Guest guest
An ester is the equivalent in organic chemistry of a " salt " . I.e if you neutralise hydrochloric acid (stomach acid) with sodium hydroxide (Lye) you get sodium chloride, common salt. If you neutralise an organic acid with an alcohol you get an ester. E.g. if you neutralise stearic acid (the fatty acid from many natural fats and oils) with cetyl alcohol (the alcohol that once was obtained from whale oil) you get cetyl stearate, an ester. Bob Foulkes Question on a wax What are esters? I know, it is probably a very simple question for some of you. Sorry. Guest guest
Hi , An ester is a product formed by reacting an alcohol with a (normally) organic (as in carbon based, not " organic " as in " chemical free " ) acid. Example : Ethyl alcohol (C2H5OH) + butyric acid (CH3CH2CH2COOH) -> Ethyl Butyrate (CH3CH2CH2C00C2H5) + Water (H2O) The ethyl butrate is an ester. It is the " smell " of pineapples. Ester formation is known as a condensation reaction (you are Condensing - ie removeing - water from the system) Note that, in order to get the reaction to work you need heat and a catalyst and you need to remove the water while the reaction is occuring to " force " the reaction towards the formation of the ester. Pretty simple (really!), but needs a little bit of appropriate glassware. In the US the sort of glassware used will likely result in a visit from the DEA - they can't tell the difference between perfume manufacture and drug manufacture - and a stint trying to tell them that you REALLY WERE only making soap. Regards, Bruce Question on a wax What are esters? I know, it is probably a very simple question for some of you. Sorry. Guest guest
Bruce and Bob, I never took chemistry in high school. Looks like I'm taking it now! Thanks so much for your explanations. I think I'll have to re-read these last two posts about esters, probably about 100 times! Have a great day. Leanna in Alberta.
