Hi Di,

If you're doing countless ab exercises then chances

are you already have a six pack; it's just hidden

under some fat is all.

Alas, it's been proven that you can't spot reduce, so

to get that six pack to emerge you'll need to lose

weight all over, and intense cardio five times a week

for 45-60 minutes at a time is a good start.

Still keep doing your ab exercises though, as it

increases your core strength and also holds everything

in quite nicely!

Incidentally, I have a lot of muscle that is hidden

under fat so I completely empathize with your

struggle!

And, as others have already done - welcome to the

group! I am the list owner and moderator but have

doing my workouts at the gym lately instead of at

home. It would be great if you could post some photos

of yourself in a photo album so we could match a face

with a name! You don't need to look perfect either -

we are all in various stages of our fitness journeys

and are not in competition with one another but rather

are here to support each other in our goals.

I have l have aready lost 40 lbs, which was my goal, and I did have

some reduction in my belly, but the belly fat is still there. I'm

always worried that someone is going to ask me if I am pregnant. When I

was heavier, I would get that question all the time. Since I've lost

weight I haven't but am still fearful that someone will ask. I will

keep trying but I'm thinking surgery is probably the only way to get a

flat stomch, I don't know if I want to go that drastic.

Di,

All of the ab exercises in the world won't give you flat abs that you can see until you burn the body fat covering them. You can't spot reduce on any body part. All that ab work, however, is giving you a great, strong, sexy, six-pack. Keep up your cardio and you will eventually see it.

Hi Tonya,

I thought a 40lb weight loss would give me the edge for flat abs. While

my stomach has reduced. It is still protruding. I have recently tried

using the ball to exercise my abs & that seems to be making a

difference.

Yeah, 40 pounds is a great start, but depending on the person, maybe not enough. Especially if you lost muscle more then fat at first. I'd expect the added muscle that you've noticed recently to start burning off more of that body fat so that you'll start seeing the abs. Remember, the last place we seem to lose body fat is in the stomach and hips. Typically, you have to be in the athletic catagory of body fat in order to see your abs. Personally, I'm at about 18% body fat and still don't see mine because that is the place where I seem to carry it all. My stomach is still flat looking but I can't see my muscle there even though I can do more ab work then anyone I know. (I measure crunches in the thousands when I do them.) Just keep it up and you will eventually lose the bulge, but may or may not see the muscle underneath because of your specific body type. That's why I try to teach all my clients to take care of their bodies, but make a special effort to be happy in their body, not go for the ideal body on magazine covers, etc.

Hi Tonya,

Right now I'm a size 6 & 8. I'm not sure if I feel the need to be a size

4. I would just like some belly fat gone. I am so afraid that someone is

going to ask me if I am pregnant. When I was heavier I got that question

all the time. I wear the tummy control underwear, when I am going

somewhere special. They are not that comfortable so I don't like to wear

them everyday. You are right though, I may have to accept belly fat as a

battle scar from my 2 c-sections. But I am going to keep trying the ab

exercises, and trying to lose inches with cardio & weights. I don't need

to see muscle, just don't want to see fat.

No, you don't have to accept belly fat as a battle scar! You will lose it, but it is typically the last to go. Most women lose in their arms and bust first, then in the calves, and then it slowly works its way from the top and bottom to the middle. So abdominal fat is always the last to go. It sucks, but that is typcially the way I see people lose fat. In order to do that, it takes total body cardio exercise. Just keep up with what you are doing and you will eventually get there. Another thing about the abs, you can also focus on engaging the core all the time and then no longer need the support undies because you are then supporting the stomach with your muscle instead.

Hi Di!

I'm Stacey--welcome to the group! I too am a size 6 but and have the

abdominals as my " problem " area. After having 3 children--I have

stretched out skin that will never be taut again! But I, too, will

work on strengthening my abs and doing my cardio and strength

exercises. Keep up the hard work!!

Hi Stacey,

Thanks for the reply. I have the stretched out skin, & the protuding

belly. It has gotten better, but I will never be able to bare my

middriff. Let me know if you hear of anything new.

Hi Tonya,

Thanks so much for the info about abdominal fat being the last to go. I

feel so much better! Now, I know I am not continually working out in

vain. I have lost my bust, my arms, and calves, just like you said.

Actually today, I thought I noticed a slight difference in my abs, for

the 1st time. I am so excited. Also I will try to engage my core. I

assume that means hold in my stomach, that would be so much better than

wearing the tight undies.
