That's incredible news! I know you and must be so proud that has progressed so far. I hope you can relax a little knowing he's in Dr. J's capable hands. Of course, as am I just learning with my son, it can get worse in therapy before it gets better. We'll all be sending strength and good vibes for !

Dear Huda,

I think I am the wrong one to ask about the G & T classes. was in

that type of class about 15 years ago. The one he was in tried to make them

stretch their imaginations and creativity. It was basically an enrichment

class.

Huda:

In our school district, the G & T program is a class for identified students who are in the top 95% in intellectual ability and have shown creative & productive thinking and task commitment. In my kids' elementary school, this involves a special class 4 times a week for 45 minutes a day. In this class (called QUEST), the students work on special projects involving creative thinking, critical thinking, and multiple intelligences (example - bodily/kinesthetic, musical, naturalist, etc.).

In other words, the kids work on special projects using creative thought and learn how to research and apply logic and critical thinking to problems. A big part of the last semester each year is a independent study project. In the past, my son has studied tornados and bald eagles. This year he will study vitamins. He has to make an oral presentation at semester's end using posters, models, costumes, tapes, games, etc. demonstrating what he learned about his topic.

In middle school and high school, they also have advanced classes in the regular subjects such as English, Math, etc.

The point of QUEST is to give gifted and talented kids a chance to learn in their own way instead of the standard way. Unfortunately for my son, this requires a great deal of organization and self-discipline. He is having a hard time with these things right now due to his OCD and ADHD.

My daughter was also designated G & T and was put in all honors classes

Freshman year of high school. This proved to be way to difficult.

Sometimes, OCD has a comorbid diagnosis of ADHD and NVLD which makes the

organization of complex school work very difficult. After a brief private

school hiatus, she is back at the high school taking regular classes. I see

this as a real-life response prevention approach because she is learning to

deal with her perfectionism and getting the work done with classes that are

more do-able. Of course, systematic ERP would be better but the school does

not know how to do this, therapists have been vacuous in their ability to

deal with schoolwork, and my daughter doesn't want a doctor. She does not

know that she is really treating herself by dealing with the work and trying

to get it in on time. The other day she said " I only got a 92 instead of

100. " I was thrilled with this anti-perfection result.

We still have a ways to go. She does most of her work in the wee hours

of the morning because she procrastinates and postpones. I'm still trying to

think of ideas to tackle this problem. Have any?
