Guest guest
hello everyone, I do not post often but I do read them all. I trust everyone's advice and have been overwhelmed by the support you all have extended to eachother. I know this safe place and bring answers and the much needed help and support we are all looking for. Now here is my question: My son, who is now 17 was recently switched from 200 mg of luvox to 50 mg of zoloft. Prior to taking luvox, he was on paxil (between 40 and 60 mg.) The paxil was giving him very bad mood swings and was very sedating. He took paxil for 10 months. Then we switched to luvox. Again much too sedating but both the paxil and luvox worked extremely well for the ocd. After a month on the luvox we switched to 50 mg of zoloft. The doctor says that there should be no sedating affects on the zoloft. Well he still appears to be much to tired and now it appears as though alot of the OCD rituals have returned. I must add that he had mid-term exams last week and the OCD returned at the same time. I can't help to wonder though if 50 mg of zoloft is enough. Have any of you parents had your children on zoloft, and at what dosage? How did it work for your children? Thank you, Marsha
Guest guest
Marsha, Our experience with Paxil and Luvox was similar with the sedating affect. And we never got our daughter to nearly the OCD-appropriate dosages. When she was on Zoloft, she did not have problems with the sedating affect. However, she got " wired " and could not sleep. Her problem with Zoloft, however, was probably complicated by her major depression as well. I would be hopeful that after the lingering affects of the Luvox wear off, the Zoloft should not continue to produce the sedating problems. However, my daughter did not feel that she got any relief from the OCD symptoms with the Zoloft. She was at 100 mg. Guest guest
Marsha, The therapeutic dose for sertraline/Zoloft is 75 - 225mg. Everyone is different, but usually the treatment doses for OCD are higher than for depression. My daughter was taking 200mg when she was 9 and under great stress. We did notice a zoloft monster during the first 6 weeks, but to the day, it left and our daughter returned! Today, with ERP, she is taking 50mg. Her OCD is subclinical, but signs of depression are still present. She can't sleep without Trazadone (today 25mg). The zoloft keeps her wide awake all night! hope this helps.... wendy in canada ============================================= Have any of you parents had your children on zoloft, and at >what dosage? Guest guest
Hello Marsha, my daughter just turned 7 and has taken Zoloft over the past year. Her dosage has ranged from 200mg/day to the current 100mg. This drug is activating in her rather than sedating, as she found Luvox. It has been moderately successful in reducing her Os and Cs. I can't tell from your post how long your child has been taking Zoloft. Is it possible the doctor is planning to raise his dose slowly to therapeutic level? Many find starting with a low dose, and slowly raising it over time is an effective way to avoid side-effects such as drowsiness. BTW, it's not always true that higher dose = better symptom control. The challenge with SSRIs is to find the best dose for each individual, which can vary widely. Zoloft offered better symptom control in my child at 150mg than at 200mg with fewer side-effects. I want to put in my usual plug for E & RP. This therapy can reduce or eliminate a child's need for SSRIs, thereby reducing side-effects of all types. If your son does not get this therapy now you may want to look into it.
