I finally got around to posting some, I picked a ton out but down

sized them all so they barely took much room. There's a lot though,

all from the beginning of our casting journey in Nov. of last year up

until now- including our lovely 1st trip to Shriner's & back =)

Take care,

What a precious little girl!!! She looks like she so happy!

I am so sorry that her skin looked like that, WOW! I was really worried

about Evan's the last few days, starting to look like that as well.

Wish we could've met up on our last trip-Maybe next time!

Thanks for sharing.

Hi Joy,

She's such a cutie! On the pics from the second casting, what kind of

tape is at the bottom of the cast? Did the nurses put that on or is that

something you did?

Thanks

Hi Tracey,

Thank you for the thoughts & wishes! She's 20 mos. now. Yeah the

skin medicated wet bandages she was completely fine & happy. I

removed them the next day in the bath tub w/the shower sprayer to

help in case of sticking but none of it stuck and it was all

completely hardened over, I couldn't believe it, and she wasn't in

any discomfort @ all again (after the initial removal of the cast)

which made it easier (even though it LOOKED horrible). Medicated

neosporin & non stick gauze I covered it with for a few days but

then it was fine. But yeah, difintiely not something I'd wish for

anyone! And if it was the tape I used that aided to it I learned my

lesson!

It seems awhile since I've seen you post, how is Lexi doing?

Take care,

Thanks ! I'm glad his was okay too, not fun but glad it's over

with.. we had the worst case scenario the first time around w/the

first cast & the aftermath, this one has been nothing but a breeze

so far, hasn't limited her in any regard 1 bit & yes her hapiness &

contentness is 100% normal too unlike in the first one. Yeah too bad

it didn't work out, maybe sometime. I'm actually looking forward to

going back, getting her new one & results you know! You guys take

care!

Hi , thank you! The nurses put that orange tape on (is that

the tape you're referring to?). I don't think that will be a problem

though with the skin not being able to breathe, especially because

there's no contact w/water in this one. And I think, if I'm not

mistaken, I saw that Ian's last cast was totally covered in that

orange tape & don't think his skin was affected at all, I'd like to

check w/ on that though out of interest, would really make

it easy to keep clean & wiped down if I were able to have it all

covered w/that. Take care!

you know it is amazing how quickly their skin can heal. we were told by dr.

sander's and even lexi's brace guy that we want that skin toughened up a little

at least to handle the stresses the casts and braces put on it. glad to hear she

is doing great.

lexi is blowing and going as usual! her brace is getting great results and i am

happy to be able to take her to the pool everyday. she starts swim lessons next

week and we are excited! unlike her 5 yr old brother who was slow to become a

water baby, lexi has NO fear. she is already jumping off the side and letting us

catch her. she has no problem with putting her face in though and she is

learning how to handle the blowing out part. it is hard to teach that to a 2 yr

old. other than that, i am hoping time in the water helps the back the way i

have heard it can.

take care!

Such fun, so glad you guys are at that point & able to enjoy

swimming w/her again, can't wait! Glad to hear she's doing well.

Just out of curiousity, after getting into a brace how often do they

f/u on her, when do you go back for a check up, & then what do you

know? Will she get one more brace maybe? Just curious what they told

you from here.. And I wish I could remember how many casts she was

in over what ages, I'll see if your pics give that, just curious

what we might expect even though I know every child is different!

well, we see her orthotist every 3-4 weeks for brace checks. he is very

thorough to make sure it is always fitting properly and everything is where it

should be. although, he gave us a 45 min tutorial when she first got it and what

to look for.....he is very particular and likes to see it himself which makes me

happy! when we see him he always does a little exam on her spine. he will show

me where her vertebrae are now able to be felt where they weren't before and we

know from that some of the rotation is coming out of her spine. like i said

before, her compensatory curve is now 0 and her thoracic is about 8 based on

last film a month ago. as for the next brace.....we do not know when that will

be. we planned on doing one last month but the brace she is took care of more

rotation than he expected so the brace we were going to do was postponed. it

would have been made to attack more rotation than just curve. we never expected

so much correction on the rotation from this brace, but we got it along with the

curve correction itself. as for how many more...we don't know that either. like

we have all learned i think....there is no magic way of knowing when/ if they

come off whether or not they will hold. lexi is still very flexible, so we are

in it for a long haul i think. within the next 6 months we have talked about

wearing it only 20 hours a day instead of the 23 now, and monitor very closely

what the curve is doing.

lexi was only in one cast which was done at 22 months and then she had one done

by miss mehta which was a cast, but was removable, so i guess you could count

that as 2. then of course we braced for hand surgery, and are sticking with it

now since the results are positive. still all for casting though!! i will never

disagree with it.

Joy, Ian had no skin issues at all (his skin actually looked better than it did

with the plaster casts & moleskin).

Joy,

I finally got to look through your photos. Solana is a doll! She looks a lot

like you (and her big sister as well).

I wanted to cry when I saw her skin breakdown from the first cast. Poor baby.

I hope you have better luck this time.

I should have taped the top of the shirt down like you did! Maybe I still will.

He threw up and and went down his neck and now I have a brown shirt. Luckily,

it seemed to absorb the stink. Hmmm...I may tape those straps down when he

comes home (he is in PA with visiting his grandma this weekend).

Anyway, it was nice to finally put some faces with names!!

Joy,

Your daughters are adorable. Great pics. We had similar breakdown of the skin

after the first cast, but around her hips/tummy. Let me know how the taped

shirt goes, I'm thinking of doing the same for Marissa, gives her shoulders a

break, wouldn't look so much like a boxer, haha.

Take care,

Thank you Jerry! That's too bad marissa had bad breakdown too, were

the able to recast her immediately the following day? I would hate

for it to happen again & have to stay longer than expected, I

thought about having it done here again before we go for that reason

(of being able to view her skin first) but have since figured it

would probably be better to stick to the true idea of less than a 24

hr. time period between casts. Did they use the undershirt on

Marissa in her last cast? I'm wondering if that might aid to the

prevention of that? So far having the shirt taped has been great, I

think she's cooler too & probably feels more free you know, plus

it's out of the way of shirts or tanks you know. I'm able to clean

the tummy hole just fine w/a wet wash cloth. And the shirts holding

great w/the tape, I used that breathable waterproof that they gave

me around her hip/potty area and tucked it over & under so I can

always wipe that part down when changing her (which prevent urine

smell or what not... so far). Luckily haven't noticed any break down

or red spots either.. we still have a month to go though. Take care!

Thank you ! She is quite the sweet heart! But aren't they

all?!!

And awe, I know, was very sad. I was so shocked on the initial

removal having to basically peel it off, was horrible, after the

shock I was holding tears back & wiping them too, while trying to be

stong for her. It was hard though, just glad it's over with &

hopefully won't have to deal w/it again, thanks for the wishes! She

hasn't had anymore breathing issues either, I know it was the cast,

the pain underneath, probably poor circulation, frustration from

both, uncomfortable etc.. I'm sure of it. She's been so happy &

content in this like it's no different from not having it, I'm so

greatful!

Yeah, it's amazing how stretchy that thing is, I stretched it quite

a bit an actually trimmed quite a bit off before taping it, and now

it's nice & comfortably snug on her. Maybe you can end up trimming

the brown part off too? I did that w/some of the diaper area part

that got dirty. And yeah it's nice to have the straps out of the way

you know, can wipe her neck & chest area well, wear certain shirts &

tanks w/out it being in the way.

Hope all is well w/you guys & Ian, enjoy your time off!! =)

Take care,

Joy

Oh, I am definitely cutting the straps when he gets home. Luckily, that is the

only part that got soiled. I have the bottom taped up already, but never

thought about cutting the straps. He will look a lot better in tank tops too if

I cut those straps. Thanks for the idea :).
