Welcome ,

You will love this group. Good for you for doing the 3 day walk and congratulations that you are a 2.5 year survivor. I'm coming up to 14 years (not breast cancer) and I'm always glad to hear of other survivors. I enjoy step as well. Yoga should be a good gentle workout for you with your rheumatoid arthritis, Lilias is a good one for beginners, she's very gentle, not many people have heard of her I'm sure, and I'm sure you will get lots of suggestions from the wonderful exercisers on the list.

Glad you found the list, looking forward to getting to know you and hearing about your workouts,

Kerry

Hi, I just joined the group especially because I'm looking for advice about exercise videos. I'm primarily a walker (did the Breast Cancer 3-Day last year, 60 miles over 3 days, I'm a 2.5 year survivor) but have taken step classes and enjoyed them. I haven't been exercising much this summer and now that the kids are in school I'm ready to start again. I haven't done many videos but am interested in trying yoga or pilates and toning videos especially. I've lost over 22 pounds this year and am at the weight I've always wanted to be but there's some loose skin to deal with now! :-) I'm also rapidly approaching 40 (in January) so that doesn't help I'm sure! If anyone has any ideas for very basic, beginner videos on those subjects, I'd like to hear them. I don't have any weights but might be willing to buy some. I do have a mat. I also found a step with risers at a yard sale and bought it along with a Cathe video, All Step Cross Train Xpress. I tried the video and about died just doing the warm up (between being winded and especially falling all over my two left feet)! I looked at the back and realized it was an advanced video. I'm more of a step beginner, maybe intermediate on a very coordinated day, which isn't often. Anyway, I'm selling it on eBay right so if anyone is interested you can email me or just search on Cathe All Step Cross Train Xpress. The person I bought it from said she really enjoyed it. Guess I should have checked out how in shape she was before I assumed I'd like it too! I ordered a more basic one and should have it tomorrow or Thursday. I'll probably use that for cardio for now. I should mention too that I have rheumatoid arthritis so I'm looking for joint-friendly, more gentle workouts. Thanks for your help!

Welcome to the group and congrats on being a breast cancer survivor.Cathe is excellent, did you order another Cathe one. If so, I'm assuming you got Basic Step or Low Impact Step? If you got one of those workouts, I'm sure you'll like either.

I look forward to getting to know ya.:)DarcyOn 9/12/06, nancydewolf <nancydewolf@...

hi nancy welcome to the group, great job on your walks. its exercise and it seems like you enjoy it in general, which makes you stick with it. cathe is not a great choice to start with but its definetly one you can work up too. for some more beginner/intermediates i would try kathy smith or denise austin, karen voight or even the firm.cathe does have a beginner step dvd and an interemediate step dvd(basic step which also has body fusion,a circuit workout with step and resistance training, and 10 min workouts for upper body, lower body and abs. the intermediate is low impact step circuit, both are more basic choregraphy then her advanced videos). for yoga i am a big big bryan kest power yoga fan. have them all except for the beginner tape. i also enjoy shiva rea's yoga shakti.both are pretty fast paced yoga that helps the heart rate but also builds strength b/c of

the length the poses are held and quickness of sun salutations. but i would also suggest rodney yee and bodywisdommedia's yoga complete for everybody. the latter is a dvd with over 50 practices for all fitness level, time lengths, and purpose(the leg practcies are mymore favorites). pilates i work with caribbean workout pilates b/c they are short add on worokuts, but i also own winsor pilates, denise austin pilates, and karen voight. i have done stott pilates which is more traditional pilates training. great workout but a pretty bland instructor. she teaches great form and breathing but its just a bland feeling. i hope that helps and welcome again kassia

Hi Jen,

Wow, 20 years!! That is so great to hear! Thanks for telling me and congrats to your mom! I live in Michigan too (near Ann Arbor) and that's where I did the 3-Day last year. We walked through the 90+ degree heat and torrential downpour with flash floods in July! Despite that, I still wanted to do it again this year but the training and especially the fundraising was so intense last year that I decided not to do it after all (plus my best friend, who did it with me last year said no way to this year for the same reasons). I might again at some point, it was definitely worth the effort. A lot of people do it alone too and you meet people as you go along the route, plus we met people while we trained and joined them there (we were wearing 3-Day shirts and they struck up a conversation with us) but I can understand not wanting to sign up alone too. Thanks for the welcome!!

Hi Kerry,

Thank you for the welcome and kind words! Congratulations to you too on 14 years of survivorship, I love hearing big numbers like that! Thanks for the idea too, I will look into Lilias. I've never done yoga before but need to stretch and tone as well as build up my endurance and it sounds nice and gentle would be great!

Hi Darcy,

Thanks so much for the welcome and congrats!!

I did not order another Cathe. I looked at her Basic Step and another one but was concerned they might still be too much for me. It doesn't take much for me lose my confidence when it comes to anything involving coordination and choreography and from what I was reading about Cathe on collage video (which I found while searching for beginner videos on google) I figured she'd be one to work up to. At collage, I put in their search engine that I wanted beginner and step and it came up with several options then I plugged those into eBay and found one of them, Kari 's Go: Step Workout for Beginners for less than $15 (including shipping) and ordered it. I figure if it is too basic then I do know some higher intensity moves and arm motions that I can plug in to up the intensity once I'm comfortable. I also got a Sansone video since I'd heard really good things about her (Walk the Walk, Firm Walk which I understand is more toning than walking which is fine, I need that too). I'm also into freecycle and asked if anyone had any beginner videos they didn't want anymore and a lady near me is going through her collection to see what she wanted to get rid of so I should be getting some free soon too. Don't know if they'll be anything I really want but I'm open to trying lots of things and if I don't like them I can freecycle them myself. (Check for freecycle in your area, it is a way of keeping things out of landfills, I offer things we no longer want or need on their all the time and occasionally ask for things we want or need. Everything is 100% free, no bartering or payments at all.)

Thanks again for the note Darcy!

hi nancy! welcome to the group! it is very nice to meet you here.

for beginning yoga, i recommend anything with sarah ivanhoe. she did

some good ones with crunch -- joy of yoga, fat burning yoga, etc...

and also did some good beginning pilates workouts with them too like,

pick your spot pilates, fat burning pilates, etc. go to

collegevideo.com and do a search for sarah ivanhoe and there you can

read all about the workouts and see clips... then buy them somewhere

else cheaper (most of her workouts are widely available at mass

merchandising stores like target, etc). also, her 20 minute yoga

makeover series is pretty good for beginners.

for beginning stepping and toning, cathe friedrich 'basic step/body

fusion' dvd is great.

also tamilee webb's 'i want that body' dvd is a good one too for your

fitness level (and beyond, up to intermediate).

have fun!

:*carolyn.

this is a good one! i like it quite a bit even though im not a

beginner. kari anderson is a very good instructor.

also, there is a crunch step workout called 'fat blaster' with that

really fun man.... kendall hogan.

another good beginner step workout is 'step reebok:the video' which

is an old workout that finally came out on dvd recently.

oh! another good beginner yoga workout with sarah ivanhoe is

'crunch:candlelight yoga'... forgot to mention that one in my last

post. or is that ellen barrett? i get those two women mixed up

sometimes.

for pilates, check out the new 'pick your level pilates' which just

came out (definately with ellen barrett)

Hi , WOW what a small world! I'm surprised that we both live in Michigan. I think we might be the only two in this group that do. Maybe some day we can meet.... I live in Farmington Hills which is about 40 minutes from Detroit. You know about the 40 car accident on 696? Well it was not too far from where I live....I live on 9 mile and that happened near 12 mile road. Yes, my mom is doing well....I was concerned when it came back on her scar but she is doing fine...she used to take tamoxifin but now takes another drug (forgot it's name.) I just got back a couple of weeks ago from a

cruise to Alaska. But maybe after I get caught up on bills I can think about doing the 3-day walk...I've always wanted to do it. How much money do you have to raise? $2,000 or over that? ,

I love the big numbers too! Just goes to show sometimes the Drs. don't know everything. Maybe you could check your library for some yoga workouts to try just so you can get a feel for which instructor you like. I tried doing the Stott pilates, but I just about fell asleep, so that isn't for me.

Let us know what kind of stretch and tone workouts you get. I've had Pure and Simple stretch recommended to me as well as Yoga Focus by Voight, it is also called Yoga Power, Good luck,

Kerry

Hey Jen,

Heard about the accident, ouch. I used to live near you! I grew up in West Bloomfield, off Middlebelt, between Maple (15 mile) and Walnut Lake Road. Now I live in Hamburg Township (very close to Brighton and about 20 minutes from Ann Arbor).

The cancer came back on her scar? Wow, that is scary! I had a scare earlier this year but the lump turned out to just be part of the implant they put in for my reconstruction. I'm on Tamoxifen for another few years but since I haven't hit menopause yet (I was only 37 when I was diagnosed and I'm almost 40 now) I don't think there is anything else for me to take yet... will cross that bridge when I get to it...

Wow, Alaskan cruise, how wonderful!!! You can do the 3-Day cheap if you get donations and have other things you need already. You have to raise $2,100. It is intense for some of us, others just sail through that part. I managed to raise about $2,300 and did not put in any of my own money (which you can do). If you don't have $2,100 by a certain date before the walk you can usually get money from other walkers who have met their quota and still have more donations so that's a good fall back too (because you cannot walk if you don't raise the entire amount, that's the only thing that I don't like about this event). I did have to buy several pairs of shoes and since I wasn't into intense exercise before doing the 3-Day I bought some work out clothes that wick moisture plus a really nice fanny pack that holds 2 big bottles of water and some other assorted smaller items. I figure the only thing I'll probably have to invest in if I do it again are some new shoes so that is at least good. I did end up putting out a few hundred dollars between shoes, clothes and other equipment but I've continued to use everything and the experience alone was well worth it.

Re: New here, suggestions & eBay

Hi , my mom is a 20 year survivor of breast cancer I would LOVE to walk the 3-day here in Michigan (where I live) if I can only find someone to walk it with me..... Maybe some day I can find someone to walk 60 miles with me.

Welcome to the group,

Jen ()

Hi Kerry,

I think I'll try the library next week. That sounds like a good way to try things out. My problem with any workout is that I am really challenged to follow choreography & keep time and I'm hoping that I can at least try the tapes enough before I have to return them to see if they're ones I'd want at home. I need to try any workout many times before I feel confident following along then, when I can, I'm usually a few beats early or late it seems! So many of you sound like you naturally take to the choreography, I can be the voice of the uncoordinated, timing challenged, ungraceful that still like to workout! :-)

Will report back later! :-)

Re: New here, suggestions & eBay

Kerry

Hi Kerry,

Thank you for the welcome and kind words! Congratulations to you too on 14 years of survivorship, I love hearing big numbers like that! Thanks for the idea too, I will look into Lilias. I've never done yoga before but need to stretch and tone as well as build up my endurance and it sounds nice and gentle would be great!

heehee!!! but, honestly, i am certainly not into alot of choreo. i

trip and stumble and end up standing there watching, feeling

frustrated. i dont have the time or patience to try a workout over

and over in an attempt to get the choreo. but i will say that the

more i workout, the more i get used to certain steps and certain

counts and am getting better overall at picking up on things.

someday i will go back and try some of cathe's step workouts that i

gave up on in the past. im hoping that they will come a bit easier

to me now. so, hang in there!

I wouldn't worry about keeping time with the workout especially if it's your first time. I'm still doing the bent leg dead lifts at my own pace with the Ripped workouts. It takes time to learn a workout's steps, quite often I'm off, just don't worry about it, you're still moving and there's always the rewind button if you need it. I'm not too terribly coordinated, I can trip over my own two feet and the step etc. It comes with practice, so just keep trying and you'll get it. Maybe you could find a workout in the library you think you'd like, get your own copy and keep working on that until you've got it down pat, then you'll have the confidence to try other workouts.

Have a great day,

Kerry

Hi and Carolyn,

I recently bought Cathe's Total Cardio Step and thought I'd have

trouble with the moves, but I was surprised, I didn't. The basic step

from what I remember was too easy, but the other two Body Fusion and

Low Impact Step were good. Sometimes I do mess up especially when I

get tired, but I found it not too bad at all.

I agree. I don't have any problem with Cathe's step videos, but if I put a CIA in, I'm usually fusterated and I don't get much of anything for a workout. I don't have the patience to learn the complex choreo ones either. I like to work hard, but I don't like having to think and wrack my brain w/ every step I make.

Kerry,

Thank you so much for the encouragement and sharing your own learning curve with me!! I really appreciate your taking the time to write this, makes me feel like slightly less of a klutz! :-) I think I will have to plan a trip to my library soon too!

Hi Carolyn,

I'm trying to catch up on emails and wanted to say thank you! I have tried the Kari video a few times now and though she went too fast for me at first (adding things on before I felt like I'd gotten one thing down) I've gotten better at it and am now enjoying it. I like my rewind button a lot, it just makes the workout less intense the first few times through but I'm dealing with that, it is still less embarrassing than falling all over myself in a class! Thanks for more ideas too!!!

nancydewolf wrote:> Kari 's Go: Step Workout for Beginners for less than $15 > (including shipping) and ordered it.this is a good one! i like it quite a bit even though im not a beginner. kari anderson is a very good instructor.also, there is a crunch step workout called 'fat blaster' with that really fun man.... kendall hogan.another good beginner step workout is 'step reebok:the video' which is an old workout that finally came out on dvd recently.oh! another good beginner yoga workout with sarah ivanhoe is 'crunch:candlelight yoga'... forgot to mention that one in my last post. or is that ellen barrett? i get those two women mixed up sometimes.for pilates, check out the new 'pick your level pilates' which just came out (definately with ellen barrett):*carolyn.

nancydewolf wrote:>I haven't done many> videos but am interested in trying yoga or pilates and toning> videos especially. hi nancy! welcome to the group! it is very nice to meet you here.for beginning yoga, i recommend anything with sarah ivanhoe. she did some good ones with crunch -- joy of yoga, fat burning yoga, etc... and also did some good beginning pilates workouts with them too like, pick your spot pilates, fat burning pilates, etc. go to collegevideo.com and do a search for sarah ivanhoe and there you can read all about the workouts and see clips... then buy them somewhere else cheaper (most of her workouts are widely available at mass merchandising stores like target, etc). also, her 20 minute yoga makeover series is pretty good for beginners.for beginning stepping and toning, cathe friedrich 'basic step/body fusion' dvd is great.also tamilee webb's 'i want that body' dvd is a good one too for your fitness level (and beyond, up to intermediate).have fun!:*carolyn.
