this same concept can be accomplished with mod podge and fabric torn in strips

and then adhered to the cast...this will make clean up easier and save your

hands, knees, clothes, etc. from the abrasiveness of the fiberglass

entire cast. Is this right or am I remembering wrong? And if I'm

right, did the nurses do that @ the hospital or did you? Just thinking

it would be nice to have it covered in it to clean it better, but not

if it'll cause any problems w/breathability or what not.

Joy, that might be a better option than the tape...I think it will go on

smoother than the tape.

The nurses did that because it was the waterproof cast. Initially, it was

terrible because where the cast was really snug, it gave him really bad cast

sores - if you get any slight wrinkle in the tape it becomes a huge issue. I

actually put moleskin over the areas that hurt him. But, then the cast got

super loose and that was not an issue and I peeled the moleskin off.

If the cast is super tight, I would be afraid to do it. If it is fairly loose,

then it might be okay.

I just added pics of his waterproof cast to his album. I am going to look for

his 4th cast pics and try to post those as well.

Yeah, hers is super loose, can fit my fingers in on pretty much

every edge so I think I'm going to find some kind of breatheable

fabric type stuff.. luckily it's loose enough there seems be plenty

of circulation through it too, it's strange to think that it's

working & holding w/it being so loose! Just a lot different scenario

for us compared to that first one. Thanks for the info.!

I just looked @ them again, Ian is quite the cutie too! And you

know, the size & thickness between the ALL fiberglass & the

POP+Fiberglass isn't that much different at all. It's nice that

they've figured out how to do them smaller w/the FG on the outside

to hold the mold, some from the past I've seen look a lot thicker,

which are probably all POP I'm assuming? Well I'm glad they're back

on track w/the POP cast for Ian, I don't know if I'd want to even

try the all FG now either, like somebody said (I think HRH?) What's

a year w/out normal bath schedule vs. attaining correction? =)

Actually, his all fiberglass cast was WAY thinner than the plaster/fiberglass.

It was also much lighter. I'd say his cast now probably weighs about 2 lbs and

his waterproof cast was a half pound or less. But, maybe what he is in now is

ALL plaster?? I am not sure now that I think on it.

I just saw this post....Are you guys doing alright? Hows little Ian's skin, and

have you been able to reach Dr. K?

I wish I had advice re: waterproof Jen, but I am unfamiliar. Liv never had one.

Please let us know how you both are doing.

HRH

Major problem with waterproof cast

OMG. I noticed Ian scratching himself like crazy. I looked inside the cast and

the lining is STUCK to his skin! I just emailed Dr. K and an impatiently waiting

to hear back from him. I am freaked out because this is what happened to Joy's

little Solana. I really pray he doesn't tell us to go back up there for a cast

change!

I *think* I got most of it unstuck. I may have gotten it all unstuck, but it is

hard to tell on the sides. His skin was so bad that my husband put cortisone

ointment down the cast...not sure how great of an idea that was, because I can

see where the scaly parts of the skin are building up under the cast. But, it

definitely helped him with the itchiness.

Unfortunately, the docs at Shriners aren't allowed to email with us about

patients anymore due to HIPPA regulations. So, I had to talk to a nurse who

talked to Dr. K. He said normally he'd never recommend sticking something down

the cast, but because of the circumstances that is what he recommended we do to

get the lining peeled away from his skin.

He's a little more comfortable with the ointment being down there, but still a

lot more itchy than normal. We're holding off on making the trek up to Erie.

They said we could go this week, but we just can't do that. His birthday party

is on Saturday and we have out of town guests coming up on Thursday. I am just

hoping he'll be okay.
