Guest guest
i noticed when lexi was in her cast, the petaling also came undone ( mainly where she was picked up and areas that rubbed more on things) i used tape all over her petals to reinforce them. i used the clear tape they gave us for awhile, but it didn't seem to do anything and then at one point i actually did use duct tape. it too will eventually start coming loose, but we just removed it and reapplied as needed. i think in the 3 months she was casted, we probably re petaled and retpaed at least twice before i decorated her cast for halloween then that wasn't an issue. good luck!!! and happy to hear there have been no more blow outs!! tracey petal problem Hi All, I am so glad that everyone is having such good results with their treatments, it’s so great to hear about success stories. Alison is going on 3 weeks in her first cast and other than the occasional tumble, (do they make padded helmets for this <grin>??) she’s doing great. She loves to cruise around furniture and walls but avoids crawling because she can’t get her arms under her and ends up looking like a bulldog and then flopping on the floor. We haven’t had anymore diaper blowouts since that first day home, Thanks Goodness! I got the call yesterday from Shriner’s that we are scheduled to be back for cast #2 on July 24th. Now that is almost 4 months and that length of time concerned me so I called the PA, Mike Pond and he said that they grow longer at this age instead of bigger around so she should be fine going four months. In the last couple of days we’ve had a problem with the petals coming unstuck. Maybe it’s the warmer weather or something, I re-petaled some of the spots but they aren’t holding either. Should I just duct tape them or is there a better solution to this? She was originally petaled with the new latex-free white moleskin (WHITE….what were they thinking????) The biggest problem area is on her sides where she’d picked up. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks ( & Alison 10.5 mos)

Maybe I can find something complimentary to neon pink…. Guest guest
, If you're going to use duct tape, let me know, we manufacture it and have it in a host of colors, neon, etc. I have a garage full of samples. I'd be more than happy to send some to you. Guest guest
It must be the new type of moleskin that is making it come unstuck. Did they give you extras to take home with you? If so, I would repetal them. Otherwise, I would try taping the edges down that are coming off. Actually, there were a few people that had helmets made for their kiddos. I considered it, but then after 2 1/2 weeks Ian adjusted well and didn't fall anymore. I think H has info if you really want a helmet made. Guest guest
Hi , I would think 4 months is a very long time. I'm sure it will be too tight, not to mention very stinky and dirty by then (especially since it will be mid summer!). I understood the standard protocal was 2 months if the child is 2 and under, and 3 months if the child was 2 and over. 4 months sounds so long to me. At least that is the protocal in Erie. Maybe you should call the doc and tell him your discomfort witht that length of time. Also, maybe Alison could have a follow up appt. just to check it's tightness at around 8 weeks? Glad to hear she is adjusting well and cruising furniture. And actually, yes, some kids with this cast on do have a soft helmet for those hard falls. I can't remember who, but I'm sure someone can give you the info. if you are seriously interested. Regarding the moleskin, yes, after a while Cole's starts to curl too. Erie actually puts a tape over it too hold it down, but I bet duct tape would work great. Well good to hear how things are going. Let us know about that 4 months thing. That sounds LONG! Guest guest
Ditto what said about 4 months. Ian gets his changed every 8 weeks and will go to 12 weeks when he turns 2 (which is only 4 months away!). Guest guest
I also agree that 4 months is too long for a baby her age. My Evanlee is 10.5 months and she barely lasts 2 months in a cast. She just had her 3rd one removed a few days ago and it was 2 months and 4 days exactly, they were hoping for 3 months since she would be going into a brace for summer. She started getting raw spots on her upper tush and the belly whole was way too tight on her so they had to go ahead and remove it. I'm not sure about the only growing longer at this point because mine are gradually eating more and more table food and I think they are growing everywhere, which is why I think she didn't last any longer than 2 months in her last cast. By the way, Evanlee got her brace yesterday. She is too cute with the butterflies all over it. The funny part is her twin sister keeps trying to pick the butterflies off (hehehehehe). Good luck to you and Alison. "Deshea L. Guest guest
Hi - The 4 month cast...Madison did one once, she was 15 months when it was applied. She did fine in it; however, we did up cutting the shirt off because it was just too filthy. As for the petals, I always decorated Madison's cast. I decopauged (sp?) fabric over her entire cast. This not only kept the mole skin on, but also saved my hands from that rough fiberglass. It also made cleaning up spills, drool, etc. on the cast so much easier. If you look at the ISOP home page, Olivia and Madison are on the banner and you can see what I mean about the cast being decorated. Ironically enough, it was Easter time then. Hope this helps you out, let me know if you have any more questions. Best wishes, Jen http://infantilescoliosis.org/ <urbanmattandrea@...> wrote: Hi All, I am so glad that everyone is having such good results with their treatments, it’s so great to hear about success stories. Guest guest
, My daughter Lily is in her third cast and the last two have been on about 3 1/2 months each. She just turned 2 yeaterday. I think having them on that long can be good. We took her out of her first cast to soon I believe. It was only on for eight weeks but it was holding her at eight degrees from the 46 she was at. The second cast was not as good and only help her at 14 degrees. I wish we would have kept the first on longer. I believe the doctors can have good days and bad with the cast applications and just not get as good of correction sometimes. I don't think that having the cast on that long is necessarily bad unless they get to big for it or something. Just my two cents!!! Guest guest
Hi All, I think I’ll call around 8-10 weeks and see if we can get in for a check to make sure she’s doing ok. Mike Pond did say that since one of their anesthesiologists was killed a month or so ago, scheduling has been tricky because he they haven’t been able to replace him yet. So they are down to only 3 of them. I’ll try the duct tape for the petals and see how that goes. Thanks for the advice. Tracey <pthahn@...> wrote: i noticed when lexi was in her cast, the petaling also came undone ( mainly where she was picked up and areas that rubbed more on things) i used tape all over her petals to reinforce them. i used the clear tape they gave us for awhile, but it didn't seem to do anything and then at one point i actually did use duct tape. it too will eventually start coming loose, but we just removed it and reapplied as needed. i think in the 3 months she was casted, we probably re petaled and retpaed at least twice before i decorated her cast for halloween then that wasn't an issue. good luck!!! and happy to hear there have been no more blow outs!! tracey petal problem Hi All, I am so glad that everyone is having such good results with their treatments, it’s so great to hear about success stories. Thanks ( & Alison 10.5 mos) Blab-away for as little as 1¢/min. Guest guest
well, there is a pic in lexi's folder in the group. i used the tacky glue to adhere the pieces of material and the 3-d stickers then went over it all with mod podge to hold it all. it actually held up pretty well. i will attach the pics on this email so you don't have to go search for it tracey petal problem Hi All, I am so glad that everyone is having such good results with their treatments, it’s so great to hear about success stories. Guest guest
I DO want to decorate it, please send the list and instructions, and then I’ll send a picture when it’s done. Thanks From: infantile scoliosis treatment [mailto:infantile scoliosis treatment ] On Behalf Of heather hyatt Sent: Monday, April 17, 2006 7:27 AM infantile scoliosis treatment Subject: Fw: petal problem Re: petal problem Hi - The 4 month cast...Madison did one once, she was 15 months when it was applied. Guest guest
Good idea. Thanks! I would've never thought to do that, I would've been afraid it wouldn't hold up or would irritate him in some way!
