Statins update on Pre-existing neuromuscular disorders

If you're taking cholesterol-lowering drugs termed " statins " , pay

attention to current information that directly relates to those of us

with CMT.

Medications such as: Lipitor (atorvastatin), Zocor (simvastatin),

Mevacor (lovastatin), Lescol and Lescol XL (fluvastatin), Pravachol

(pravastatin) and Crestor (rosuvastatin)are prescribed to help lower

or maintain cholesterol levels.

Although effective, apparently patients who have pre-existing medical

conditions could be at a greater risk of developing or experiencing

an increase in their existing muscle-related problems. Serious muscle

damage can occur.

As a result of this discovery manufacturers have been asked to

include a warning and description of this risk in the safety

information sheet for each drug. Tell your doctor if you:

other medications, including natural or prescription; have a family

history of muscular disorders; had any past problems with muscles

pain after using a statin; have kidney or liver problems; have

diabetes; have undergone surgery or other tissue injury; do excessive

physical exercise.

Contact your doctor physician immediiately if you have any of the

following while on statin therapy: muscle pain they cannot explain;
