sure it feels so strange to him. I can't imagine. Is it easier for them on the second cast? Diapering is so much fun, LOL, but I think I have a pretty good system going thanks to . I see a lot of you talking about the cast coming off the day before you get the next one. Is that an option your doctor gives you? Just curious. Mom's with twins-how on earth do you do it? I feel like I am giving all my time to and his twin brother, , is getting left out. knows something is different and of course sees the cast. He just cries for me to hold him and I am usually helping . Anyway his next cast will be at the end of September and I will keep you all posted. I am sure I will have more questions as the weeks go by. Tasha and --------------------------------- Talk is cheap. Use Messenger to make PC-to-Phone calls. Great rates starting at 1¢/min. Guest guest
Tasha, Ian was placed in his cast at the age of 15 months as well. He was able to walk in the cast right away, though he did tend to fall more for probably the first month or two. He walked at 10 mos of age, so maybe that gave him more stability since he'd been walking for 5 months prior to getting his cast. He is so used to it now that he never falls. Things he had difficulty with in his first cast were picking things up off the floor, sitting in things like shopping carts, and sitting flat on the floor. I'd say it took about a week or so for him to figure out about picking things up. In the beginning, I would put a small pillow or some sort of support behind his back in shopping carts. I'd say about 3 or 4 weeks into wearing the cast he started being able to sit without support behind him. Now, sitting on the floor took A LONG time for him to do. For the longest time, he would kneel on the floor rather than sit. It took him about 6 months to be able to do that. But, I know other kiddos that didn't have problems with that at all, so I guess it can be pretty individual. I also have this rocking chair/bouncy seat that I used a lot in the beginning because it was reclined and made it easier for him to sit and relax when he was tired of walking. If you are interested, I am sure I can find a link to the chair. It holds up to 40 lbs, so it's not like they will outgrow it that fast...my 4 year old still uses it. Do you have any pics of the cast? I am curious to see what it looks like and how it differs from the casts that the Shriners docs are using. Anyway, the first cast is the toughest, but you quickly adjust. Noelle (12-2-01) Ian (8-15-04) 's 1st cast WOW what a week it has been. Guest guest
Tasha, I forgot to mention that, yes, the part of the cast that goes down to the hips always seems so low! But, that is where they get a lot of correction by keeping the hips stabilized. I also learned at our last visit, that the two pointy parts in the front of the cast is what keeps the spine from rotating in the cast. I always wondered what those were for! Guest guest
, I would love to see the chair you were talking about. Right now I am using a pack-n-play with pillows behind him. I put it in front of the TV and he seems to be OK with that. He walks around for a good while, but then gets tired and will lay back on his pillows in it for at least 30-45 minutes and then he is ready to go again. Plus the pack-n-play keeps him safe from brother. is more of the bully between the two. I do have pictures of his cast. Would I just send them as an attachment to the whole group? I wasn't sure if you guys send them a certain way. Tasha Claflin <noellesmommy@...> wrote: Tasha, Ian was placed in his cast at the age of 15 months as well. Guest guest
Oh, I see that ish Rite is doing the study? How long has it been going on? Will they publish the results soon? I would love to know how many kids are in it and what their curves are. Some of the more complicated curves will affect their research results. I am happy that you were able to get in a cast. That is a great correction. Sorry if I sounded snooty. I have just been exposed to a few docs who are not in this for the kids, but for their own glory and it is irritating. I too will be praying that these casts correct 's scoliosis. Are you in Texas? We travel through on highway 135 to get to San . We will be down there the end of next week for expansions. Guest guest
Shellie, yes we are in Texas. We live in Fort Worth. Me too-I didn't mean to sound snooty either. Of course if we were able to go to a hospital that did Ms. Mehta's work we would be there. All we can do at this point is pray that ish RIte is able to help him and keep an open mind that we may have to go elsewhere. I am really anxious to see what results we get with his first cast. Thanks for the prayers. Tasha and Shellie Grant <shelliegrant@...> wrote: Oh, I see that ish Rite is doing the study? How long has it been going on? Will they publish the results soon? I would love to know how many kids are in it and what their curves are. Some of the more complicated curves will affect their research results. I am happy that you were able to get in a cast. That is a great correction. Sorry if I sounded snooty. I have just been exposed to a few docs who are not in this for the kids, but for their own glory and it is irritating. I too will be praying that these casts correct 's scoliosis. Are you in Texas? We travel through on highway 135 to get to San . We will be down there the end of next week for expansions.
