Guest guest
Hooray for Cole being cast-free for a few days! I'm sure he loves it, and you do too! Hopefully his curve will hold steady. Try not to worry too much. I hopethat's correct. His back looks great, and hopefully will look great in6 days from now. We are hoping to get it the single digits with thisnext cast. I guess we'll see next Wednesday.Like said, they are trying out these new waterproof casts! They are very thin and are supposed to work great. They makeimprovements everytime Cole gets a new cast on. I think Cole is enjoying cast free days. He is moving in directionsand ways he hasn't been able to do in his cast. He seemed to be insuch a good mood since the cast was removed. Guest guest
I hope he enjoys his cast-free week! How nice for him and I hope the skin heals up quickly. Guest guest
Awe, I can feel for you , I was worried w/Sol having her cast off for too long too not only b/c of possible curve progression but also having her get used to not having one & then getting one again! But I'm sure he's enjoying it like crazy, just hold him tight like crazy you know & enjoy it.. the best part of this is that true, I'm sure he won't progress in the short time if he's been holding well, but also the fact that the new cast is going to be fiberglass... seriously, the weight & thickness is like nothing, judging from the pics I can see how it would make a world of difference in a toddler's mobility.. so though he'll be a little stiff as with any cast, atleast it won't be as heavy and bulky & he'll be able to splash & play more freely in the water which lord knows is a toddler favorite past time!!! PS- i didn't notice the date of this post but will check, if there's time you might inquire on the Gortex liner too if you're interested & they're willing, makes it easier for you but most importantly seems to be a great, COMFORTABLE, water-proofing way for the kids.. Take care =) -Joy > Well, we arrived at Shriner's arround 4pm, and took Cole's cast off. > When we took it off, he had some pretty bad skin irritation around his > waist and hips, so it was decided to let his skin heel, and come back > in 6 days to get the waterproof cast put on at that time. Guest guest
The padding getting wet & then moldy hasn't happened at all, it's a completely smooth surface & you should really seal it off w/water proof tape.. and you can blow dry or use powder to dry it inside.. i guess i can see if i can take some pics of hers if your guys are interested at all. I think if they're able to let you try it out then you'd see why I like it. It's very comfortable & easy to keep clean. Thank you so much for the acitivty input , I'll be looking into it!! Guest guest
How do you get water proof tape to cover the entire inside of the cast? I think I would really have to see what they put on the inside of your cast to understand it really. If you can post a picture, that would be great...or even just email me one. We were told to never put powder or any type of lotion down into the cast since it causes the skin to not be able to breathe and can cause breakdown of the skin. In any case, the nurse from Shriners just happened to call and she told me to put moleskin on the areas that are hurting him. It comes off really easily, so I think I will just do that and put new ones on once I give him a bath. Guest guest
The water proof tape isn't covering the entire inside, one end is tucked up under the edge (over the moleskin) and attatched to the gortex. Brought back up over the moleskin @ attatched to cast. I was told not to put anything down the cast either but the edges where I can slip my hand in where I feel moisture I can lightly coat my hand in powder & slide it around to absorb the moisture, the nurses said they do that to (aside from what the Dr. said.) Anyway, I guess it's difficult to explain through e-mail. We haven't had any problems w/skin breakdown or irritation - at all. (Aside from the leg that's too tight). I'll see if I can get some pics soon. Hope you can make it padded enough for him & it works out. Take care. -Joy Claflin <noellesmommy@...> wrote: How do you get water proof tape to cover the entire inside of the cast? Guest guest
Okay, that sounds very similar to the way they normally petal the casts in Erie. Were they able to get the tape on perfectly smooth...that seemed very difficult for them to do. I'm sure as they do more like this they will figure out a better system. Guest guest
Oh I'M the one eho did all the taping little bits at a time, chased her around a little some of the time or let her focus on a movie or einstein video =) I was able to get it all smooth yes, it's totally smooth, not irritating at all.. just makes is SO much easy to keep her clean you know, can wipe it down so easy! I tried the plastic shiny kind first and then tried the soft sily looking kind another time, the plastic glossy kind workd best b/c is sticks great & easy to wipe down. I'll really try to send some pics, or even get some up.. I don't have any reason for not having some up other than time you know! so we'll see.. take care! =D > > > Well, we arrived at Shriner's arround 4pm, and took Cole's > cast > > off. > > > When we took it off, he had some pretty bad skin irritation > around > > his > > > waist and hips, so it was decided to let his skin heel, and > come > > back > > > in 6 days to get the waterproof cast put on at that time. Guest guest
You are brave to tape it yourself! I wouldn't even attempt it, lol! Guest guest
Yeah =D She didn't like it much of course but I would stick on the outside where I wanted it & stretch it over & underneath, getting it under is what was tricky & she didn't like.. I want to say too Jenn, and this doesn't show in any pic I can send you b/c she's petaled & taped. But After they were done (before trimming) the GORTEX padding/liner is sticking out all edges, everywhere, along EVERY edge, THIS is what pads the cast from cutting the skin... So they trim the gortex padding down until it's sticking out just about a centimeter you know... so it's able to pad between the casts edge & the skin, then the moleskin starts from underneath, & stretches over while folding the gortex padding/liner over with it & keeping the edges extremely padded. (if you can picture that) not only is is a comfortable, padded, waterproof liner, but it's also key in padding the edges (I believe) so that you're not going through what you're going through w/Ian right now. I hope they can get the material & try it out, I'll be glad to be the guinea pig w/it too biding they can get maximum correction still. The material she has now going under her arm to her waist would be the ideal cast for me - in consideration for her & the absolute best, most comfortable, least cumbersome option available... as long as the correction is being achieved at the same time of course!! Anyway, just want to give you (and everybody else who hasn't seen it before) a better idea of what I'm talking about. Take care, Joy > > > > Well, we arrived at Shriner's arround 4pm, and > took Cole's > > cast > > > off. > > > > When we took it off, he had some pretty bad skin > irritation > > around > > > his > > > > waist and hips, so it was decided to let his skin > heel, and > > come > > > back > > > > in 6 days to get the waterproof cast put on at that > time. Guest guest
Hi & , When doing a search on Gortex lining I found some info. that might explain better what I'm talking about.. " A Gortex cast liner can be ordered for the child undergoing an non- urgent casting procedure. Gortex is a material that does not absorb water. The liner is placed against the child's skin and the cotton padding is placed over it. The liner effectively blocks moisture from reaching the cotton. With a Gortex liner, a wet cloth or wipe can be used under the cast to help with cleaning. The liner is an extra expense that is not covered by insurance, but the convenience in cast care & comfort to the child is often worth it. " Now, there it says it's an extra cost so I can understand if Shriner's can't absorb it, I'd be willing to but it myself though. Some other things I found... - gortex liner allows the child and the cast to be washed; - gortex soft wrap is preferable to cotton wrap (gortex can be cleaned if it gets soiled, & the level of comfort to child is higher); This is a comment I found from an ADULT on a forum site... This is a comment I found from an adult in a forum when doing a search on Gortex - " When you DO get in a cast, INSIST on a GORTEX liner. That way you CAN get it wet, I.E. Showers and/or swim at the lake of your choice. I've had casts without the Gortex & they sucked compared to when I broke my ankle back in '95... GORTEX is the way to go, BY FAR more comfortable too. " He's totally talking it up there, funny, but kind of also explains better why I like it so much. Also, , in reference to your concern w/it getting moldy, etc.. Here is an actual site on the Gortex material, it explains how mold/moisture is not something you have to worry about when using the material... if it were then I don't think Dr.'s would be using it. http://www.castliner.com/ Take care, ~Joy > > Well, we arrived at Shriner's arround 4pm, and took Cole's cast > off. > > When we took it off, he had some pretty bad skin irritation around > his > > waist and hips, so it was decided to let his skin heel, and come > back > > in 6 days to get the waterproof cast put on at that time. Guest guest
Thanks Joy,Very informative. We are headed to Erie in a about 5 minutes, so I am anxious to ask to docs if gortex is what they are using. If not, I am going to ask for it in the furture. I'd also pay the extra. I'll right when we get back to update in regards to our trip. Hopefully the 6 days didn't with the cast off didn't do any damage. It's been sooooooo nice having it off. I'm going to feel guilty tomorrow morning when the time comes to give Cole to the docs. Guest guest
Okay, I just looked at the video on the site and I don't think they used Gortex because the Gortex looks more padded. The liner is an extra expense that is not covered by insurance, but the convenience in cast care & comfort to the child is often worth it."Now, there it says it's an extra cost so I can understand if Shriner's can't absorb it, I'd be willing to but it myself though. Some other things I found...- gortex liner allows the child and the cast to be washed;- gortex soft wrap is preferable to cotton wrap (gortex can be cleaned if it gets soiled, & the level of comfort to child is higher); This is a comment I found from an ADULT on a forum site...This is a comment I found from an adult in a forum when doing a search on Gortex -"When you DO get in a cast, INSIST on a GORTEX liner. That way you CAN get it wet, I.E. Showers and/or swim at the lake of your choice. I've had casts without the Gortex & they sucked compared to when I broke my ankle back in '95... GORTEX is the way to go, BY FAR more comfortable too." He's totally talking it up there, funny, but kind of also explains better why I like it so much. Also, , in reference to your concern w/it getting moldy, etc.. Here is an actual site on the Gortex material, it explains how mold/moisture is not something you have to worry about when using the material... if it were then I don't think Dr.'s would be using it.http://www.castliner.com/Take care,~Joy> > Well, we arrived at Shriner's arround 4pm, and took Cole's cast > off.> > When we took it off, he had some pretty bad skin irritation around > his> > waist and hips, so it was decided to let his skin heel, and come > back> > in 6 days to get the waterproof cast put on at that time. Guest guest
Is it rather smooth & kind of plastic type feeling like you can wipe it down easily? And when you feel it to touch is it a padded/cusion feeling? If so than that's cool/great! I wouldn't care about the brand, just the aspects I like about it, the comfortable cusionyness (like my made up word =P) & water resistance. So yey! I can't wait!! And I'm so stoked for you & Ian, I bet it's so great to see him so mobile & being able to do things more normally!! I can't wait for that either, just for her to go down a slide! (sit for that matter Our dinner routine is all messed up now since she's had her cast on we all sit around the coffee table for dinner so she can stand or kneel to eat with us, my toddler never wants to sit @ our actual dinner table now even for lunches b/c she wants to be able to eat with & include baby And she has to stand or kneel in her baths but it works fine, I just use a little water in there & mostly spray her down when I need to rinse her... then let her run around a bit after she gets out to dry out. Good luck w/yours.. enjoy! -joy > > > > Well, we arrived at Shriner's arround 4pm, and took > Cole's > > cast > > > off. > > > > When we took it off, he had some pretty bad skin > irritation > > around > > > his > > > > waist and hips, so it was decided to let his skin heel, > and > > come > > > back > > > > in 6 days to get the waterproof cast put on at that time. > I > > am > > > > excited/happy and also nervous/concerned to have his cast > > off for 6 > > > > days, but the doc said he didn't think it would make that > > much of a > > > > difference in the upcomming correction and success so far. > I > > hope > > > > that's correct.
