Guest guest
You sound so positive and help put things in perspective. I find lately I have been rationalizing that it isn't so bad. Thankfully she doesn't have a life threatening disease. I think you are probably right about summer's dr being really cautious with her meds. She is his youngest patient and he has told me he wants to treat her conservatively. I am going to give it to the end of Jan and if things seem the the same or unchanged i am going to book a another appt. prior to our monthly one. What are the side effects with Luvox? Has anyone used this one with good results? big Hugs Teela _______________________________________________________
Guest guest
Hi Teela, I am positive primarily because I have been through what you are going through now, and come out the other side with my daughter intact. Deciding to treat OCD with meds in a small child is scary and a big decision, no question. Conservative med treatment is fine so long as Summer finds relief at low doses, but if not you may want to encourage her doctor to consider raising her dose. We changed docs because Kel's first was only comfortable prescribing Prozac, he'd had the most experience with this SSRI in young kids, but for Kel this med was a disaster. OCD is not life-threatening in the conventional sense, but it can be linked to depression which certainly is. It also threatens quality of life and can interfere with almost anything we humans consider important, necessary and desireable in our life. It's a burden on anyone, but when a young child is saddled with it, it can affect normal social development, interfere with schooling and so on, all things that can have lifelong effects. You are truly doing the right thing to explore every avenue to provide your daughter relief. And as I always say, E & RP does as much or more than the meds to reduce OCD symptoms. Kellen took Luvox for about 10 months with good results. She had very few side-effects on this med but it made her tired, which she never acclimated to. This was the reason she was switched again to the Zoloft she currently takes. Of course Summer's experience on this med may be different, it is truly a curse IMO that finding the right SSRI and the right dose is trial and error. Having decided to treat my daughter with an SSRI, I wanted immediate confirmation I had made the right choice! Guest guest
I am definately going to start pushing for better results with summer's dr. then. I really think her life will be better. I want the same things for summer that all parents want for their children and if it takes meds then so be it. You inspire me when you say that you have survived with your child intact! I really like that phrase. Hugs Teela _______________________________________________________
Guest guest
HI Teela: Steve is also on Luvox, I think he is on 150 mg right now. THis dosage is to treat his depression. He gets quite sleepy on Luvox. We tried to up him to a more effective dosage for OCD but he complained that he felt stupid. We noticed his OCD symptoms were less at the higher dosage. It seems he prefers to do self-ER & P around more symptoms and stay on a lower dosage. Every child responds differently to meds. Starting low and going slow is the best thing we have learned about meds. ALso check out the internet for information on common and less common side effects. Jule also recommends Dr. Wilens book on kids' medications. I have learned a lot about meds from subscribing to our mother list the OCD-L where Dr. Jenike answer medication questions regularly. Good luck, take care, aloha, Kathy (h) kathyh@... At 08:18 PM 01/14/2001 -0500, you wrote: >You sound so positive and help put things in >perspective. Guest guest
I am a little concerned about the sleepiness I am hearing about Luvox. Summer's dr wants to keep her on Trazadone at night and Luvox for the daytime. I seems she is already so emotional and not sleeping well as it is the last thing she needs is to feel even groggier. I will talk to him about it. Hugs Teela _______________________________________________________
Guest guest
Teela, I'm feeling the same way. just went back on Luvox and at only 50 mg she is already complaining of the grogginess. And to top it all off, her psychiatrist had to cancel all appointments for 3 weeks due to unexpected back surgery. I guess this will force her to try to hang in there and see if the side effects wear off. In the meantime, she starts with her new therapist tomorrow. My greater hope is that through effective ER & P, maybe she won't need the Luvox at all. The Wellbutrin and Zyprexa, along with additional support from her dad and I seem to have been working pretty well. Good luck. Guest guest
Hi Teela, this is Nikki in Orlando, I wanted to let you know that Luvox did not cause sleepiness in . Just the opposite, she had bad insomnia. So goes to show you that everybody responds differently. Best wishes, Nikki
Guest guest
Hi Teela: Each child reacts differently to the SSRI's. My & yr. old has taken Prozac, Paxil (2 days only due to an extreme hyperactivity side effect) and Celexa (for 6 weeks as it did nothing at all for his symptoms). Although this is really scary territory, Summer may not have a groggy reaction. I think that Luvox is the only SSRI that has FDA approval for use in young children. Zoloft may be close to being approved, but I know that Luvox definitely does, which could be why your Dr. chose this one for Summer. Hang in there! --- Teela Blue <teelablue@...> wrote: > I am a little concerned about the sleepiness I am > hearing about Luvox.
