Evan has a cough a few times a day and that is it, I would assume that he's ok, I'm supposed to call on Monday if he's running a temp or sick by then to re-schedule. I'm just praying he stays well until we get him casted and then can avoid getting sick again all togther. I was just wanting your thoughts and experiences with any coughs or slight congestion and casting. Thanks you all. Evan 8/7/05 Relax. virus scanning helps detect nasty viruses! Bring photos to life! Guest guest
Hey everyone- We just got home about an hour ago and are dead tired- 8hrs is a pretty long trip!! We went in this AM (Tuesday) at 6:30 and I'm sure you all know the procedure- you meet the nurses, go over paperwork, they take you down to the OR, you meet with another nurse, the anesthesiologist, Dr. came in and then they take your little one away! =( Dr. came out after around 45 mins and showed us the before x-ray and the in cast x-ray and he was pleased with the correction made- My husband and I can't remember the exact number and the nurses said it wasn't in his chart yet, but we know that he started at 44-46 degrees and it was down to somewhere b/t 21-26 degrees in the cast with his beginning RVAD at 36 and in the cast it was at 18- so I feel pretty good about that. Dr. thought everything looked good and answered all our questions as did the wonderful nurses. We were a little overwhelmed and kind of "knew" what to expect, but really didn't, if you know what I mean?! We decided to make the trip on home after talking to the charge nurses and she said there was no reason to stay and that after they discharged him, the wouldn't be checking him out again or examining him, so we decided with the snow rolling in, we might as well go and left around 4. Overall, I feel pretty good about everything, the diapering is a challenge and I'm so afraid he'll leak in the carseat or while sleeping, but I'll just have to learn, I'm doing the diaper lined with the maxipad and then tuck it up under the cast (which I hate to do already!) and then I've been putting a pullup over it to hold it in place and it seems ok so far. The shirt underneath is already starting to pick and tear some- You all warned me!! One question (brace yourself-I've prob. got tons in the next few days!)- have they always put the fiberglass over the POP cast?We didn't really expect that?! Thanks for your well wishes and prayers, they were certainly felt. My little man was a real trooper and didn't cry except when coming out of the anesthesia, I was so proud of him. and Evan Claflin <noellesmommy@...> wrote: I am thinking of you guys too! Guest guest
It's so good to hear from you! I am glad it went well and you were brave to drive home the same day! That's definitely a long couple of days for sure. Sounds like you got some good correction which is wonderful! Ian's first cast did not have fiberglass, but the one he is in now does. It makes the cast thinner...I notice his clothes stay on a lot better with this cast. Anyway, glad it all went well and I am sure he will adjust to the cast quickly! Guest guest
Congratulations on good correction! It's all so emotionally draining on the entire family, isn't it? It does make it easier to handle when you factor in all the positives. I like the newer/thinner cast. In Jake's 1st one he was getting lots of questioning looks as it was so bulky. Now you can hardly tell he is wearing one except when he wears a white t-shirt and you see the neon green shining through :-) !!! As for diapering, I guess you just get used to it. We do the tuck technique also, and even with my long skinny fingers it is difficult to get it just right. Yes, we've had a few accidents as well, but really what can you do? Grin and bear it. I cannot wait for the next cast change to get rid of that dirty, stinky undershirt! Pee-ewwww! You made it over the first hurdle-way to go! mom to and Jake <basketsnboyds@...> wrote: Hey everyone- We just got home about an hour ago and are dead tired- 8hrs is a pretty long trip!! Guest guest
Thanks for the encouragement. The diaper thing is actually ok and seems to be working so far. I think he seems uncomfortable and that's hard for me and what's even harder is the fact that it's impossible with the way the cast is to sit up at all on the floor, it pushes down into his diaper area and makes it impossible. He can't roll anymore either, but I think he'll get that. One question for you all. How do you check for the pressure sores? The cast is so tight and even when you get a flashlight and try to look up or under it, I can't see anything?Any tips? He seems so uncomfortable at times, but at others, I just am amazed at how well he's doing and taking it all so wonderfully. Thanks you all and Evan Viveiros <jviv314@...> wrote: Congratulations on good correction! It's all so emotionally draining on the entire family, isn't it? Guest guest
I can't check for pressure sores at all now that he has the shirt on. Before the shirt, I always checked when he was laying down. I could press on his abdomen and be able to get a peek in there. Also, Ian STILL can't sit on the floor with his cast...this one has actually been harder for him in terms of sitting and other motor skills than the first one, but I think it is because they didn't trim it nearly enough. Guest guest
Evanlee wasn't able to sit or do much rolling until her 3rd cast. We were told that since it was her 3rd they were able to trim more for her. She now is able to sit up by herself, play with her toes again (my personal fav.) and roll everywhere. She still looks like a turtle on her belly when she tries to crawl. But even though she was delayed in being able to achieve these goals it seems we were even MORE excited and proud of her when she finally got it. I think it helps that she watches her twin and wants to do everything she does. I do still keep a boppy pillow around her when she sits just because she isn't able yet to catch herself or turn herself when her sister pushes on her and I'm afraid of her hitting the back of her head on the floor. She does have the advantage over her sister though that she can't feel her sister hitting her belly or now wanting to crawl over top of her belly. , mom of Evanlee & is (9 months) Claflin <noellesmommy@...> wrote: I can't check for pressure sores at all now that he has the shirt on. Guest guest
Jake can and does sit on the floor in his cast. He didn't get it trimmed as well as the first one - diapering is troublesome because cast is much lower and tighter on the hips/pelvis than before, and his poor armpits are rubbed raw. The diapering I can handle, but I will definitely make sure the underarms are trimmed down further. I will say that he can now verbalize quite a bit, and he lets me know nearly every night that "tummy hurts" and "tight". Breaks my heart. mom to and Jake Claflin <noellesmommy@...> wrote: I can't check for pressure sores at all now that he has the shirt on. Before the shirt, I always checked when he was laying down. That is awesome that he can tell you what hurts, but on the other hand knowing that would break my heart!!! I am going to ask Dr. K if he thinks Ian needs PT. Seems like he should have figured out sitting on the floor by now. I dunno....perhaps it is just too uncomfortable for him. Guest guest
If you don't mind me asking-would you mind telling me again when Evanlee had her first cast? Evan is 7mos old now--- How close is she to correction now? Did you notice that she was more uncomforable at first until she learned to adapt the way she did things? He seems to be doing wonderfully, but it seems that it hurts him at times. He actually rolled one way last night, but I"m not sure if that was a fluke or not! Did you have problems with her head flattening where she laid on her back a lot or how did you manage that? I put him in his saucer thing and he sits in his swing and plays on the floor but I worry about his head getting flatter than it is now, they've already mentioned a helmet b/c of his torticollis and the flattening that he already had. Bathtime- do you have any tips? I just put him on the counter on a sponge mat and gave him a spongebath, but I was so afraid that I'd get water on the cast esp. when I washed his hair and neck. Lastly and I'm so sorry I'm asking so much, but did she have alot of irritation under her arms where the cast rubbed her there? Any tips from anyone would be so appreciated. It seems the tape that's holding the moleskin on is irritating him and I tried a diff kind, but it just might be the tightness of the cast. Again, I"m so sorry to ramble, but I have so many questions. and EvanJim & Abercrombie <dalerocks08@...> wrote: Evanlee wasn't able to sit or do much rolling until her 3rd cast. Guest guest
What do you do for the armpits, thats exactly what are doing? You're lucky he can sit in his, Evan wants to so badly and needs to so badly b/c of his head. I agree with the diapering, it is so tight on his hips/pelvis as well. Guest guest
Evan's actually comes down not to a point but almost and prevents him from sitting. They said they couldn't trim anymore b/c it would be too thin b/t that point and the hole that's cut out in the tummy area. Also, under his chin, the cast comes up so high that he can't turn his head b/c his little chin is so fat. That's going to be a big prob. with his torticollis as well. Guest guest
i thought i would jump in and say that lucas has always had issues with his armpits with every cast (and i believe that this is his 7th? -- i've lost track). it's always one side more than the other. i wash them every night with a gentle soap, and lately i've been trying some calendula gel which is something that miss mehta recommended when the casts are taken off to put on any red spots after that first bath. lucas' armpits are red on both sides, but on one, there were some pen tip size blisters which i put the gel on, and they are slowly getting better. lucas never complains about his armpits so i just assume that even though they are red, they don't bother him. oh, one more thing -- with the shirt, i like to pull it up and out and try to protect his armpits more. the shirt always seems to fall down throughout the day. sometimes replacing the petals under the armpits help with the irritation as well. that's my 2 cents! deshea ---- Original message ---- >Date: Thu, 16 Mar 2006 06:39:07 -0800 (PST) >From: <basketsnboyds@...> >Subject: Re: Evan & in Erie Today >infantile scoliosis treatment > > Evan's actually comes down not to a point but almost > and prevents him from sitting. Guest guest
Evanlee started in her first cast at 4 months old, she is now 9 months in her 3rd cast and her curve is down to less than 5 in cast. She will be going into a brace after this one for spring and summer (can't wait for that). Lucky for me she is the laid back, easy going twin, so she adjusted very well and very quickly. Had it been the other one which is very active I think we all would have gone crazy. In the first cast she spent alot of time in a beanbag chair and didn't have any flattening of the head. As far as bathtime, I would still love to hear some tips. Especially now that we have been dealing with the stomach flu (vomiting & diahrea). I have changed all the moleskin at the bottom of her cast 4 times in 2 days now (I hope we are almost over this). She is also wearing a bib all day so vomit doesn't go down inside her cast. So needless to say she has had several baths. All I have found to do is to hold her like a football and run her head under the faucet, then I just wash the parts I can. You know when my son broke his arm we purchased a vinyl cover that protected it from getting wet, we were going on vacation to the dells, waterpark, waterpark, waterpark. Anyway it worked perfectly. It's a shame they can't make something similiar for these casts, especially the ones under the arms. She hasn't had any irritations, other than the shoulder straps on her first cast rubbed and bent her ears till they cut them off. She did develop a cough after her 2nd and 3rd cast that would not clear up till she was given a week of steroids. Otherwise we have pretty much had smooth sailing. , mom of Evanlee & is (9 months) <basketsnboyds@...> wrote: If you don't mind me asking-would you mind telling me again when Evanlee had her first cast? My 2 year old daughter wouldn't have handled it as well either. I do appreciate all the tips so much. One more question, how oftern did they change her casts? I keep a bib on him at all times now as well- he drools so much and I know the cast can't get wet! and EvanJim & Abercrombie <dalerocks08@...> wrote: Evanlee started in her first cast at 4 months old, she is now 9 months in her 3rd cast and her curve is down to less than 5 in cast. Guest guest
Ok , quick question. Are you guys from Wisconsin? I know the Dells well and yes waterpark and waterparks and more waterparks. Lol. Betty PS. Loved how you wrote this: “She hasn't had any irritations, other than the shoulder straps on her first cast rubbed and bent her ears till they cut them off.” Any one else reading this who doesn’t know about the casts would think her ears were cut off. Lol PSS. Sorry about this, should have all of my mail before I replied to ya. Lol. Sometimes I get ahead of myself.
Guest guest
For washing hair, I lay Ian down on the counter top and lean his head over the sink. I use the spray nozzle to rinse the soap out. It works great. Guest guest
LOL you are right I should clarify (don't want to give the docs a bad rap), THEY CUT HER SHOULDER STRAPS OFF HER CAST-not her ears off. Sorry I can't stop laughing at myself for that one. , mom of Evanlee & is (9months)Betty Hicks <missbetty37@...> wrote: Ok , quick question. Are you guys from Wisconsin? Guest guest
Every time I read that, I bust out laughing. My roommate has looked at me weird cause of that. We can’t always be serious, if we were, we would be very dull. Betty
Guest guest
This is how I wash Jake's hair, too. He still screams like a banshee, and I cannot wash his hair fast enough. Guest guest
LOL, this is why Ian has a buzz cut...less hair, less soap to wash out, hehehehe. He HATES it too. Guest guest
Cole likes to splash his feet in the sink too. That is the highlight of his bathtime. This last week we were on vacation. My husband took Lily and Jack in the hottub and Cole just watched as they had fun. I felt so guilty. I finally wrapped him in a towel (hips up), and sat him on the edge with his feet in the hot tub. He had so much fun. He splashed and laughed for all it was worth! We were both drenched by the time it was over, but it was worth it for his fun. Luckily the towel kept his cast dry, but it was pretty wet. Anyways, bathtime is a challenge, I agree, but splashing his feet makes it a little better. and Cole Viveiros <jviv314@...> wrote: This is how I wash Jake's hair, too.
